  • The common factor among the thousands of species of bees in existence is that they all use pollen as a source of protein. Wasps, on the other hand, use meat.

    This is the difference
    Bees are nice and are only trying to do their job, they don't go out of their way to mess you up.
    Wasps are assholes, they don't care how far away you are from them, they'll mess you up and follow you into your home.

    Common misconception - Bees are cool, wasps are not.
    Correction - Bees are fairly cool, but an over-reliance of a single type of bee has resulted in a system of agriculture that could collapse if that bee ever goes extinct.
    Wasps might be annoying, but they are also natural pesticides. They are hunters of caterpillars, locusts/grasshoppers, aphids, weevils; anything and everything that will eat plants, which coincidentally love munching on crops.
    If we could build a system that can efficiently use wasps to help deal with pests, we could potentially solve our pesticide problem.

    Don't confuse a wasps with yellow jackets which are aggressive,nasty painful insects. The paper wasps where I live are fairly benign and will only sting if strongly provoked. Leave them alone,they are beneficial insects because they kill other harmful garden insects.

    Bees: Black and yellow, fuzzy, smaller, not as intimidating
    Wasps: larger, not fuzzy, brown, red, black, etc, thinner connecting point of abdomen, black wings, legs hang down in flight, very intimidating
    (pretty much the one seen here)

    • @ivannotsogreat7501
      @ivannotsogreat7501 8 років тому +10

      I always felt like they should be eradicated too. You don't have to bother them or be wearing cologne for them to sting you. All the open outdoor space they have and they decide to fly your way. It seems like they even curse you out with their wings (it seems that's how they get their frustrations out). Even though I'm scared of them (nearly one of the only things I fear in my life), I have my can of Raid™ in my back pocket, so if I see a wasp (yep, even if it's not bothering me) and let her have it! I feel like it's either them or me. With the attitude that they have, it may take the advantage to sting me if I don't spray it. I really can't stand when they walk with their abdomen in the air. I take that as a threat and they must be killed.

    ok all of my fellow entological geek/nerd pals, i found out what kind of wasp this sexy little honey is. ( we love wikipedia! please donate!) Isodontia mexicana, the Grass-carrying wasp, is a species belonging to the family Sphecidae. It is mainly found throughout North America, but has become established in Europe, primarily France, Switzerland, Hungary, Italy and Spain.
    The adults grow up to 18-20 millimetres (0.71-0.79 in) long, the body is completely black, the thorax is quite hairy and the wings have a smoky-brown color. They can be encountered from early Summer through September. Females are larger and emerge as adults later in the season than males.
    Isodontia mexicana is a typical case of a species arrived accidentally from North America and slowly encroaching on the European continent, probably for the lack of predators or parasites.
    These wasps build their nests in hollowed branches or in other natural cavities, often reusing the nests of other species. Then they line the inside with grass fragments or other plant fibers (hence the name of 'Grass-carrying wasps').
    I. mexicana mainly preys on grasshoppers (usually katydids, Tettigoniidae species) or Tree crickets (Gryllidae species), choosing the small ones and carrying them to its nest to feed the emerging larvae with the living, but paralized Orthoptera. how cool is that? i think i gotz an A++ on this quiz. Yieeeee!

With the growing population I guess we now share more similarities to bees than wasps. I personally prefer the wasp. I love the way they live, that pure hunter gather life, such independent and powerful insects. Bees are still very fascinating though.

      +Tom Foolery hi tom. wasps hornets, yellow jackets and mud daubers rid us of anything smaller and in many cases larger than themselves in the organic garden scheme of things. interestingly, they leave bees alone in the natural realm. probably because they know bees make honey. it's their favorite treat.
      sadly, wasps and hornets have been known to attack bee larvae left unprotected and vulnerable. responsibility of the bee keeper.. this is unfortunate. if the keeper of the bees is smarter than the savy wasp, the wasp will have to look elsewhere for protien. solution; using queen excluders on bee boxes and a watchful bee keeper's eye will thwart the oportunistic wasp. wasps and hornets are the gardians of the garden and killers of pests.. in harmonic balance, and a dilligent, wise, and watchful bee keeper, all will thrive in the natural, and are happy to live life to the fullest. just like us brother tom.

      Bumblebees can sting too, but they aren't that aggressive. Honeybees in general are also a lot less aggressive than wasps. The closer you get to their nests, the bigger the problem you will have, of course.

    • @MaMastoast
      @MaMastoast 8 років тому +4

      in my experience, honey bees also don't seek out humans. They may be attracted to sugar like wasps are, but they seem to get the hint if you wave them off. Wasps are bastards who have no fear and will actually fight back if you deny them their food.. ugh.. wasps are the worst.

      There is also a sacrificial rule for people who plan to bother a nest: Always find a friend that runs slower than you 😲.

      @SuperSparrow45 7 років тому +2

      Social Wasps are aggressive because they have the capability of doing so. Unlike bees, wasps can sting repeatedly and without worry of death. Bees can't do that, since their stinger is barbed and connected to a venom sack. One sting and they die. Wasps also get drunk on nectar after their queen kicks them out of the hive and that's when they become ultra aggressive. This is particular to social wasps only though. Solitary wasps like the dirt dobber are particularly docile and are much more involved in predation of spiders and mosquitos.

    brilliant. wonderful slow motion photography. excellently produced and narrated. 5 out of 5 stars. thank you for bringing to light the balance between wasps and bees to those with limited knowledge. without wasps, preying mantis, spiders and such, bees would starve from pest devistation in organic, no pesticides, non GMO crops. it is a harmonic relationship. a dance of nature. thank you for this most excellent film. short sweet and to the point. i will share it with all. sincerely, the other wasp whisperer. please check out my not so great utube home made crappily filmed effort to show that wasps are fun to play with have feelings too. thanks again. the other wasp whisperer.
