  • A 44-minute film telling the story of Ringo and his poor look-a-like Ognir Rrats, narrated by George Harrison. Songs include: 1. "I Am The Greatest", 2. "Act Naturally", 3. "Yellow Submarine", 4. "You''re Sixteen" (with Carrie Fisher of Star Wars fame), 5. "With a Little Help from my Friends", 6. "Heart On My Sleeve" and 7. "Hard Times". Ognir Rrats is of course Ringo Starr spelled backwards.

    I love Georges conference in the begining w/ his shout out to The Rutles the comment about I think it was their trousers is a rutles reference

    • @Fordham1969
      @Fordham1969 8 років тому +2

      +zim1966 Yep,the trousers were from The Rutles,it was when they were "interviewing" the mother of The Rutles manger Leggy Mountbatten(the equivalent to Brian and Queenie Epstein)and they asked her what her son liked so much about the band.She replied "it was the trousers...they were so...tight...left nothing to the imagination..."
      If you remember,instead of dying the way Brian did,Leggy,after a lonely and despondent night,sadly accepted a teaching post in Australia.

    It's nice that John Ritter was able to be involved in this. He was a big Beatles fan - if you watch the Three's Company series he had a poster of the Beatles hanging in his room for the whole 8 series.

      ''allymayful'' Yet he is considered to be the least important member of The Beatles and his appearance on Saturday Night Live sometime in the earlier 1980s was considered to be one in which the ratings for the show were the lowest ever.
      (At least until Nancy Karrigan made an appearance on SNL).

      @@obscurelyvague He was NEVER considered the least important in their early days of recording and touring. They were a team of equals. It would have been more challenging for Ringo when they stopped touring. He has kept busy with all sorts of interesting projects since they split up.

      Both the Firesign Theatre and the Monty Pythons (with Douglas fucking Adams!) were hired to write specials for Ringo. And yet *this* dross from the creator of the execrable Star Wars: Lifeday was the one that got made!?! Second only to Lennon's murder in unforgivable sins against Beatledom!!!

    I recorded this special when it first aired in 1978 on one of the first VCR's available for sale. The recorder was VERY expensive at the time (I believe it cost me about $1500 and I had to finance it through a bank lol) Eventually this recorder was replaced by much newer and better models. I still have this cassette (and recorder) but it is gigantic and I have no machine to play it on. Thankfully I found this channel and I watched the special for the first time in all these years. Thank you DrRaptus for sharing.

    April 1978, I was 10 years old, and an absolute nut for anything Beatles....and somehow this got by me. I didn't even know it existed until accidentally stumbling upon it here...Amazing, plus it had Vincent Price who was also a big deal to 10 year old me as was Carrie Fisher...Scary movies and Star Wars were all the rage for me then...and still. It even looks like it was made for interests and big likes of 10 year old boys in 1978, which turns out to be the same interests and big likes for a 55 year old man in 2023 ...thanks for sharing

It was terrific seeing old-timers like John Ritter, Vincent Price, Art Carney, Angie Dickinson, and Carrie Fisher in their younger days. I especially liked the "friends" section where Ringo sees Johnny Ray, Roy Orbison, and the other greats of the 50s. Makes me sad to see how time passes...

    this is sweet! back when you could suddenly see Ringo & George on TV. While its not a highly produced affair, kind of seeps into to 70s TV trash quality at times, but becuase its Ringo & George and undoubtably a few other cool people too, it does have a strange flair that makes it fit into the vein of Beatles films, which were never "real" films, but a somehwat odd and peculiar appearance of Beatles--those amazing big musical talents--on the screen. what saves them when it comes to public appearance was humor--sometimes an absurd sense of humor--wit and an a parody of an everyday average man's dealings. Ringo's strength was actually his percieved flaws, his imperfections are what pulled him through, made him the most heartfelt Beatle

    For those wondering, 1:09 is an "inside joke" for George Harrison. "I think it was the trousers" is a line repeated several times in All You Need Is Cash, a Rutles film released that same year, made by ex-Python Eric Idle. George makes a cameo in that film, as he and Eric were good friends.

    At 23:49 when ringo said “ I loved you and king Lear” I’m certain he’s referring to the William Shakespeare tragedy king Lear and that’s also a connection to the Beatles “I am the walrus” where there’s the live radio recording at the end of the song where Philip Guard, John Bryning and Mark Dignam are reading and acting an extract from the tragedy which was recorded by the Beatles.
