    If for whatever reason I could only have one pedal, this is it. Interesting overdrive, modulation, and echo. And it can define your sound, especially with the wobble. I’ve had it for a few years and I find a new cool sound every time I use it.

    I use the deco not only for guitar but when I have to record electric drums, I turn the saturation at 9 o clock and use the lag time as a double tracker. Makes the electric drums sound more acoustic.

    I have all the Strymon pedals except their drives, purchased a Deco shortly after watching this video, and to this day it is my single most valued Strymon pedal... and that is saying a LOT.

      I am buying a deco. The flanger and saturation is the best I have heard in a pedal. I love Status quo, Jefferson starship and those flanger tape sounds... This nails them to a tee when I tried it.

      I have both on my board, and this is 100% true. The Deco is hands down the most inspiring and musical pedal I’ve ever had. It’s the center of my whole sound. If I had to pick two pedals for the rest of my life, they’d be the Deco and the Flint.

    When I had watched other reviews of this pedal it sounded like a really cool pedal, but still they left me wondering is it worthwhile having this on my pedalboard. This review really helped me to understand what it sounds like in a rock context, the overdrive sounds fantastic. I'll say it again, great review!

    You can use the DECO for so many different functions (saturation, overdrive, flanger, phaser, chorus, delay, double tracker, etc, etc!), it's an extremely versatile pedal (arguably one of Strymon's best). Depending on the function you're using at the time (and of course your personal taste), the DECO can literally go anywhere in the chain. Rabea did a great job demoing this pedal (That Pedal Show also has a really good review on the DECO).
    The DECO pedal makes a really great argument for getting a pedal effects switcher (Boss ES-8, Boss ES-5, GigRig 2, etc.). That lets you just plug the DECO into the effects switcher and then position the DECO in the chain wherever your heart desires simply by using the menus/memories on the switcher! (no need to unplug and rearrange pedals). Using the multiple memories of the switcher, you can have the DECO at the front of chain, rear of chain or anywhere in between, whatever makes the most sense for the song you're playing and the effect you're looking for. I have the DECO already and having a blast with it. Can't wait to get a switching system sometime down the road and then really open up all sorts of possibilities. Good luck!

      Greg Adler Helpful comments.. I have a Belle Epoch Deluxe (and Epoch Pre) and wondering if this is redundant?

    • @grega1207
      @grega1207 5 років тому

      Tricko, As to your question of redundancy to the Strymon DECO, sure the DECO can do a tape echo style of effect but it does so many other things in addition to that (think Swiss army knife!) I personally wouldn't put the tape echo at the top of the list of things the DECO does. Thus IMHO, I wouldn't consider it redundant to your Belle EPOCH at all. In fact I think they would make a really sweet combination. To me personally, the DECO has so many features and capabilities it can compliment many other pedals without ever being totally redundant. Check out That Pedal Show which shows all kinds of things the DECO can do
      ua-cam.com/video/kuj0Oi2_7yU/v-deo.html
      With so many types and styles of delays and echos, you could argue one could never have too many delays to choose from (although not all on at the same time!!)
      That Epoch is one cool pedal. That Pedal Show has a good review on three tape echo pedals (Strymon El Capistans, Belle Epoch, Echoplex. ua-cam.com/video/729c1YkDyWc/v-deo.html.
      They do a great job tweaking each of the pedals as well as doing a lot of AB comparisons between the pedals. The EPOCH is one really cool pedal, thanks for bringing it to my attention. All three are really good actually, I'm just not able to decide what precise characteristics I'm after so I'll have to keep listening and figure it out someday. Thanks for the write and have fun with your Belle Epoch.

    @Rabea, where was deco placed in the signal chain? Is it before the amp or in the signal loop? Strymon website says that it is designed to be last-in-chain effect, but the effect of "driving the amp with increase in volume" is typical for overdrive pedals placed in front of the amp. Using Deco in front of the amp would make it a highly-priced-overdrive-buffer-pedal somehow. Or am I wrong and this pedal is really different than way cheaper buffers?

      well you didn't ask me, but I'd place it at the very end, even after the reverb. Strymon recommends that as well. The reason is simple: If you'd record on a real tape machine, all your pedals will play in the machine. No one listening to a tape record whould place any pedals after it, right? That's what it's built for but do whatever you like with it. The sauration is not like a gain stage, it's to warm up your overall tone and make it sound more vintage.

    • @MarkusJunnikkala
      @MarkusJunnikkala 6 років тому

      The beauty about this pedal is that you can use it in so many different places in your signal chain. I use it at the end of mine, to saturate the overall tone as well as bring some of that tape wobble to the sound. If you're using a harder saturation setting for overdrive, or the tape deck for chorus, flanging, delay, then you might be inclined to use it earlier in the chain.

Can anyone recommend the best placement of this pedal. Like after my gain/drive pedals and before my other effect pedals or at the very end of the chain? I realize the mileage may vary but any suggestions on someone who has experimented. I don't run an fx loop and usually split into two different amps for stereo.

    I am a great admirer of yours here in Brazil , I wonder , the sound that you did by adding the pedals strymons Timeline and Bigsky, which the binding order them ... The signal comes from guitar and is first turned on the timeline and then the reverb ? or the contrary ? big hug.

      So. I 'm calling right ( Guitar - > Timeline - > Bigsky -> Pa) Why when I call both my delay disappears? Do not get the same depth , the same reverb is not with the same ambience . Victory at Video Amps when u connects the two strymons the sound was amazing ! What's your secret ? Big hug!

    hey Bea could You please explain me something? I noticed in a production tutorial done by Ola Englund he uses a compressor with 0ms attack time and a good amount of gain reduction on ALL of the guitars( double tracking). Doesn't it remove all the "life" from the strings? Why should he do that?
    PS: AWESOME playing as always!!

    • @RabeaMassaad
      @RabeaMassaad  9 років тому

      I think it depends on the producer and the kind of music you are wanting to mix. I tend not to really do a lot to my guitar tracks other than a little bit of compression. One thing I do do is pull out most of the low-end. anything above 120 250 Hz gets shelved to allow the bass to come through the mix

    • @beatsbyfred
      @beatsbyfred 9 років тому

      ***** He was producing a metal song( let's say in the style of Periphery). Personally I think the only reason to use a 0 ms attack time is when You wanna remove some transients, but there is no reason for doing this in a metal production. Am I wrong?

    • @Beizeiten78
      @Beizeiten78 8 років тому +1

      +fedetehk Depending on your threshold, you could be removing all the transients. Thus, a compressor working all the time is pointless, but the perceived volume increase on the make up sometimes makes people think it sounds better, and completely flattening it can sound "thicker". Depending on the style of metal, most of the distorted guitar(s) is nearly fully compressed by virtue of the amp creating the distortion. Dynamic metal guitar parts are usually more from track automation when mixing, than anything actually being generated by the guitarist. Hope that makes sense.

    Hey Bea, I'm looking to get one of these to use as a chorus, phaser unit. In the video you say that you use it as a saturdation pedal in front of the amp. How does the Deco work in the effects loop? Would the saturation side be wasted if its in the loop? Thanks man, great videos!

    • @anarchocommunist9154
      @anarchocommunist9154 8 років тому +1

      +Lee de Mora In the effects loop it would be more like a tape simulator, adding a tape-y vibe to the sound you created from your pedals and amp. Placed before the amp, it's more like a distortion (and double tracking, obviously) pedal.

    I don't get why pedals are so expensive

      Well, look what they can do. Guitarists can do so much to their tone with pedals. After a while of buying pedals, you can sell them back and buy a brand new guitar with them!

      JorisBronze They are expensive, but actually decent value for money. Boutique pedal companies such as strymon buy massive amounts of components and test them individually to see which will sound the best, a lot of components can't be used so those cost the company. The main factor really is the time taken to build them, handbuilt pedals take a long time to solder and put together, so you have to factor the wages of those making them in. The other thing with Strymon pedals is they use a really powerful DSP chip (which aint' cheap), but also needs a huge amount of research and development time needs to go into coding the DSP software. Small pedal companies don't actually make a huge amount of profit, to my knowledge most pedal builders make about as much as a teachers on a starting salary, which isn't much.
      Bigger companies like Boss/MXR etc who's products are mass produced do make considerably more profit per unit than most of the Boutique guys because the pedals are faster and cheaper to produce.
