I would always see these trucks driving around near my house as I drove past a large housing project and I always wondered what kind of truck they were. Thanks for this informative video
This Old (Co)rat Slab?
As someone who works in commercial concrete, I always get a kick out of people who don’t do a lot of concrete working with it. Not that they do a bad job it’s just fun to watch. Makes me feel like I might actually know one or even two things.
Rat Slab. Definitely going to work that terminology in somewhere in the future to throw some know-it-all off his game.
Haha yes indeed! I only do patios and extensions and that's a great term to use especially, where I am in Ohio, vermin are a problem.
I learned how to float concrete by doing crawl spaces.i always floated it smooth because the boss wanted it that way. We never did rat slabs.
First saw an on site concrete truck on a rehabilitation video from Canada. Great idea.

Never knew there were onsite mixing trucks. Always dealt with premixed.
Not very commonplace

pour 10,000 cubic yards in 7 days 24 hrs with two onsite mixing trucks. Building eight stacked Silos. We used one truck mixing and other in service. Nonstop.
Neither did I. There's always something to learn from Tommy and the rest of the crew at This Old House...
@@brianglade848 a job offer to do it state side and a deep hatred for silo construction. any monetary gains were taken to by the company owner. lol

Ran a Volumetric truck for a couple years.....great business to get into.

Volumetric mixer is the correct term for this truck.
I’ll call a mud seal a rat slab next time and laugh at the reactions

If you had to work in that crawl space 10 years down the road you would have floated it flat.
Rocks in the kneecaps are not fun.
Naeh.. You have not seen the concrete where there is a glass pieces mixed to it so it really is rat protected.... THAT is not fun.... I have seen rats eating through that thing, still amazed that how hard they work as they eat around all those pebbles and they carry them out to neat pile. 3" is nothing, when they can go through a 25" when they are determined.

Rarely do I c concrete being poured without a vapor barrier underneath it.
@@Kevin-mp5ofif u ever had to Jack hammer that slab it’s going to b that much harder to take out without the plastic being there. I disagree with Tommy on this one ur literally going to have that slab crack from the underside up. Every time it rains water will chip away at it over the years
Love this series, but they can’t possible be an expert on everything right. That’s a volumetric mixer. And you don’t poke hole in the vapor barrier specially if your not even going to bother finishing the concrete. It wouldn’t have take any much more time to Float that concrete Not Trowel it smooth to look decent at least.

No Tom its not gravel it's sand stone cement and water because gravel goes on roads not concrete.
Respectfully disagree.
Concrete mix designs can use crushed stone or gravel as the coarse aggregate constituent.
