I ran into a HS acquaintance a couple of years ago, soon after he had purchased a Renegade. He really loved it, and he was really excited to tell me that it had the same engine as my Abarth.

I do very much like this car if only because its so bare bones, yet modern and comes with a warranty. I absolutely loathe infotainment systems and driving aids. I also appreciate the manual, even if the clutch can be a pain sometimes. I would never recommend anyone buy a 2.4l auto Renegade.

My 2015 1.4 6sp Latitude is closing in on 170,000 miles. I've owned it since new and the only unscheduled repairs it's needed were a new radiator at around 130k and a replacement uConnect head unit (under warranty) back in 2017. It's an ideal family hauler for a family of 3 and a dog, and a practical commuter as well. One of the best all-around dailies I've ever owned. I'd buy another if they'd sell me a manual.

You always know it's a Roman video when it's 720p. Totally fits the Race To The Bottom feel.
Edit: My 2014 Civic Si Coupe had a clutch delay valve. It can be modded to give better clutch feel and engagement and it's a night and day difference. Totally worth the trouble. Basically there's a little plastic part inside the slave cylinder and once removed, lets the hydraulic fluid flow through way better.

Commiserations on the impending turning forty. I did that this year and… well I’m getting my first colonoscopy tomorrow, so so with that what you will.
As for the Renegade: we got one as a rental during our honeymoon in Sicily in 2019. It was the first time I’d driven abroad, and being from a right-hand driving country, the first time I’d driven wrong (to me) hand drive.
I also had conflicting feelings on the car. We had a 2.0 diesel and an automatic, which was good for us considering the wrongness of the side we were driving. I kinda love the look of the car. The space inside was great. I liked the interior. I felt like it was well enough put together. We had CarPlay (my first time using that, too) but it didn’t mean a total absence of buttons. I think it gets that balance right. It was comfortable, felt powerful enough and had good visibility, which is what you need in Sicily. It had been driven only 1,000km when we got the keys, so everything still felt and smelled new and tight and tidy.
No, the problem came when driving through the narrow, steep roads to Savoca that the engine threw a check engine light. It unfucked itself a couple of days later, then switched it on again just before we arrived at the airport. The Sixt people didn’t seem to care too much. So I liked the car, but it didn’t seem very good.

    First of all, 10/10 video.
Secondly, on to the subject of the transmission. This is the exact reason that those "Endangered Species" stickers exist. A real perfect storm of pissing in the party's punch. Let's break it down, one-by-one.
-Small displacement engine: Emissions and CAFE regs make tiny engines the way to go. This one is tasked with moving a modern and thus heavy (~3,100 lbs) vehicle. Thus, a turbo has to be introduced to match the engine to the job. Turbos=lag.
-Throttle-by-wire: Emissions require the use of throttle-by-wire to prevent rich spikes which would crank emissions, introducing rev-hang and lag.
-Clutch delay valve: Because companies don't trust people to understand how to be gentle, they expect people to just dump the clutch. If you try to drive the thing how you're supposed to drive a manual, you'll be stacking, you guessed it, more lag.
The result is a manual where you release the clutch slowly, and it still isn't engaged, so you let the rest of the way go. BAM, stalled. Okay, restart. Let's be real gentle this time, and BAM. Still stalled. There isn't enough rotating mass at idle to get this thing going. Let's feed in some throttle, but you didn't account for the rev-hang, and BAM stalled. You have to stack recalibrations on recalibrations.
The best cars disappear before you and do as you request without you even thinking about it. You've got to go on an adventure, Nick. An adventure to a time before those regulations caused these problems.

My mom is still making payments on her White 2.4 9AT. I was driven to school in this thing as a kid before taking the bus made more sense. The buses bench seats were on par if a tad better than all the seats in her Renegade. I regrettably got my license with this thing, and almost got t-boned by oncoming traffic due to how thick the A pillars are.
The fact this thing had a manual saddens me- they didn't even try to make it usable. I can imagine offloading with it would involve second guessing and hovering over the e-brake constantly considering how little it took to stall. I would have never driven my last three manual cars if the transmission was setup this way.

Owned a 2018 manual for a while. Abarth pieces fit on this engine btw. Actuators, blow off valves, turbo wraps. Alpha 4C coils and plugs! The exhaust can be bolted off after the cats, threw in a turndown tip and wreaked havoc in town. One of the most fun I had in a company lease ;)

“It just does what you expect it to do without much in the way of complaint.”
This is how I felt about my folks’ 2018 Compass that they had for a few years. Yes, it would use a quart of oil between oil changes from factory. Yes, it rode a bit rough.
But, it was a base model 2.4L automatic with no frills. It was a $20k car at the time. It was a commuter for us all. I drove it my first semester of college and drove it everywhere in the state. It got okay gas mileage for what it was and handled well.
I’m totally fine with a Renegade or Compass. They are just cars with nothing to hide and nothing to brag about. They both just exist and say “Here I am. Take care of me and I’ll take care of you.”

I mean, I love my renegade. Same engine and six speed, only differences are mine has the sunroof that lets you basically take off the entire roof, and instead of lowering my suspension I lifted it. Also it has a tow hitch. And before someone says that a tow hitch on something like this is useless, I moved to Florida last year and drove literally halfway across the country pulling a fully loaded uhaul trailer in that renegade. And it did so fantastically, especially given I made the entire 28 hour trip in one go with only stops for gas and to pee.

This is the level of electronics integration I want in my vehicle...and I say that as someone who has worked in technology for almost 30 years now. These sold quite well, and I advocated for people to get them because they were just... Good. Not great. But good.
Then in 2018 FCA lost their shit, stopped updating them, started increasing prices of all Jeeps and RAMs to cover for their mistakes with Alfa Romeo and Maserati back home, and when the worst event of 2020 happened suddenly there were Jeep Renegades sitting at $32,000 in packs of fifty on dealership lots when most other manufacturers looked like the Mojave Desert with how empty they were. Inventory was up to two hundred days for Renegades at one point, and with the new Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer incoming Stellantis dragged them off the lots with a cane hook and sold them to wholesalers.
So suddenly last summer there were a bunch of these 2020 and 2021 models, brand new and unused, showing up in auction houses getting yoinked by used dealers and pumped onto their lots for $15,000. I bet some of them have five grand in mileage from lot ferrying and test drives despite never once being titled.

You just now hitting 40... Better armor up, cause old age has got you in its sights! I had to buy a Ford Flex just so my spine didn't shatter with every bump in the road! I miss driving something low, fast and sporty to hit the back roads in, but that would hurt just trying. I'm just 41 but I was born with a twisted spine that got worse after 3 rear end hits, the last one put in out of the driving game for good. I was a speed courier for all of my adult life as driving didn't hurt my back, I was doing 400 miles a day for work and then another 100 to 200 miles just taking my girl out riding in the mountains. I LOVED DRIVING! Now it hurts me to get out too much to want to get out.... I have to settle for playing Forza to get my driving fix. (but it isn't even close to the real thing, at least it keeps my reflexes sharp)

To understand the Renegade imo you need to understand the wider Marcchiore strategy for Jeep then Stellantis: to redefine The Car around the SUV. Sure, the Compass and Renegade *seem* to fall under the same SUV size category, but they’re fundamentally built around two European car design identities: the city car (Renegade) and the small station wagon (Compass), except “SUV-ified.” It explains their international success where buyers are less sensitive to car size (or rather, prefer their cars under 5m/16ft), and more presentation/interior.

Bought a lightly used, same-spec 2018 and knew it was important to be in on the joke right away when driving a car that looks like Barbie designed it after dropping a tab of acid. At least the Fiat Renegatto looks better than the 500X, which answers the question “what would snot look like if it were a car?” Also, after 100k miles, no real problems. No one is more surprised than I.
