    With our material we use a wet and dry process to remove the clay before cleaning in a weak acidic solution. Every time the piece dries out the trapped clay shrinks and cracks allowing more to come out when rinsed. The only way to get the heavy iron staining off is with some type of cleaner that attacks metals. I use oxilac acid which only attacks the iron staining and not the crystal itself.

    You could try a crockpot if your in a hurry or they have a lot of iron on them.. but make sure to use it outdoors because of the vapors! Another easy way for crystals with just a little iron on them is to put the crystals and the acid in a 5 gallon bucket with a lid and let it sit out in the sun. We use big vats and a fire just because we clean so much and want it done quickly. But if you dont mind waiting the bucket/sun method is the easiest!

    Omg, the amount of quartz here is amazing! I didn't realize they came like this. I thought these clusters were found only in rocks. Is there anywhere else in the Western U.S. I can find them like this? These pieces are absolutely beautiful! Your video was very informative. Thank u:)

    So hoping you can help. I mixed at a ratio of 1 cup acid to 1 gallon of water as I had read somewhere but it turned crystals yellow within hours. Read that may be too strong so is there a magic ratio? Was mixed with extremely hot water. Also how do you dispose of that much acid?

    If you would be happy finding smalls, damaged clusters or clusters with a lot of matrix on them then paying to look through tailings is a good option. You will find crystals that way. I myself would prefer a option where I may find the really good high dollar material. A bad day digging in a pit for the good stuff beats a good day looking through left over tailings in my opinion.

    So fascinating to see the process of how these crystals and other like amethyst are cleaned for selling. I would love to fossick for my own crystals I collect mostly amethyst and quarts. Looks like there is quit a demand for them if you are mining that many. I live in Australia, there are several spots where quarts and amethyst can be found and I intend on trying it some day. Hey there! This is super informative! I would just want to ask if this method works on Fluorite or garnets as well. I'm more of a Fluorite collector and most are pretty solid clean, but there are some stubborn stains and I'm unsure if the method used for Quartz can be used for Fluorite (somewhat softer?) or Garnets. Thanks!!!

    • @kingofquartz
      @kingofquartz  8 років тому

      +posh gypsy This tank is stainless steel. Its a old cheese fermentation vat. Most guys just use regular steel vats but the acid eats them up in a few years. The stainless is more expensive but last MUCH longer. This vat is about 8 years old now and I've just had to repair a few little pin holes. You can only use oxilac acid in metal containers... muriatic acid would eat them up in a matter of days rather than years

    Thank you for this video, I have found a ton of rocks with clear and orange tiny, druzy like crystals forming on them. They are like cemented inside this grey-colored stone that I can scrub off pretty easily but I dont know if these crystals are just scattered inside this rock or will look like yours do if I wash them. Its hard to explain without a picture but Im worried I may be wasting my time. Any clue what it is I am working with? I wish I had more geology training to explain this better

    You'll spend a couple hundred dollars for access to the pit at sweet surrender and it is a bit of a gamble. The mine owner cant guarantee you will hit a killer pocket, but I've seen people find pockets there worth thousands. No one really knows whats in a pocket until its been dug out. If everyone hit pockets of museum pieces then the owner wouldnt allow people access.. but you have better odds there than anywhere else : )

    I am planning a crystal hunting trip to Arkansas, did you have to go into a private open pit mine, and dig through the tailings, or are clusters like these not found in private mine tailings or can you find that kind of assortment of crystals on your own? where were this crystals found ? If I may ask, would love to be able to find such a variety.

      some people use water glass or sodium silicate to fuse them back, but research more I think. I have used some epoxies from Loctite at home depot, but some of it yellows over time. maybe check with a stone countertop fabricator or supply house for what they have.....

    Hi. How much Oxalic acid do you use? I did some beautiful crystal clusters I had in a bath and it took the shine from my crystals and turned the clear ones white and made some a sulfer yellow and ruined them.

    • @stephanelair8285
      @stephanelair8285 4 роки тому

      For the shine part did you used tap water? because you need to used only
      water without minerals, after the bath with oxalic acid.

      For the yellow part i have the same problem, when I kept them in oxalic more than two days.
      To resolve this issue you have to put them in a Demineralised water for a few days or more, it depends of how yellow it's become.
      But I'am curious because he don't seem to have this problem, in the video, he talk about keeping them week in the oxalic.
      There probably some reason. :)

    When I remove clay from rocks, I soak the dirty rocks overnight in plain water in a 5-gallon bucket. The next day, I remove one rock at a time give it a good scrub with a scrub brush and transfer it to a bucket of clean water. All the scrubbed rocks then soak overnight. Any rocks that are still really dirty get scrubbed a second time and rinsed and then all the rocks get treated by soaking in detergent water or an mild acid bath or some other chemical and water solution. And then they are soaked in clean water again, scrubbed, rinsed and then air dried. This works for me, but then I am dealing with a light yellow clay from the Southwest which is probably a lot less sticky than the red clay from the southern U.S.

I have a ultrasonic cleaner, and dental tools...... Should I invest in an air scribe/ water gun?? I'd rather not use chemicals, I'm just a personal collector.

    These are all from a private mine thats not open to the public. Typically you wont find stuff like this in tailings. Most of the places open to the public for a small fee are tailings only and you find the left overs from us miners. If you know how to mine Sweet Surrender Crystal mine will let tourists dig in actual pockets for fair fee. To really take advantage you will have to put some work into it.. but its the only way a tourist can dig pieces like these for themselves.

    @techkitsune 8 років тому

    If I may offer a suggestion, you'll have an easier time removing the rust if you switch your acid bath type. Use oxalic acid, it's especially effective on iron oxide staining. Also, for your clay issue, soak the rocks for one solid day, let the clay absorb as much water as it can, then just hit it with lightly-pressurized water stream (thumb over the hose is enough.) You should have no problems blasting the clay directly out.

      @KingOfQuartz Hi My Friend, I found some Quartz/Citrine while walking around a trail by a river creek in the wilderness here in Mount Shasta. They were just laying on the ground and not sure how or why nobody picked them up lol. Most are mangled, but some are very nice, just very small pieces and points. I do have on that is store quality. My question to you is that most of them have this "powdery white/Yellow" stuff on them that is so dang hard to remove, seems to go deep in grooves of the quartz. I have done wire brushing, cleaners, lime away, white vinegar, bleach and ammonia all to little to no success. I may try "CLR" from the hardware store before I go to "acid". Any knowledge of what that "powdery" stuff is and how to get it off? I also found a very small amethyst/ametrine gen in the same area, strange that they all were laying there and nothing else really to find after I picked them off the ground. So weird.Thanks for any advice!

      @@ChristopherSchiffermiller i. clr has acid in it, that's why it works...phosphoric acid. I've heard great things about oxalic acid in water, with heat. This same guy (king of quartz) once told me of another acid to use when oxalic doesn't work, or for something called geothite, but I can't remember the name lol any luck so far? and some people say the crystals can find YOU in part, so if it shows up out of nowhere, those are ones to keep and use, so they say.
