  • The BisMerc, my Mercedes W124 300CE has thrown up a fairly serious rust issue I was not aware of.. this forces me into more repair work and while there I also address the rust problem under the washer bottle..

I know what you mean about trying to keep the noise down, especially when it’s a bank holiday, some people just want to relax in their garden, the last thing they want to hear is a grinder and hammer, what a nice chap you are 👍, well done with the repair’s and hope to see the Ferrari soon, until next time, Happy Easter Jack,👍👍.

Hi, I really like the current interior, the cloth is so period correct, reminds me of my childhood. My uncle had a 300te with the same colour.
    Best wishes Richard.

Don't wait on the ball joints. They are under tension, so when they go, the front end drops. Also, the upper spring mount bushings tend to come apart and then the shock goes through the hood, so make sure those are good. I'd go with Bilstein for the shocks and I found the "comfort" Bilstiens to be perfect for the 124, but I like a nicer ride. The spring pads are probably also toast. You can adjust the ride height, to some extent, by using different thicknesses of those. And yeah, those jack points...ugh...BTDT.

W124 suspension. Bilstein dampers. OEM standard springs...if this model has a steering damper... change it as well.
Then do anti roll bar bushes and be amazed

And there are 2 types of bilsteins. There's a heavyduty set, which is a bit harder and sportier, and a softer one, which is closer to factory. The OEM ones (at least on the saloons) were Sachs dampers.

Agree, I had one of these, installed Bilstein and the ride was perfect... The one I had was a 1993 300D, I can honestly say that of all the other cars I have had since nothing comes close to the all round package these w124 gives in terms of ride quality and so called "experienced quality". I could dive that car for 12 hours and get out like it was 12 minutes, just such a pleasant car in every way.

This era of Mercedes was great. Build quality was amazing. But the rust was W124 problem. For some reason R129 and W140 didn't have much rust issues... until the issues came back to the "rounded lamp era" 1998-2007. When W212 and W204 were introduced, all body rust issues were pretty much gone for good. 1998-2007 was the worst era for Mercedes-Benz without a doubt and W203 was sh*t. However W204 was very solid car. Someone suggested that it was the water-based paint which increased the problem.

I have a set of 30- 60mm Red Violet Vogtland Sport Springs that I got with my 300E 24 Valve Klassic. I think they are really good quality. 16" rims would look good on your Coupe. My windscreen washer bottle will not stop leaking around the pump motors. I have tried everything but they still leak. My 1992 Saab 900 Turbo Sedan has sudden onset, empathic leakage. I miss the wild, original paint job on your Merc, but it looks taut and tidy. Nice welding work on the jacking point Jack. Lovely weather there. Hope you are happy in your new home. It looks tranquil. I am still really enjoying your channel. THANK YOU for sharing your adventures. I hope you are enjoying the work as much as I do watching the videos. Damn those pesky jacking points. A potential problem on all, but hidden beneath the Sacco panels cars on W201/C124/S124 and W124 - they can't be seen until much worse. I covered this in my W201 buying guide video (thankfully I got lucky). The first thing I did was clear all the drain holes, around the sunroof, near the scuttle / battery tray rodding them out with wire or brewer pipe. You can get repair sections but appreciate it's a job you didn't need... good luck with a fix Jack.

I have a whole fleet of rusty 124s and 202s and have tried everything over the years. I'm a decent mechanic but hate body work and have no skills. Epoxy/fiberglass seems to be the best option by far. I think i'll try improving my welding skills but to be fair, i still have a Renault in my yard that is a crumbling pile of rust. The only solid parts are the fiberglass floor pans and the surrounding metal. I've seen welds rusting from the inside out within a year. My daily driver 124 features fiberglass at the rear jacking points and where the grommets used to be inside a wheel arch. The trick is to have a clean metal surface, use at least two layers of fiberglass mat and epoxy, i grab this stuff at the local boat store. Greetings from France!

As far as the Bismirck's suspension, I'd check the spring rates of the springs that are on the car, and then take that information along with the car's weight to the shock/damper people. Ideally, you'd also have an idea what the weight is of the suspension pieces is at each corner. That is the information that the shock/damper people will need to make a recommendation since the shocks/damper have to match the suspension frequency. Alternatively, make sure that you have stock springs at each corner and than at least you can go with stock shocks/dampers. The final way to do it is to buy matched springs and shocks/dampers that others have already engineered.

Known rust area on these and many Mercs with this style jacking point. I would have tried to get a cut from a scrap car and splice it in- doesn't have to be pretty as you don't see it. Failing that I have used several layers of tin foil to make a template (place it on a good section and rub so it takes the form) and then with the aid of a vice and appropriate diameter pipe , hammer, bending etc made a pretty good copy.

H&R 40mm lowering kit! It cost me about £550 a couple of years ago. Still surprisingly comfortable but amazing handling and cool looks. Plus if you are doing that, you may as well replace all the rear suspension link arms, ARB bushes, track rod ends etc. Total maybe £750 in parts, 2 days labour (for a DIYer). MB won't sell a sportline kit for a non-sportline car, and even if they did it'd be expensive and possibly not as good (maybe slightly more comfortable though?)

Batteries are batteries at the end of the day.
Also funnily enough, my father has owned B5 Audi A4's/S4's and now an RS4. The expensive Bosch batteries lasted the same as the eBay ones and same for the other cars we've had. It's just about how you look after them that determines their life.

Cheapest place to get a battery for an Audi A4? Under the bonnet of the first Audi A4 you find parked in the road! 😆

A leather interior and wood trim would transform the overall quailty and look.

I disagree! For me changing the interior would be a complete waste of time and money.

The most economical method is to do nothing. It won't be added value if you decide to sell. Do the ball joint and any other dodgy bushings instead.

"ribbed" "stiff" "good ride" , more like a carry-on film this episode, oo err missus...
dont forget the "12 inch" rule, [got me doing it now!], any repairs within 12 inches of a load-bearing structure must be fully seam-welded with original thickness metal, how far away from strut tower are you? as always, a good grinder + paint makes you the welder you aint... [my motto]
