Anyone else feel like the video cut off early? I love the content though, I didn't know about planting sweet peas in the fall. Something to try this fall!
I am actually growing iceberg lettuce right now. The seeds is from my mom, I found them in the cabin after she died along with a bunch of other seeds. The date on the package says 1998. 🙈 😂 Of course everyone didn't germinate, but at least half of them! 😮 Really tasty salad too 😂😊
I have plants from my parent's garden. One plant is from Germany 🇩🇪🇩🇪. It means so much to me, like you. Seeds from 1998. I hope you can get SEEDS from the food. We are VERY BLESSED,
Yes. And iceberg lettuce does have flavor. So many people don’t realize it will. I like it. I swear for years restaurant industries used salad dressings to disguise the fact that their commercial grown lettuce was grown wrong had no flavor. Grown correctly at home and used without sitting week or 2 it tastes pretty good.
Yogurt goes waaaaay past the buy date too, like MONTHS! Just keep it in the fridge and it'll be great! Might have to mix a little more and might be a little more sour but it's absolutely fine to eat. Probably not years tho, lol
I was also going to comment on this. It true for most dairy, they are fine past the sell by date. When Jess was mentioning dairy, I was imagining thousands of people tossing away good food. Of course, I realize she did not mean to imply that. Lol
I love that company! The seed packet also opens up with more information on the inside of it. I had some seeds that I had had for years, given to me by my late mother. I finally decided to grow them and I did sow them more heavily and now I have a ton of little tomato seedlings.
In 2022 I planted Connecticut Field Pumpkin seeds from 2008 that had been in the seed storage jar in a bedroom closet. I got the most beautiful plants and pumpkins. I left some of the seeds on top of the soil last Fall. I now have about 20 plants growing. Always give seeds a chance. You may get a very pleasant surprise.
A funny story from the 1970’s about the importance of knowing what your seedlings 🌱 are supposed to look like. And that you should also know what to expect your mature plants to look like. Remember that we didn’t have the internet back then and so we couldn’t do a quick check on line to see what any plant was supposed to look like. We had only seen things in the grocery stores. They sold rhubarb, in the form of just red celery stocks with no leafy part. I was a teenager and my best friend and I were very good friends with a very spiritual lady who was close to 40yrs old. Her youngest son, was our age. But we barely knew him because he was one of “the cool kids“ and we were “the weird kids “ and never the two shall mix. One year his mother, LoisAnn was adding new plants to her garden that she had never grown before. One of them was rhubarb. She took great care of prepping her beds. She planted her rhubarb seeds, and watered, fertilized and doted on them. What came up and grew to full maturity never looking like the rhubarb in the grocery stores, LoisAnn was perplexed. She also had a real problem with cut worms. Every time this plant would get a dense cluster of leaves together at the ends of the branches she would come out in the morning and find all the tips had been cut away, and there was nothing on the ground, and she couldn’t find what was attacking her “ rhubarb”. So one night she heard noises coming from her garden like voices and so she thought to herself, “maybe people have been stealing my rhubarb.”and so she called the police and the police dutifully came and the police looked at her rhubarb plantsand they looked at her and they looked at her rhubarb, and they said “So you’re the one!” And she said, “I’m the one, what?” And they taking out their handcuffs said, “The one who’s been supplying the entire neighborhood with marijuana!” And of course, LoisAnn was confused and astonished that anyone would accuse her, of all people, of growing marijuana. Why she had never even seen marijuana in her entire life. She had no idea what it looked like. Fortunately she had enough character witnesses and the logic of why would she call the police about her rhubarb being stolen if she knew that she was actually growing marijuana instead of rhubarb. The local DA knew the family and decided not to prosecute her and told the police not to bother with further investigation since it would be a difficult case to prove in court and the only Judge was a neighbor with grandkids who went to school with her kids. Back in those days everybody knew each other, and everybody pretty much knew the character of each of their neighbors. But at least it solved the mystery for her as to why the rhubarb never turned red and why the tops kept getting cut off. And for my friend and I solved the mystery of why her son was one of the cool kids at school. To the day she died,no one has ever told that her son had opened the package, switched the seeds, and glued the package closed. 😮😂😮
My favorite way to eat beets is to shred them raw with a cheese grater into a mixed green salad with homemade balsamic vinaigrette (balsamic, olive oil, mustard, honey, grated garlic, basil, S & P). They are amazing and turn the salad a brilliant magenta. Bonus: they are a great liver and blood detoxifier.
ReJen Lifestyle; Simple recipes are the best, thank you 😊 I screenshot to give it a try. My mom would take a thin slice of beet and rub on her cheekbones for a natural cosmetic. She is vegan.

The seedling drawing is very helpful...my former husband was amazed that I could identify seedlings that a wanted to grow vs weeds that were not beneficial...and those that were beneficial and let grow...I m lucky I had a grandmother that I spent many summers with and taught me well
My daughter worked at our local co-op store, and she called when all the plants last year were on clearance and then seeds! She actually got a lot of plants for free, so we had lots of new plants last year, and we have already planted out clearance seeds from last year and have them germinated! :) Gotta love a sale!!
I love beets, always have, always will....the perfect vegetable with nothing wasted, tops and roots. But the first year I planted golden beets it was all over but the shoutin'. I even eat the baby things raw right there in the garden. So sweet!
I miss videos of you sifting through seeds in the greenhouse telling us what you have and what you do with it. I feel like it really helps remind us not to give up on certain crops but to find a variety that might be a loophole!
I did not know that that's why beets taste like that! I love that earthy flavor! Thank you Jess I love taking your class ( that's what your videos feel like)
I've had decent germination of seed vault sealed seeds I bought in 2008 - the unopened packages definitely did well. I'm glad you mentioned it because I had doubts about the paper envelope seeds I still have but I'll test them out & be happy I saved some money...because man the new seeds I've bought are smaller amounts for higher prices.
For newbies that dont necessarily want to place a mail order for Botanical Interest seeds, our Ace Hardware stores always carry them in store. Im sure its nationwide.

Jess- If you like salads, try grating your beets raw. They are very mellow and a nice crunchy addition. I know you are dairy-free now, but adding feta cheese and some kind of nut makes a pretty delicious salad.
Not only do bees 💚 Sweet Alyssum, so do parasitic wasps, hoverflies, and ladybugs, which are all fantastic predatory insects to have in the garden. I like to plant alyssum near anything with aphid issues because the hoverfly larvae and ladybugs (in all their stages) will devour the aphids for you.
Have you had any luck growing alyssum from seed? Any tricks I’m missing? 😊 I have tried twice and failed. And this is the one year I can’t find starts at the nurseries!
I grew alyssum transplants in potting mix, inside and winter sowing. Got plants both ways. I do use many seeds per planted cells. Many blessings everyone.
That picture on the back of the seedlings is gold! 😂 I grow new things every year, & I have a horrible weed issue on our property, so it's very helpful to know if it's a weed or a seed I planted.
We are growing the Angel Hair squash variety on a cattle panel tunnel trellis this year. It is already taller than us and has several squashes! It's impressive so far. I'm hoping we can keep the borers away long enough to get a harvest.
Jess, YES, WE ALWAYS NEED SEEDS!!! We can never have too many, and I even share with others and do seed swaps at times! We can NEVER have too many!!!❤❤❤
Botanical Interests seed packets are so so great about all the info they include! As a new gardener, I really appreciated the seedling images, too. And, as a Zone 8b gardener, I also 💚 that they have a section for "Mild Climates" which includes fall-sowing info, when appropriate. That's something I haven't seen from any other seed company.
I love their packets for this same reason! (zone 9a) also they’re just so beautiful to look at spread out on a table when planning my varieties for the next growing season
My goodness Jess! I stopped working outside and ordered 46 packets of seeds😂 Did I need them now? Nope! Will I use them next year? Of course! Haha, my husband shook his head when he asked me what I was ordering. If you sign up for their email subscription, you can get another 10% off. Now back out to the gardens :)

Regarding Beets - I've found that Spring-planted beets (regardless of variety) seem to have more of that "earthy flavor" than ones planted in late summer, early autumn and go through at least one good frost before harvest. The same for turnips - they're sweeter tasting after a frost. Love the seed haul and have been fighting buying more right now... We are planting some of every variety we have and all of some varieties just to see if we can get them to maturity. Thanks so much, Jess!
It’s because when a plants like turnips, carrots, and beets are going through colder weather, the plant is building up its natural sugars to be able to survive the cold. Sugar protects the plant from freezing because then it flowers in the spring.
@@mountainsandmayhem739 I only mentioned the beets going through a frost tasting different because Jess was saying if someone thinks they don't like beets, they could try golden ones. I have had golden and traditional red beets, and although I like them both, my family likes the late, cool-weather harvested ones better regardless of variety.
Our son also loves the thinner tender green beans so I am growing a few skinny options, including the Tavera French Filet from Botanical Interests. Because we are in the process of building out our urban garden and do not have a proper greenhouse or grow room, our plants are a bit behind but we do have baby green beans starting to pop up! We have 5 raised beds (tall & short, big & small) but are still putting up some of the final supports/trellises and putting plants in their final homes. I am still very proud of our garden space tho and our neighbors and the regular joggers & dog walkers love watching how it progresses because it is all in our corner lot front yards.
We love beets. Roasted, pickled and we love them boiled, mashed and add butter. So good. I love seed from Botanical Interest. So many varieties and great seed company with a great price.
Rouge Royale, it's the black sunflower in that mix I believe. Because I have grown the Rouge Royale variety from Botanical interest and a lot of them were so dark red they were black. I fell in love with that variety and I love planting them with other bright color varieties as well as with Love lies bleeding amaranth.
Remember the 87- year-old Crimson Giant tomato from Luke Marion at MI GARDENER? - No, seeds don’t expire! Thank you for sharing the message. Best wishes from Kate in Olympia, WA - 5/28/2023.
This video is perfect timing. I’m gonna buy some of their seeds. The seedling pictures would be so helpful. I’ve gardened in the past but starting new stuff this year and I have no idea what’s a weed vs. seedling. Thank you so much for sharing!! I appreciate you and your videos 😁
I ordered from this sale and am also hoping MIGardener will do their 50% off sale in August like they’ve been doing the past few years, so I can get a few things off my wishlist from there. I went and counted and I have 162 different packs of seeds (plus 12 more just ordered from botanical interests that haven’t arrived yet), some are multiple variety mixes, so I have over 174 different varieties of seeds 😮.
I LOVE the Orient Wonder Yard Long Beans! They grow great even in our extremely hot and humid summers down in Florida. They’re about the only bean that can last all summer here (besides cowpeas).
YES!! I LOVE botanical interest seed company! That is the only company I get my seeds from. Not because I buy them it’s because a store I have here where I live they give me all there “expired” out of date seeds. So I stock up on seeds. Yea I love this company. Plus I give a lot of seeds away. There is no way I can plant all those seeds. Anyhow, love this video Jess. Keep em coming.
Loving the matter of fact clear definition of seed package vs actual viability here. The only bad thing was I was sorely tempted to shop for seeds when I could barely keep my eyes open after watching this last night. 🤪 I think I left something in my cart after I fell into that temptation. 😆
Jess, I'm sure that you know this info, but for those who aren't aware, Botanical Interests was recently purchased by another garden UA-camr, Kevin, who runs the channel Epic Gardening and Epic Homestead. His content is really entertaining and informational.
Best beet recipe in my opinion; two beets (raw, peeled), one apple - grated together. Dill and feta to taste (the more feta the better). Add handful of raisins and pumpkin seeds. Dress with oil of your choice and lemon juice. Best if left in the fridge for a least an hour before eating. Yum!! There is never enough of this when I make it.
Wow Jess, had to go back 11 months to find a video I had missed! I must have been super busy! 😮 As this is an almost a year old Beaujolies is pronounced Bow- Zha-lay in case you were wondering! Thanks laughing with you not at you! Your joy of all things seeds and gardening is infectious! As soon as I saw the distinctive seed box from Botanical Interests I said to myself how did I miss this! I love all the information we get to glean from you in these videos! Looking forward to any upcoming seed sales from BI 😊
for years I have been saying that I wish there was a book or something that showed plants in seedling form. That way I'll know if something is something deliberate or not. I am so impressed that Botanical Interests does that. Going to the website to see if they ship to Canada
Roasting our beets was a game changer (I love them pickled but there's only so much of that my family will eat) My 8 year old loves roasting carrots, beets and brussel sprouts drizzled with oil and honey. Nom
Whenever I think of your pkg of carrot seeds I think of someone in the future in desperate straights walking or digging in in a future place and finding them and being super excited and getting to plant them or them having just grown. I see them eating eating those carrots and being so thankful and blessed to find them. Good things happen and maybe someone else needed those seeds
Thank you for doing this. I counted something like 30 questions. My seeds are dated last year. Are they still good? I don’t care how many times you say they are they’re not gonna listen to us, but they’ll listen to you!
❤️ I ordered from Botanical Interest during the sale😃🌱 my son says that I may have a seed buying problem 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I told him there is No such thing. Thank you ❤
I purchased a perennial sweet pea today from Monticello. They are really pretty and will climb on whatever it is growing near. Only issue it doesn’t smell like the pretty smelling ones you are use to BUT are good for cut flowers.
In the winter I pull out my seed stash and dream of spring days to come. I love beets, especially pickled. I’ve been known to eat a half pint of them on my own!
I found a bag of dried beans in the bottom of my moms freezer that had expired 12 yrs ago. I wanted to see if they would sprout. Everyone that I planted sprouted and grew.
Thank you for talking about this sale the other day! I may have spent all my birthday money on these seeds. They are expected to come on Tuesday. I'm so excited!!
Me seeing this video posted... don't watch, don't watch, you don't need more seeds. I watched. I need more seeds!!! 😂😂😂 Plus, I love to hear what Jess has to say!
I've heard about this sale at least 4 times since it started and this little seed haul ... finally made me pull the trigger to buy some. Replacements for green beans, some artichokes, some squash. Why does buying seeds make me so giddy?
I ordered the same sweet peas last week 😆. I did get the high scent sweet pea as well though. I also got Purple Tear Honeywort seeds. I loved the story behind it and how elegant they are.
I started all my plants for my 2023 garden purchased in December 2022. Since then, I have made a purchase from MIgardner and Rareseeds. LOL. “Do I need them?” No, but we want them. I still have to buy some cow peas.
“ I don’t need any more seeds” said no die hard gardener ever! 😂
I try not to think about it until after the new ones come! Even then, I only think: oh well, too late now!
Oh, I SAY it. Doesn't affect my actions, tho. 😂
My husband asks me if I really need those seeds that I just bought? I said well no I dont need them I WANT them :) LOL

You have made me love seeds! This year I made a seed binder! I love it! Just placed a big order…lol
I’m with ya seed sister!!
I just received my Botanical Interest order today!! Oh joy!
I didn't get the last of the video! That's ok! I went to the site and checked it out! Thanks for sharing all the great information!!
😂❤
A tiny dab.
Where are you doing this?
Yes, I too succumbed to the Botanical Interest seed sale. 😢😢😢. I LOVE buying seeds. The promise of new life in the form of plants!, 🌻👩🏻🌾🍅🌶️🥬🫛🥕
Loving the matter of fact clear definition of seed package vs actual viability here. The only bad thing was I was sorely tempted to shop for seeds when I could barely keep my eyes open after watching this last night. 🤪 I think I left something in my cart after I fell into that temptation. 😆
I love botanical interests , I always get my seeds in a timely manner and the germination rate is very good. Thanks for introducing them to me.
Good morning Jess have an awesome time planting Happy Memorial Day weekend
Thanks Jess. I just ran over and ordered 16 packs of seeds. Great prices and exciting new seeds.
Pronunciation was Great! Just like the Wine!!!
Thanks for the reminder! Such a busy weekend that I almost missed the seed sale. You can never have too many seeds. ;)
Jess, I'm sure that you know this info, but for those who aren't aware, Botanical Interests was recently purchased by another garden UA-camr, Kevin, who runs the channel Epic Gardening and Epic Homestead. His content is really entertaining and informational.
Did not know that. Thanks for the info.
That sounds amazing!
I have seeds vacuum sealed in mylar from 2012, and they're still germinating!
great idea
Wow Jess, had to go back 11 months to find a video I had missed! I must have been super busy! 😮 As this is an almost a year old Beaujolies is pronounced Bow- Zha-lay in case you were wondering! Thanks laughing with you not at you! Your joy of all things seeds and gardening is infectious! As soon as I saw the distinctive seed box from Botanical Interests I said to myself how did I miss this! I love all the information we get to glean from you in these videos! Looking forward to any upcoming seed sales from BI 😊
I love Botanical Interests seeds ❤
for years I have been saying that I wish there was a book or something that showed plants in seedling form. That way I'll know if something is something deliberate or not. I am so impressed that Botanical Interests does that. Going to the website to see if they ship to Canada
hey girl i wanna use your affliate link but i can't get it to work
Roasting our beets was a game changer (I love them pickled but there's only so much of that my family will eat)
My 8 year old loves roasting carrots, beets and brussel sprouts drizzled with oil and honey.
We’ve been using mostly 2019 seeds this year. Just plant a few extra in each hole. With only a few exceptions they do well.
Found some nice flower choices! Thanks for the reminder.
Thank you ❤
Thank you for sharing Botanical Interest! I signed up for emails and received an additional 10% off!!
You're so cute! You look so excited to open the box.
"Do I need seeds? No, but that's not what we're talking about" 😂 I'm using that one for sure
Put the artichokes around the greenhouse with your roses. They would look amazing together when some of those artichokes bloom.
Hi Jess, just letting you know the end of your video is cut off. I know how you like to have your sign off. :)
Thank you for talking about this sale the other day! I may have spent all my birthday money on these seeds. They are expected to come on Tuesday. I'm so excited!!
Me seeing this video posted...
don't watch, don't watch, you don't need more seeds.
I watched. I need more seeds!!! 😂😂😂
Plus, I love to hear what Jess has to say!
Ooh, evertime I see that beautiful table top, the hair on my arms and neck stand.
I've heard about this sale at least 4 times since it started and this little seed haul ... finally made me pull the trigger to buy some. Replacements for green beans, some artichokes, some squash. Why does buying seeds make me so giddy?
Seed planting is an act of hope and a lot of fun too. Many blessings all.
Love you Jess, thank you for the seed news. I will definitely get in on that
Thanks for sharing! First time hearing of this company. Just placed my order!
I'm sure you probably already know, but anyways Kevin from Epic Gardening now owns Botanical Interests.
Tractor Supply was throwing out their "outdated" seeds and I got about 30 packets free last year! I'm growing them all this season!
