- Dicey Dungeons Part 16 - starting now, the DLC gets good. REALLY good. The Thief's gameplay was fairly similar to the main game's episodes, but these rules are absolutely hype. A completely new way to approach the Jester makes for a great time you won't want to miss!

Whenever the status effects have a question mark next to them, it means they're the status effects from a parallel universe. All the parallel universe episodes are from episode 5 of each character, of which each character gets completely knew equipment and faces enemies with new attacks. The Berlin Key was actually from one of those Parallel Universe Episode 5s, and I'd really be keen if you checked them out once you're done with the DLC expansion!
Yeah Reunion was meant for the people who already beat the main game, so he kinda put the cart before the horse

Shock isn't CHANGED, it's just that you haven't seen any of the 5th episodes for any characters, in which all status effects are changed, the normal shock has you put in a dice to release it, while the parallel universe shock (round 5) is 3 hp to unshock
Well, this isn't a parallel universe episode either. The reason shock was swapped for its pu version was pretty easy to guess, though...

You say "the same", and I know what you mean, but just saying "the same" doesn't do it justice. FOR THOSE NOT IN THE KNOW- Yeah, the description is the same, but all the equipment pools for each character are wildly different.

I like how base game jester is “Too many cards, not enough dice” while Reunion Jester is “Too many dice, not enough cards”

They didn't change shock, that's "Shock?," not "Shock." It's in the latter episodes of the base game.
you say there are no new enemies, but considering every single enemy has a completely different loadout, is that not essentially the same as having tons of new enemies?
Agreed. They look the exact same but they work completely differently.
The only thing that isn't changed are type matchups, so yeah
It's more about feel than facts. The enemies movesets are never particularly important, it's their names and sprites that you see. It makes the game feel samey, despite being different.

The old shock would have been fairly pointless with this version of the Jester, since you are constantly getting new die.
Or it would have been OP, as it destroys your only die

It’s “shock?” It’s a different status effect
Secret Lore: A lot of cards in this episode are references to an old (predating Slay the Spire!) deckbuilder roguelike called Dream Quest. (Slash in that game says 'deal 2 damage, draw a card', there's a card called Jasra's Jarring Jolt that does something different, etc)
Isn't Jasra's Pendant also in this episode? Never heard of the game

Shock was changed for the jester fight because in the current state, when you only have one die, placing your die in the shocked equipment would either;
1. Make it so you get the die back and nothing changes
or
2. It takes away your die and is a hard counter to the dlc jester always
So instead of making it extremely strong or extremely weak, they just changed it to cost health instead of a die
It's parallel universe shock. But, yes. For those reasons, shock is switched

Anytime a status effect has a question mark [?] after it, that denotes it as a parallel universe effect where it does something different.

That’s a sort of false equivalency. Sure that may be true for why they chose it in foresight, but they didn’t change it to a newly created functions solely for this, when it was already premade in the parallel universe episodes

They changed shock because I think if shock was how it normally worked it would either be useless against you (if you draw a dice when you put it in the shock) or completely lock that equipment from being used. So I guess the middle ground they found was -3 hp.

It occurs that the normal drawback of Shocked equipment eating a die is useless when there's only one die to work with: either it eats the die and doesn't give one back, making the choice to do so a misplay by default, or it eats the die and does give one back, making the drawback toothless.

Would love to see you play Circadian Dice, a dice building rougelike game, which released today.
The episode 5s and 6s are excellent and the source of some of these new mechanics the DLC is using to the fullest; they're excellent. The 4s (besides the warrior's) are also interesting higher stakes hard modes for each character that force you to think more strategically. (Probably tired of hearing people recommend these, but I thought I'd try for a logical explanation of what would make them entertaining.)

@@Kurszt well not really it’s still a 1/6 chance. The chance of 4 6s is the same as something like a 4 a 1 a 2 then a 6. And he’s rolled thousands of dice anyways so most combinations are bound to happen
The reason they used the PU shock is because you have one die and infinite dice, so normal shock is useless

the reason they changed shock is that you aren't limited in the amount of dice, so the normal shock would do nothing
19:00 Wouldn't Picnic basket be awesome if it gives you an extra die the next turn? So you have 2 dies to work with, greatly reducing the chances of not being able to play anything and increasing the chances of being able to play your card draw cards? Or am I misunderstanding how it works?

This actually seems like a fun episode unlike some others. It changes how the game works without being super gimmicky and frustrating.
To be honest, I never had much of a problem with the episodes being "gimmicky", I guess that's mostly what they're supposed to be. But I will say there were some episodes like Finders Keepers thief where the early game was annoying, bc the limit break does nothing and the steal mechanic can get you killed.
I'm super confused. Why does he often put higher numbers in "defend", damaging less as a result. And at times even said stuff like being greedy by not putting a 1 in it and instead put it in the one that can take any die (zlonk)? And at 23:37 he even said putting a 4 in it was very good for him? But I can't see how that is particularly better than any die below that?
One in 1296 should be the chance for you to get four 6 in a row
This is just feeling like a case of Play Vanilla Before Modded, or rather, Play Vanilla Before DLC.

I believe they changed how shock works because you only get one dice. If you spend a dice to unlock a card, you can't do anything anyway since you don't get the dice back.

You actually wouldn't get the dice back, because it's not coded in the game to specifically return a dice whenever you unshock an item. Plus, it would make Shock a *benefit* to you, since you could use it as an additional reroll!

I played that gamemode and got a card that said: Do 2 burn (9 Mana, do 25🔥 damage) I killed the boss first turn 💀 💀
Even if you don't play through all the Main game levels
I recomend beating each dices Episode 6's
They Have lots of new cards atop of the condtions
If you beat all 6 episode 6's you unlock a secrete level witch is alotta fun

Hey Tyler, I think you should give Darkest Dungeon a try. There are elements of the game I see you despising but some parts I think you may love. The game has brutal strategic combat that punishes every mistake. It gets pretty damn grindy when you reach later game content but you may have fun with it for a handful of hours.
Recommendation for another dice builder rogue-like game called circadian dice. Seen some people play it you should check it out. Just been released on steam.

Well if shock was normal when you get your dice back after each use, then there would just straight up be no point in shock
I think terry (the creator of dicey dungeons) should make the status effects pop-ups also appear on eqvipment, if you don't know what a status does - mouse over it! It would make it for new players to get into the game more easily!

I once rolled the same side on a twelve side dice 4 times in a row…it was the miss side…
@@shadowcween7890 that's not true at all. for example three 6s and a 5 is four times as likely because there are four places the 5 can go. even worse, that's not how this kind of extreme event is measured; since this outcome is the best possible one, it is more statistically extreme. therefore, even though four 1s is also 1/1296, this one is more special because all of the outcomes with four of a number 1-5 are equivalent. this result really does have a p value of ~0.077%

Speaking of every dice combination, you are considering that the order doesnt matter, he is considering it does matter.
The prob of each specific dice comb is really the same, but for like the case of 3x6+1x5 you can have the 5 in 4 different spots, wich does match with what you said, independently, 4x6 is really unlikely for a fair die, but what reaaly matters is the satisfaction of seeing all sixes, like @Godlyvex5 said

It pains me that you passed up turbo charge. That's literally one of the best equipments in this episode. Equipment is the most powerful thing here. You get to the 2nd floor, you buy your equipment of choice and you structure your entire build around it. And turbo charge especially is good because jarring jolt when upgraded also does 2 damage so you get a better tactical boop.
I have this game on my switch, and it's difficult. I use a stupid strategy so maybe it's not difficult but I make it difficult for myself.

yknow, this game is best played when you at least try to go in the correct order- lots of stuff seems different to tyler simply because the mechanics used get introduced in later episodes- like the alternate status effects from the parallel universe episodes (episode 5 on every character is a parallel universe, where equipment is different and status effects are different and everything is wild). also skipping the cutscenes is causing me pain, they're one of the best things about this game and so many people skip them (which is why a lot of people also miss the fact the jester canonically uses they/them pronouns! which makes me very happy btw)
Tyler has said that he absolutely detests the writing in this game (and he's "doing us a favour" by skipping the cutscenes). Which is a bit much IMO, but hey, it's his choice
@@jackeea_ I get that- it can be a bit wordy, but I was sold on the game more for the jokes in some bits than over the puzzles- so much of the text in cutscenes makes it so much easier to figure out the rules, at least in the dlc. Again, though, I just like the cutscenes, but playing in order still makes the game a lot easier to figure out...

I had so much trouble with the Jester. The first couple times I didn’t make it to the boss. Then I could get there consistently but I kept getting Audrey which weakened me and she always rolled a minimum of 3 dice at 4 or higher. So I was getting hit for 12 almost every time and getting 2-3 weakened. And the weakened made it so I could only play if I rolled a 1 or 2.
Only other problem was the inventor when sometimes it wouldn’t give me any attacks so I lost out on turns and would eventually die.
I beat the rest of the characters my first time.

It's not a guaranteed option; there's a 50% chance that Jasra's Pendant spawns in the floor 2 shop, 25% chance that Turbo Charge spawns, and a 25% chance that Snapdragon spawns.

My game crashed both times I tried to trade as Jester (2 separate sessions). Weird that it worked sort of properly for you.
Also, I did a turbo charge build and it was hilariously powerful (I did get, like, all the right cards).
