For years I’ve been using an emulsion made of shellac, BLO, and Johnson’s paste wax. It does not contain any denatured alcohol. (I’m not convinced the DNA in this formula actually contributes much.) just today I ran some comparisons of the two finishes; the one with the wax seems to burnish up glossier. Either finish requires fine sanding and sealing to prep the surface. My routine is several cycles of sanding sealer/fine sanding or steel wool, followed by several coats of finish, with steel wool in between. Buffing after the finish is dry a while looks nice, too.
First, I am so sorry you live there. 😂🤣😂my mom and sis live there too. Okay. All joking aside isopropyl alcohol might work. I think I will test it out.
Replace the Denatured Alcohol With moonshine and call it OB MoonShine Juice. then you'd have polish with a kick, a tasty drink for when you really wanna get "shellacked"! Hahahaha!
wakely wanderer I’ve turned speeds of 500-600 rpm and gotten a good shine. I then leave it to dry for 30 mins to an hour. A buffing wheel might work as I’ve seen people use them to get a high shine. Sorry I couldn’t be more helpful. Ken
Although what I'm about to say is controversial, I'm gonna say it anyway. All finishes are food safe once cured. OB Shine Juice is not food safe. It is made with shellac, but give it long enough to cure and I think it will be ok. For immediate food safe I would use a walnut oil of a mineral oil bees wax mix. Ken
Be careful with olive oil it can go rancid. Interesting fact, with OB shine juice the ingredient shellac is actually edible. They use it in candies and other food. Ken
Thank you for your wonderful recipe. Your pie of art is outstanding. Great work!
Thanks so much 😊
This is the same formula I learned in shop class in the 1950's. Thanks for the reminder.
Any time John. Thanks for commenting.
Ken
Got this recipe from captain eddy’s channel when I first started turning! Love the finish!
Isn't it fantastic tho? Thanks for commenting.
Ken
Moonpie Creations absolutely amazing!
I've substituted the shellac with wipe on poly with great results
I have thought of trying that. Thanks for the info.
Now I know how to make it. Many thanks for that...In Aussie, we call denatured alcohol Methylated Spirits.
Hey thanks for watching David. I have had a lot of subscribers ask how to make it. SO simple, but those result......
Ken
Oh! I need to make this stuff! Thanks, for sharing Ken. Claire x
You should! Very easy
Thanks I'll try some , easy enough to make.
So sorry I missed this comment Gary.
Ken

That's cool already have all the ingredients.
That's what's great about it. A lot of people already have the ingredients. Thanks for watching.

Ken
This is a good reference! Thanks, Ken!
Thanks Robert.
Ken

Ken
Great cocktail, LOL! Thanks for sharing
Sorry Chris, never noticed I missed this comment and others.
Ken
Awesome informational educational video experience Y'alls
Thank you.
Ken
How long do you let it dry between coats and do you sand it any between coats?
I let it sit around 30 mins. I don't sand between coats.
Thank you Sir!!😊
You are welcome. Thank you for watching.
Ken
Thanks for the recipe Ken. You should take back that can of linseed oil, maybe you could get a replacement.
Hahahahaha, I've had that thing for a least a year. This Ob Shine Juice goes a long way.
Ken
This was great!
Thank you.
Ken
Thanks for the recipe!
Can you use regular linseed oil ?
Maxime G. No do not use raw linseed oil. You can change the shellac though. I would like to pass the credit for this recipe to Capn' Eddie.
@@MoonpieCreations and how much time you wait between coats? Did you need to sand between coats?
Thanks for sharing
You bet!

Stephen Richie it helps in quick drying.

Hello Ken, mind if I use your Disclaimer?
Gary
Feel free Gary.
Ken
Thanks much.
Denatured alcohol is no longer sold in California. Any suggestions for a denatured alcohol substitute
First, I am so sorry you live there. 😂🤣😂my mom and sis live there too. Okay. All joking aside isopropyl alcohol might work. I think I will test it out.
@@MoonpieCreations thanks,
I have some 99.5% isopropyl alcohol. I'll give it a try
@@michaelprusak6188 I’m going to give it a try too.

hahahhahahaha Shellacked gold right there.
Ken
CAN YOU USE ANY SHELLAC SANDING SEALER
I have never tried that, but I don't think it would work.
I see Bulls Eye sells both water based and oil based shellac. Which one should I use? Thanks
I use Zinsser Bulls Eye Clear Alcohol-Based Shellac.
For a warped or off center piece that can’t be turned fast enough to create friction, would a buffing pad work to get the shine?

Nice one
Thank you Sir.
Ken
I like to mix mine with a little seltzer water and pour it over ice. No wait, that's how I like my mint juleps...
Did you not see my warning on FB? Do not drink this. lol
Ken
is the shine juice food safe? ( im new to turning )

Ok ! awesome thank you. I have been using Olive oil, but bought some boiled Lynn Seed oil. ima make me some shine juice for sure!
Be careful with olive oil it can go rancid. Interesting fact, with OB shine juice the ingredient shellac is actually edible. They use it in candies and other food.
Ken
How does this work on pens?
Not as good as a CA finish. Although I do use it on Christmas ornaments. Sorry it took so long to answer, I only recently saw the comment.
Ken
would this work for automotive?
I do not think so. It has to have high heat caused by friction to set up
Isn't this what's known as Danish Oil?
Danish oil is normally made from tung oil or polymerized linseed oil, although there is no defined formulation. This is a speed friction polish.
Thats my size shot glass
So I never saw a lot on comments on this video. Now they are showing up. lol Sorry about that.,
Ken
so not squeezing a bunch of OB shine fruits, got it :-)
lol, that made me chuckle. Thanks.
Ken
OB shine juice looks nice at first but the finish doesn't last.
Yes it does, but if you put a a coating of wax on top and buff it, it will keep.
