Had the pleasure yesterday of coming in from the States and stopping by the shop, purchasing The Dane pedal (thanks Alex and Pete!), and meeting the crew. Top notch operation all around gentlemen, with guitar and pedal selections to die for - unlike anything back home. Continued success in all you do!
When I started buying strings in '79-'80 the 8s were standard, 7 were considered light and 9 medium heavy and 10 heavy In the mid to late '80s guys were doing metal stuff drop D and D standard, even Eflat and also wanted "massive" tone so heavier strings became more "standard"
9's on a strat or tele can sound a bit quacky and weak on the 3 skinny strings. I'd really like reverse hybrids, ie 10 to 42 sets with the skinny 3 strings from a set of 9's
I was always a 10s guy on all my guitars and have remained so with my Gibson, however on my Strat I have recently begun using a 9.5-46 set made by Stringjoy and I really think it's a great set for that guitar.
I started on 12s. There's nothing wrong with 9s Pete. That said every guitar should be fitted with 9.5s as that's easily the most satisfying gauge to play in standard tuning on any common scale length.
I'm not able to feel .9's barr chording and I pull it off the side of the fret board. .10's are iffy so I opt for .11's. .11-.46 or .50 Tone and feel. I love it when Pete gets a little bitchy about gear. His playing gets aggressive trying to break that .09. hahahaha
I've got a 2013 Fender Select strat. Flame maple top, SSH, compound radius rosewood fretboard, inlaid into a maple neck, rounded edges, heel carve, locking tuners, big 70's style headstock. I bought in new, off the rack at the GC in Manhattan in 2013. Out the door for $1950 us. It's my #1 now. I also felt that the .09 was a little thin sounding on the Strat so I use 9's but I swap the 9 for a .10. On the E. Fattens up the sound a lot, especially on double stops.
Hate to say it but the tinny sound is on the pickups. I own a strat Elite with ebony board. After replacing the pickups for vmods it sounds fantastic. With a no load tone for the bridge to make it extra crisp. position 2 really chimes on these ebony boards strats.
5:12 wholly agree about 9's Pete. I learned on 9's and it was years before I tried 10s for the first time and realised what I was missing, personally at least for me. Maybe it you're Ingwe you can make it work for you, but I don't have his chops 😅
I’m generally a Tele guy and, in this instance, I still am…..full on into that Telecaster. Just gorgeous. The colors remind me of my one and only Les Paul Classic, which Is in “Smokehouse Burst.” The best looking LP available, IMO. Super cool.
They are some wonderful guitars. Absolute top of the range with S1 switching, locking tuners, Heel contour and Compound radius. and wow the grain in the ebony is so unusual! I absolutely love it
I play 9~46 hybrids on my PRS's and Gibson, and 9~42 on Music Man and other 25.5" guitars. These do look awesome, but I can't figure out why they changed the neck carve ?? The standard "C" shape was fine.
Been playing 42 years, always played 9's on a Fender scale length gtr, did swap for a year on a telecaster, felt the difference when I was bending, but neve heard the diference, so went back to 9's... I do play 10's on shorter scale lengths
In regards to strings- I’ve always used standard 10’s until my Fender Player Plus Telecaster came stock with 9-46 set. Those strings changed my mind for that guitar and I always use it on that guitar. I could never get used to 9-42, but the 46 works somehow. Small thing, but it’s a difference.
9s all day long on my Tele. I do feel there is a slight sound change, but it way easier to play. I find the slight tone change nice actually. Sounds kinda raw.
11-50 flatwound on all my standard tuned electrics. I find 9s off putting on most guitars I’d pickup in shops.. having said that everyone has their own personal preferences and anyone that’s been around a while probably has the sense to get any new guitar set up to their personal preference as soon as they get it home anyway.
I just got your Andertons FSR Charcoal frost Player Plus strat on sale last weekend from fender. I love it. The pickups, the color, the roasted neck are perfect.
13 to 56 for me. I'm a heavy handed m'fer but no wound g though! I like to keep some skin on my flesh 😂 it really suits me well, it's not hard to play at all. But I am pretty damn good at setting up guitars for optimum playability 😊
I wish the tele had binding on it like other Ultras. Not sure why they would remove it for a special edition. Makes it look more like an Am. Pro. special edition
Totally feel that, 9s are super hard to play because i over play them. Limits your dynamic range. Im at 10,5 now might think about moving up to 11s in E standard
I have an Ultra strat (a previous FSR in Purple) and it's a brilliant guitar. I'd never gelled with noiseless pickups before but thess sound fanastic and I definitely appreciate the more modern appointments.
No Pete the Rick Beato video said thinner strings DO sound different! It all started with someone (a guitar manufacturer i believe) saying that thinner strings will tighten the bass response (like a tubescreamer).
I love 8s on my Gibson SG. i do want to get a Heritage Jazz box to put flatwounds on. love flats on bass and have never plated guitar with a set. would be a great second guitar.
The guitars look fantastic - the new pickups are their best noiseless yet. One day they will match the DiMarzio Air! I am pretty sure I could live with these to be honest.
I think it's probably the Noiseless pickups that are thin, and not the 9-gauge strings. I have an Elite, and the guitar was transformed when I replaced the pickups. Great guitars with a nice, modern feel, but the pickups are blah.
I use 10’s on everything (strats, tele, les Paul’s) I got annoyed buying 9’s and 10’s and customs sooo I got lazy and now everything just gets 10’s you soon get used to it… 😅
I would agree with Pete that 9s through single coils sound a bit thin to me. But I put them through humbuckers and they sound just fine. I currently have 5 x 25.5 scale length guitars strung from 8.5s up to 11s and i have a set of 12s waiting to try. 10-54 on my gibson les paul at the moment. There's no right or wrong just differences!
Pete is right. 9s are too weak for cleans. Higher gauges make a big difference to sound and style (I'm not gonna be bending 16s...) 10s are the best all-round gauge, though I like flatwound 11s or 13s with a Bigsby.
I will comment it before I will watch and the I will do the same after. I love watching you testing, playing, having fun together. It’s like watching another episode of Friends, them siting on the couch in the cafe. You are feeling not like a viewer but like a participant, member, one of the „team”
After that many videos you are like family members who should be siting on the opposite side of the table at Easter breakfast. Uncle Lee and cusine Pete… Come to Warsaw one day for a beer and some chat and dirty jokes.
Great video as usual! I love the looks of these guitars, but I don’t know why I have a hard time accepting Stratocaster and telecaster with modern features… About strings: I tend to play what comes stock with the guitar, in terms of gauge. I have 9s on both my Strat and a Tele. I have 10s on my Jason Isbell Tele. And I must say: 10s are a little harder, but they’re more rewarding and the sound seems thicker.
I typically use 10s but it really depends on the guitar. My PRS feels good with 9s and one SG has 11s because the huge stainless steel frets I assume makes it so easy to fret and bend!
I've gone from 9s to 11s, and now I'm back with 9s. 11s were just too hard to bend. Also from EB Super Slinkies to D'Addario, which I think last a bit longer (maybe that's just in my mind though). As a Telecaster afficionado, especially those with belly cuts, I clicked on this video with interest. Well, I have to say, having studied the guitars, this finish and colour doesn't appeal to me. I thought it would, but I just feel that it doesn't really enhance the Telecaster experience. Just my take on it!
I just purchased some Ernie Ball 9.5 strings because I couldn't decide and there was so much conflicting information on the internet between 9's and 10's. I'm a novice and I thought it might be a win-win between 9's and 10's but I wouldn't know much difference from the few months I've been playing.
I use 11-48 power slinky on Strats and tele. 9’s feel too light for me personally as well. I think I’m going to need to buy one of those teles. Gorgeous tiger flame finish. The black headstock completes the look as well. Great review boys. Now go treat yourselves to a Guinness. You earned it. 👏💯👍
Beautiful instruments man. I play DR tite fit 10-46 on my tele. The feel, tone and string life are unmatched IMO. Would love to see you guys do a hex core vs round core string video with different guitars. Cheers fellas!
Both guys played incredibly here. Some of the best licks I've heard from Lee, and Pete was venturing all over the place. These videos always have great playing, but damn.
I put 10s on my Fenders and 9s on my humbucker high gain style guitars. 9s are just a bit easier for lead and shred stuff. My favorite setup is a strat in Eb with 10s.
Les Paul always searched for the cleanest tone possible. From there he could change the signal to whatever sound he wanted. I understand what Pete is saying but that's why we have pedals!
9s on my telecaster deluxe with string through, but 10s on my Jazzmaster going over the jm bridge for increased tension. And just to show my contrary nature: I'm not a big fan of flame maple. And I prefer the feel of the American Professional II line over the ultras. I think it might be the radius, but it's also that they cost less and I like that.
Beautiful guitars! I've been playing 9s since I started 30+ years ago, just what I'm used to.
Those guitars are absolutely gorgeous!
They really are. I don't think I have ever wanted a guitar more than I want that SSS Strat.
Now, those are just gorgeous. Love the black headstock and ebony fretboard as well 😍
But always the same old and cold soup. Nothing new under the sun (Fender). Some new paint, some new finishes, that' s all.
@@mca1960 true but... it's that old and cold soup that guitar player like for the past 70 years. anything new doesn't really sell
@@mca1960 They make what sells. They try "something new" and it almost always tanks. So what's the point of "new" if nobody besides you wants it?
9 - 42 on all my Fender strat scale guitars!
good choice.....cheers.
That’s what I’ve been using for many decades…
And 10-46 on all my Strat style guitars when tuned to E flat...
First thing comes to mind hey, you are two plonkers! but---- we love the channel!!😂
9's ring beautifully on a strat...I have them in all my strats too.
Watching that Liz Hurley joke arrive in Lee's mind in real time was excellent
I always play 8-38mm. Just like Jeff Beck and Billy Gibbons and some more.
These fender guitars look awesome!
When I started buying strings in '79-'80 the 8s were standard, 7 were considered light and 9 medium heavy and 10 heavy
In the mid to late '80s guys were doing metal stuff drop D and D standard, even Eflat and also wanted "massive" tone so heavier strings became more "standard"
Billy plays .07s
Jeff Beck is my hero!
i might try thes 8s sometime.....why kill yourself with these fence wires.....
9-46 on all my Fenders. Even have a Silver Sky and Paul's guitar with 9-46. Everything else, prs, gibsons are 10
my Gibsons always have 9 - 42......always....
40 percenter here. Those Fenders look ultra for sure. Cheers!
Reminds me so much of the strats Steve Lukather used in the 80's
That’s the nicest tele I have ever seen, but now out of my price range
9-42 for me. As BB King told young Billy Gibbons when he was playing heavy strings “why are you working so hard?”.
BB was right there...and so is the Reverent......bye the way i only play 9 - 42 as well.....nowt wrong with that.
9-42, is the way. Played 10's for decades, never again.
9-46 the best of both worlds
Wait till you try 9.5s ..i use 9.5 on my strat and 10s for my tele.
11’s guy here. Love me some slide.
9's on a strat or tele can sound a bit quacky and weak on the 3 skinny strings.
I'd really like reverse hybrids, ie 10 to 42 sets with the skinny 3 strings from a set of 9's
I play 10-48
It’s what I do. Been doing it for decades as well. I’ll change it up but always go back. Curt Mangan strings are the best!
I was always a 10s guy on all my guitars and have remained so with my Gibson, however on my Strat I have recently begun using a 9.5-46 set made by Stringjoy and I really think it's a great set for that guitar.

I'm in love with that Fender strat ❤
Those are some gorgeous Fenders, especially the Strat.
One of the most enjoyable strats I've ever played
I like 11's tuned down a whole step. Hard to break! They make the guitar vibrate too... feels cool.
I'm not able to feel .9's barr chording and I pull it off the side of the fret board. .10's are iffy so I opt for .11's. .11-.46 or .50
Tone and feel.
I love it when Pete gets a little bitchy about gear. His playing gets aggressive trying to break that .09. hahahaha
I’ve gotta say, Lee looks particularly good with that Strat. First 10 seconds.
Informative.Thank you.
Crazy good sound. Props to all captain's solos. The use of backing trac was really great to hear and inspire
Gauge matters with the guitar scales i beleive. My Strats are good with 9-42 and lps are great with 10-46 imho
OMG I have no words 😮😮😮😮😮😮and for the record I play a Fender Strat( bought from Andertons) I love 9's & I also have 9's on my Telecaster too

Elixir? You mean GHS Boomers! That's what they are, only wrapped.
@@grimora-dg3vq didn't know, I just like them. I gotta check this out. Thank you

They look sweet. I've got a Select Telecaster with a flame top in violin burst, it looks stunning.
10-46 on everything!!! Strat, Tele, 335. Godin XTSA, Martin acoustics, Ovation acoustic (D’Addario NB acoustic )
The captain is right. Blowing out without watching the video is always more fun.

I use hybrid 9-46 on all my guitars. Slightly thicker on the top strings, but I love the sound of 9 gauge. Never had an issue with them.
Bought mine 2 weeks ago in Denmark :) a Strat HSS absolute stunning :) best buy ever so versatile :)
Still not stainless frets?
I dig the wodd grain streek on the finger board of the tripple single coil strat the tops are awesome on all three.
Ernie balls 9s are the bomb
Very nice. Suggest a short video on the the Tiger Eye bass. Thx.
They are some of the most beautiful Fenders I've ever seen - pure class! 😎
Good to see the big boys catching up to the likes of Schecter, Sire etc.
that Tele is wow
I would love a transparent scratch plate on a guitar with such a gorgeous finish
I just put 10s on my guitar yesterday and it feels and sounds so much better now... I am just learning but I really like the 10's better.
