Thanks for this video Rachel ! The harmonics is a game changer to some mixes , I don't use this tool enough when selecting my song sets ...love your presentations and how easily you explain them for us layman's, lol . Be well !
Huge, huge mark of a professional DJ mixing by harmonics and not bpm. Sure, you can do bpm but harmonics is a principal of music theory that everyone at the end of the night can either say "yeah that DJ was on fire she was killing it" or "that dj was alright". It's a phenomenon people with no musical training at all can "feel" even if they can't understand it. Big shift in how I mixed, irrefragably. *BPM mixing is much harder than harmonic mixing btw* if we're picking sides amongst other wedding DJ's.
A very good and simple explanation on this feature, I do dabble with it, but not get too anal over it. You hit the nail on the head, play to the floor and audience, especially most of us being mobile jocks playing out with different genres, BPMs and decades. Another tool in the box, well done Rachel, great work.
Thank you so much for checking this out. I couldn't agree more. It is a great tool for the toolbox. Use it when it makes sense, but it's not something to solely rely on to clean up horrible mixes. HAHA! DJs still need to their job and play for the crowd and the vibe they are trying to create. I use it when needed and it really allows me to be more creative.
Great explanation of harmonic mixing nice vid! I"ve just started using harmonic mix as I"ve become more conformable with beat matching...those two things combined have transformed the professional vibe of my sets, highly recommend focusing on harmonic mixing to elevate to a "pro" vibe. Oh also liked the "change it back" to the recorded key once out of leaving track, smart!
This and the STEMS feature have brought my mixing to another level. While I do consider this a more advanced skill, I think it’s important for DJs to be aware of mixing in key. Thanks so much for checking this out. Happy mixing!
DJ Kelly Kel it’s a fantastic way to elevate creativity! VDJ has done a great job making this easy to use for anyone who’s interested. Thanks so much for watching! 🙏🏻💪🏻
chadnliz2k11 I couldn’t agree more! Too much of anything isn’t good. Especially “Dj effects”. I love the term tool you mentioned. That’s exactly what it is. You need to know when to use it and when to dial it back. I use it sparingly and always try and turn it off to get back to the original song. I find that I get caught in this vortex of weird tones if you just let auto key bleed into every track. I don’t like it personally. I appreciate you taking the time to check this out! Have a great night. 🙂
Btw, when djs claim hatred of song or line dances that crowds love I always consider those songs wrenches in a tool box that get the job done lol My artistic snobbery only serves me well in my basement dj cave 😀
@@DJRachelLynch oh and before I shut up, this week I took delivery on my first 10 Ape Lab products. Great timing now that Ohio is on lockdown lol. Cheers
chadnliz2k11 congratulations on the ApeLabs! You’re going to love them. And let’s face it, if we end up on a national quarantine for two weeks at least you have something cool to play with. 🤣🦠 I hope you love them.
Awesome video once again. I noticed in all three examples you bumped your BPM a bit on both tracks from 124 to 126. Is this the BPM/tempo you usually like to work at or was it just for these example? I have noticed some djs consistently keep all tracks just above their natural tempo for energy. Just wondered if this is something you do also and if so why? Keep up the awesome work. Always look forward to your stuff.
Dustin Serrette so it completely depends on the songs and what I’m trying to accomplish BPM wise. How I usually make gradual pitch shifts (let’s say from 105 BPM to 120 BPM) is to take a track a track that’s 105 and bump it to like 108. Then I’ll take a song that’s 115 and match it to 108 and then as the transition is happening I’ll let the pitch slider out to get back to 115. Then the next song that’s 120 I’ll bring down to 115 BPM and slowly let it out to 120BPM etc. etc Sometimes I split the difference like you see here and then reset the tempo. I tried to not make a lot of adjustments in this video so that nobody got confused that’s why I left it unadjusted. If that makes sense. Otherwise I would have moved the tempo to its original one.
@@DJRachelLynch makes perfect sense. I use both serato and virtual depending on the setting or size of set I'm working on. I saw your other reply on this but just wanted to be sure- you are finding a "netral" BPM for both songs and doing harmonic mixing and as you get into song B you are bringing the BPM to "normal at some point early in the song. Probably works better bringing a BPM up versus slowing it down? Sorry DJ newbie here
RT Yes. You got it. I find a BPM that’s reasonable for both tracks. Example a 108 BPM mixed with a 119 BPM track, I’d level them out to 112 BPM and then gradually raise the track back to 119BPM. The ear wouldn’t pick up on that subtle of a difference in BPM.
