My mother and her four siblings were born in Whitehaven. Their father was killed in the Haig Pit disaster of January, 1931. I've lived in Canada since the age of four, but still feel ties to the old country. I wish I could have known my grandfather.
lovely old photos,at 5.06 was my great grandmas old sweet shop, lewthwaites, and at 6.23 was where I worked, todds butchers, from 1976 - 1981 ,brings back memories, what has happened to Whitehaven now?what a shame,it ws a hive of activity and a thriving town
Look at the comments here. This kind of negative thinking belongs in the past. Whitehaven is a beautiful place, it always has been. The people commenting here aren't the solution - they're the problem. Stop being so negative.
2:53 The Dusty Miller. Not long demolishes, past couple of year. Not because the building was in disrepair, but to make-way for a hideous row of offices. Whitehaven is slowly being eroded, and has been for the last century. it won't be a Georgian town soon. I'd even argue that enough buildings are gone now to class it as Georgian.
This is so sad... Whitehaven now is actually a ghost town, with nothing going for it tbh.. Such a shame, because it could be such a lovely town, as it has (or had) so much potential...
Actually research the history of Whitehaven before you spout utter nonsense...you're probably part of the problem. Can trace my family back to 1575 in this area ....Whitehaven and the Lake District as a whole.. was born in Whitehaven.. As for Sellafield - like it or hate it - it has put millions of £s into the infrastructure/schooling etc of the area as well as providing work for so many..the council has done barely anything except line their own pockets..
Born Parton.. All my uncles were fishermen. X7.. And I still love going back there now... My dad worked at Haigh and. Grandma on screed...

A lovely look back at a once great town. Please don't knock it now, it's just part of life's progress. It brought back great memories
who else lives here in whitehaven?

Councillors, magistrates, men of renown, who needs to live in a dirty old town. Go on tear it down.

Drugs/alcohol have killed the place. Plus the fact it depended way too much on Sellafield.
