I hope you have found solutions for the drive shaft. PB Blaster is a superb product for your situation. Lighty tap the shaft with a mallet or hammer after lubrication , it works in the pto release button as well. The cover on the gear box should be removed, and the case is likely full of water because the seal in the engagement shaft has leaked. I purchase universal rubber rake teeth in a pkg of 10 for less than $30. The dolly wheel is a great option for making nice tight turns.
My short drive shaft on my 640 John Deere rake won't slide right either. Did you ever figure out how to remove the top u joint? My bottom comes right off but I see no screw or anything holding the top u joint to that shaft coming out of gear box.
If you put teeth on. Get New Holland after market steel teeth.. Rubber mount teeth break off to easy. l've used one for forty years gave up on rubber mounted teeth.
