  • The 1989 Cosgrove Hall film, based on Roald Dahl's book.
One dark night, an orphan named Sophie is snatched from her bed by a giant, and whisked away to another world. Fortunately, her abductor is the Big Friendly Giant (BFG for short), a likeable guy who spends his time giving good dreams to children. He's also the only one of his species who doesn't eat humans, but as the smallest and weakest, he's powerless to stop his brutal neighbors. As long as Fleshlumpeater, Bloodbottler, and all the rest are free, Sophie will never be safe, so she and the BFG concoct a plan to stop the evil giants and save humanity - once and for all!
This movie was a staple of my childhood, and in my opinion, it's one of the best adaptations of Dahl's work. Enjoy!

I like how this film captured what the book was like, basically like a lot of Dahl's films it was quite dark but never quite going that extra mile into horror nor does it lose the fact that it is at the end of the day, a childrens story.
Apparantly Dahl actually liked this film when Cosgrove showed it to him which i think is pretty good. It's not often authors are happy with films made of their work and Dahl was one of the pickiest.

3:50 I love how Sophie goes “Ah yes. A giant cloaked figure looming over the houses and peering into windows. All’s good. Aight. Imma just go back to- WOAH WAIT A MINUTE WHAT THE FUCK??”
This movie unironically formed some of my sense of humour today.

Nothing wrong with writing stories like that. Kids love dark stories. It's only the adults who censor stories. Ask any kid and it's the stories that made them shiver that they will remember years from now.

Sir Mark Rylance was believable as The BFG because he had the persona and the voice. Having Steven Spielberg directing and John Williams composing the music The BFG is perfectly matched.

I am just grateful that Steven Spielberg directed The BFG because he has had the ability to connect with children in a big way on the big screen, and if Tim Burton directed it the film would have been far too gory, bloody and extreme to be viewed by children in the cinema because of Tim Burton's reputation for dark comedy, unpredictable black humour, Gothic horror, the grotesque gruesome and grisly, the creepy shadows, the ugly and the sinister, and blood and gore from his previous films like Sleepy Hollow and Sweeney Todd.

Watched this when I was 8, the animation is stunning to this day. It's a shame it's all been replaced by Flash animation.

Yeah, and the Butcher-Boy" "The Butcher-Boy??!!.......P-please don't eat me!!!" "Me? You thinks because I is a Giant that I is a man-gobbling Cannyable?" - Chuckles - "Me? Gobbling up Human Beans?, do you mind? This I never." From The BFG by Steven Spielberg starring Sir Mark Rylance and Ruby Barnhill.

Roald Dahl liked scaring kids with his stories - he always said that kids are alot smarter than people give them credit for and know the things in his stories exist in the real world, so what is the point in hiding it from them.
What actually creeps me out is that my favorite story of his (The BFG) involves kidnapping, cannibalism, murder and binge drinking (the solider @ the end of the book) lol !

FL3NK FREERADICAL LAMPSHADE Same here :( I’m sure there is a way to extract the music from a certain scene and create a sound file, I’m still asking around how to do it and trying to learn :-)

    In My Opinion:
*If A Film Can Do The Book Material Justice It’s A Good Movie*
    *This Movie Did Just That*
