I saw this film, decades ago; when I was just graduating from young catholic school. 25 years ago(Give or Take), we watched this film as a class video. It reminded us that despite the world’s twisted ways, one can find solace; if one puts in enough.
What a heartwarming story. The scene where the boy shares the donkey's burden and plays with him is truly touching. When he consoles the donkey, sying, Don't worry, I will not sell you to a careless person, his resembles that of mother's. Truely lovely cartoons. It's a beautifully crafted cartoon that captures such genuine effection.
Crying like a baby here… in the Bible theres a passage that says pregnant Maria was carried by a small old donkey to the place where Jesus was given birth. it’s not Joseph's kindness nor the sad parts, but what makes me so emotional (in a good way), is the fact that I can’t imagine a more humble origin, the simplest of creatures, who worked so hard in the whole life for so little, to be and to have such an important role in the birth of the most evolved soul the Earth has ever seen… but we watching, think that the donkey is just a useless old animal, until we see Joseph and gather all the pieces together. Such a lesson…
I remember watching this one when l was little girl. I love this story, but l always cry😢it is sad reality how we treat animals, as long as they work or give us what we need we keep them but when they are old we sell them or kill😢and we forget everything good that they did to us. This little movie reminds me that love and friendship are priceless. It's my all-time feel good little movie for whenever I'm feeling a bit low - a hidden gem to be viewed by young and old, at any time of the year - enjoy and be at peace ❤🙏🏽
OMG i had completely forgotten about this . this was something i used to rent out from the video store several times back when i was a kid back in the late 70s i was about 4 years old . just seeing the thumbnail , i started remembering the song small one for sale , and who the boy sold the donkey to .Wow , this is for me great memories . i'm gonna find the time later to watch this . this has put a smile on my face .Great post @DDF:Film Magazine it's made my day. 👍😃
One of the Christmas classics of my childhood that to this day still makes me cry from start to finish...animals we love don't see "old" or "ugly"...they recognize the love within and see only that. Movies like this remind me how precious it is that God made animals and then made us to look after them, name them...etc...city of heaven just seems that much more appealing wondering if all the animals I've loved and lost are up there and we'll play all day up there. Ugh...can't stop crying. So many small ones out there...
😅 I'm here watching in 2024 like I was as little girl back in the 90s 😊 so much memories 😢 also remind me of my wonderful dad I miss him so much,we sometimes watching cartoons together ❣️ rip daddy
The last time I watched this I was young, life didn't really make sense but i had my whole family here with me, I watched it again today and it made me think so much of the family I lost, I'm crying like crazy over it all but if you see this, God bless you all and merry christmas ❤ 23/11/24
What a beautiful story and such an amazing stunning ending The man who bought the donkey is Joseph and the donkey is carrying Mary his wife who is with child( Saviour Jesus) and they are going to Bethlehem
NEVER EXPECTEDED END 😭💔People see all the faults in us, loving man can't be with us forever, we have to endure the hard work given before we go to the right destination, God who created us knows how much spiritual strength we have. 🥺✨💫
I haven't seen this in years. It never fails to move me to tears when the boy has to sell his beloved pet. Been there! Still a great story. The film came out in 1978. (I was 11!) The voice of Joseph was done by Gordon Jump; the "big guy" on _WKRP in Cincinnati!_
It was also re-released in 1981 as a triple feature with “CINDERELLA” and “THE FOX AND THE HOUND”. My oldest son saw it during the re-release with my late mother. It needs a lot more airtime on tv during the holiday season as well as screen time in theatres, especially on the screens of the small town walk-ins with just one screen only.
Let’s try petitioning Turner Classic Movies to show this great masterpiece every holiday season among its Extras lineup provided that they show it in between 1961’s “KING OF KINGS” and 1959’s “BEN-HUR”.
Aww, my eyes were wet at the end of the money, I love it. I know may small and worth nothing to humans but I am important to God Almighty 😊 and my usefulness will come very soon 😊
Lunatics on the board of directors and stockholders that just don’t care if any of the pictures are successful enough at the box-office. No wonder the company has gone downhill.
@LindaCooper-i3f completely agree, from what I've heard this was created from DonBluths animation team to show Disney what they can do. You can really tell it's from don bluth with its very down to earth animation and genuine heartfelt connection the boy and small one have. Lol I was literally was bawling at the beginning and end of this film 😭🤣🥰😭🤣🥰😭🤣🥰😭🤣🥰
My oldest son is planning on restoring an old abandoned movie theatre he calls the Rebel in Flemingsburg, Kentucky, even though the original name of theatre in question was the Princess. Ofcourse, he plans to keep on using the projectors 📽, and above all else, he’s planning on ALL bargain basement prices for concessions and tickets alike. Now, while the concession prices will vary, the ticket prices on the other hand will depend on the age of the customer in question. The following age groups will determine how much each customer pays for their tickets: $.75 cents for regular adult admission, $.50 cents for high school students, $.25 cents for college students, $.10 cents for senior citizens, and $.05 cents for kids ages 12 and under.
Turner Classic Movies needs to show this every December 25TH 🎄 alongside of 1959’s “BEN-HUR” , 1961’s “KING OF KINGS”, and 1965’s “THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD”.
@tailsprower1253 i love the Black Cauldron. I'm still waiting for the original version to be released, the one with all the cut scenes colored and added
It should be re-released theatrically for the holiday season every five years, even if Sean Marshall is the only cast member still alive and collecting royalties from it. Otherwise, keep it in your DVD collection for the kids and grandkids alike.
This story has a very beautiful ending where Joseph comes and takes her to Mother Mary and after this we all know where the little one will go. Jesus love you.
lol. I would quote this movie all the time, but nobody had any idea what I was talking about. “Clink, clink, clank, clank, give the money to the bank!” 😂

The man who bought the donkey is Joseph and the donkey is carrying Mary his wife who is with child( Saviour Jesus) and they are going to Bethlehem
Yes! As soon as I saw the kind man the name that escaped my lips was Jesus, it was a second later I realised it was Joseph❤
"I need a gentle donkey to carry my wife to Bethlehem"
That was when it clicked
To quote the title of the song by the late singer Roy Orbison “YOU GOT IT”.
Holy Griswold!
Surely the footage of Bethlehem must have provided a detail or two?!

Really is a Don Bluth film. This is the film that drove Bluth away from Disney and made DIsney realize judges and court officials can be bought off.
Actually, it were black cauldron and fox&hound, which drove him away.
