Commiserations on the impending turning forty. I did that this year and… well I’m getting my first colonoscopy tomorrow, so so with that what you will. As for the Renegade: we got one as a rental during our honeymoon in Sicily in 2019. It was the first time I’d driven abroad, and being from a right-hand driving country, the first time I’d driven wrong (to me) hand drive. I also had conflicting feelings on the car. We had a 2.0 diesel and an automatic, which was good for us considering the wrongness of the side we were driving. I kinda love the look of the car. The space inside was great. I liked the interior. I felt like it was well enough put together. We had CarPlay (my first time using that, too) but it didn’t mean a total absence of buttons. I think it gets that balance right. It was comfortable, felt powerful enough and had good visibility, which is what you need in Sicily. It had been driven only 1,000km when we got the keys, so everything still felt and smelled new and tight and tidy. No, the problem came when driving through the narrow, steep roads to Savoca that the engine threw a check engine light. It unfucked itself a couple of days later, then switched it on again just before we arrived at the airport. The Sixt people didn’t seem to care too much. So I liked the car, but it didn’t seem very good.
First of all, 10/10 video. Secondly, on to the subject of the transmission. This is the exact reason that those "Endangered Species" stickers exist. A real perfect storm of pissing in the party's punch. Let's break it down, one-by-one. -Small displacement engine: Emissions and CAFE regs make tiny engines the way to go. This one is tasked with moving a modern and thus heavy (~3,100 lbs) vehicle. Thus, a turbo has to be introduced to match the engine to the job. Turbos=lag. -Throttle-by-wire: Emissions require the use of throttle-by-wire to prevent rich spikes which would crank emissions, introducing rev-hang and lag. -Clutch delay valve: Because companies don't trust people to understand how to be gentle, they expect people to just dump the clutch. If you try to drive the thing how you're supposed to drive a manual, you'll be stacking, you guessed it, more lag. The result is a manual where you release the clutch slowly, and it still isn't engaged, so you let the rest of the way go. BAM, stalled. Okay, restart. Let's be real gentle this time, and BAM. Still stalled. There isn't enough rotating mass at idle to get this thing going. Let's feed in some throttle, but you didn't account for the rev-hang, and BAM stalled. You have to stack recalibrations on recalibrations. The best cars disappear before you and do as you request without you even thinking about it. You've got to go on an adventure, Nick. An adventure to a time before those regulations caused these problems.
I've got 50 inch jumbotron screen in my Subaru and I definitely miss having a simple dash. Except for Android Auto.. Can't live without it but I definitely want some knobs.
@@PrydeWater901 Exactly what my 2017 Impreza has and it's fucking glorious. And Android Auto mostly works (not sure whether it's just Subaru being flaky, or the fact that I'm using a phone basically the same age as the car)
My mom is still making payments on her White 2.4 9AT. I was driven to school in this thing as a kid before taking the bus made more sense. The buses bench seats were on par if a tad better than all the seats in her Renegade. I regrettably got my license with this thing, and almost got t-boned by oncoming traffic due to how thick the A pillars are. The fact this thing had a manual saddens me- they didn't even try to make it usable. I can imagine offloading with it would involve second guessing and hovering over the e-brake constantly considering how little it took to stall. I would have never driven my last three manual cars if the transmission was setup this way.
This car isnt for 'jeep guys' at all: its for the girl whose dream car was a wrangler, then find out on the test drive that it handles like shit on-road.
I rented one of these for a week. It was comfy and a little nimble on city streets. When I got on it though i could smell the transmission getting too hot. It was the auto
I got youtube premium a while ago because i was blasted with ads about the ford fecalsport claiming its better than the renegade every five goddamn seconds
If you have an iPhone, you can use brave. It has adblock, and lets you play videos with the screen off. UI is a bit crap, but I’d rather deal with a worse UI than pay like $20/mo
I got it because I had had enough of J Lo interrupting me with her Goli ads, especially when listening to "Elysium/Honor Him/Now We Are Free" from Gladiator.
Your 3 tier system reminds me of Zero Punctuation’s Top 5 Best, Worst, and Blandest system of ranking games of the year. What you’re getting at isn’t unheard of, for what it’s worth Roman - the car is okay and that’s okay
From another view point, a jeep branded fiat panda isn't the worst idea. At least in my mind Fiat panda is the reliable(maybe) regular car of humble man, with taller chassis and bigger room and somewhat off-roadable in a compact car. Outside of fiat-chrysler build quality, it's something that can be respected.
The Fiat Panda is such a great car. If Fiat had the balls of selling it to US and Asia it will cause a riot, but no, Italy has to be represented by the worst reliable products corporate can make I guess... you won't get the Panda, here's another Alfa/Maserati SUV that will brick the moment you'll leave the showroom
This is a size bigger than the Panda, same platform as the Fiat 500X. I think the Panda would sell well in the US as a Jeep but disappear without trace as a Fiat.
Owned a 2018 manual for a while. Abarth pieces fit on this engine btw. Actuators, blow off valves, turbo wraps. Alpha 4C coils and plugs! The exhaust can be bolted off after the cats, threw in a turndown tip and wreaked havoc in town. One of the most fun I had in a company lease ;)
“It just does what you expect it to do without much in the way of complaint.” This is how I felt about my folks’ 2018 Compass that they had for a few years. Yes, it would use a quart of oil between oil changes from factory. Yes, it rode a bit rough. But, it was a base model 2.4L automatic with no frills. It was a $20k car at the time. It was a commuter for us all. I drove it my first semester of college and drove it everywhere in the state. It got okay gas mileage for what it was and handled well. I’m totally fine with a Renegade or Compass. They are just cars with nothing to hide and nothing to brag about. They both just exist and say “Here I am. Take care of me and I’ll take care of you.”
I mean, I love my renegade. Same engine and six speed, only differences are mine has the sunroof that lets you basically take off the entire roof, and instead of lowering my suspension I lifted it. Also it has a tow hitch. And before someone says that a tow hitch on something like this is useless, I moved to Florida last year and drove literally halfway across the country pulling a fully loaded uhaul trailer in that renegade. And it did so fantastically, especially given I made the entire 28 hour trip in one go with only stops for gas and to pee.
You forgot the liberty renegade!! I had a 07! She was pretty sick. I put a lift on it and 31s but the 4wd was good and it came with factory wide body and roof lights and hella lights on the front bumper. Better than a base wrangler!
i have a 2017 latitude with the same power train. its not my favorite car, but its been a great car. its done everything ive asked it to do and all it wants in return is routeing maintenance. just about to hit 150k miles and still averaging 31-33mpg on my commute
I had a last second gig six hours away and the production company rented this for me. I had the nicest trim, farthawk, or whatever. That thing was never not overheating and drove just horribly.
When I was a teenager we got a Buick Somerset off of a relative of ours. I saw one parked at the local mechanic’s this morning. I would love to see a regular car review of this absolutely weird car. The things I remember most genuinely about it are the digital displays for EVERYTHING and the odd smell of the very plush interior.
I bought my 2019 Mazda3 with the basic packages just because I really enjoyed that all the major controls were buttons and knobs, yet it still had a decent screen and Apple CarPlay at the same time. This is the level of electronics integration I want in my vehicle...and I say that as someone who has worked in technology for almost 30 years now. I live on the bleeding edge of tech, WHERE IT MAKES SENSE. My car's #$%^ing interior isn't one of them.
@christianhighlights4434 why? It has tripple the gas milage of my old vehicle, a 10 year 100,000 mile warranty, has 4wd, and can tow my trailer. It has everything I need. I already have a sports car for "fun". This vehicle is exactly what I will need for snow storms
@@moonscar119I just hope you planning on someone else doing the oil changes, are ready to replace lug bolts and are ready for the engine to develop head issues and major oil leaks around 100,000 miles. And yikes, your using it to tow?
I rented one and the doors felt so cheap, like I could rip one off by hand. I know that’s probably not true but it didn’t have the heft I would’ve wanted. But it got me around Florida for a week fine I guess
Funny thing is that in eastern Europe it's still will be a "cool-looking" Jeep. *Nico Bellic accent* "Yeah, it's actually a FIAT, but look at this Jeep design and badge! It's like almost having a Wrangler or Cherokee!"
I had a renegade as a rental for almost 6 weeks... I'd never personally buy one just because of the problems it had (like the seat wiring harness if you had to put the seat all the way back and down because your tall making the airbag abs and ess and seatbelt light come on)but man was that thing peppy to drive alot faster than you think it would be and the seats were extremely comfortable and lastly it feels ALOT bigger on the inside than it is
I used to have a '13 Abarth 500 with that engine (but a five speed) and it was not the easiest thing to get used to, but in all fairness, that was coming off of 9 years driving a first gen xB that shifted so light that it was happy to float the gears once I got the hang of rev-matching it
As soon as I heard Roman's voice, I knew this was Race to the Bottom. Whenever I look at these, I'm reminded of a fun-sized girl I worked with whom I thought I was going to get with, just because she owned one of these.
This guy needs to be in every board room so he can roast them. I had a Jeep Patriot. I hated the engine, hated the transmission, but was very happy with how well it handled in the snow. Now I drive a stick shift Mazda 3, and it's very reliable, but in Midwest winters, I really wish I had a decent 4-wheel drive.
It was the off-road trim on the KJ and KK Liberty, with the 3.7L V6 and Command-trac or Selec-Trac depending on the options. I loved mine, and it's the smallest vehicle I've ever owned where I could take a hardhat off while sitting in it, despite the sunroof.
These sold quite well, and I advocated for people to get them because they were just... Good. Not great. But good. Then in 2018 FCA lost their shit, stopped updating them, started increasing prices of all Jeeps and RAMs to cover for their mistakes with Alfa Romeo and Maserati back home, and when the worst event of 2020 happened suddenly there were Jeep Renegades sitting at $32,000 in packs of fifty on dealership lots when most other manufacturers looked like the Mojave Desert with how empty they were. Inventory was up to two hundred days for Renegades at one point, and with the new Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer incoming Stellantis dragged them off the lots with a cane hook and sold them to wholesalers. So suddenly last summer there were a bunch of these 2020 and 2021 models, brand new and unused, showing up in auction houses getting yoinked by used dealers and pumped onto their lots for $15,000. I bet some of them have five grand in mileage from lot ferrying and test drives despite never once being titled.
The drivetrain was also shared with the Dodge Dart. It was a fun and zippy little car. We had the 2.4l, despite one recall on the shifter cable and the coolant plastic T-joint melting; it was a good car.
I’ve never met a single person who liked their Renegade. Most felt like it was too small (obviously). One person had issues with her 3 year old Renegade breaking down. Lol.
You just now hitting 40... Better armor up, cause old age has got you in its sights! I had to buy a Ford Flex just so my spine didn't shatter with every bump in the road! I miss driving something low, fast and sporty to hit the back roads in, but that would hurt just trying. I'm just 41 but I was born with a twisted spine that got worse after 3 rear end hits, the last one put in out of the driving game for good. I was a speed courier for all of my adult life as driving didn't hurt my back, I was doing 400 miles a day for work and then another 100 to 200 miles just taking my girl out riding in the mountains. I LOVED DRIVING! Now it hurts me to get out too much to want to get out.... I have to settle for playing Forza to get my driving fix. (but it isn't even close to the real thing, at least it keeps my reflexes sharp)
I helped my (now ex) girlfriend purchase one at a Honda dealership used when we were intending on purchasing a used CRV that was sold 30 minutes before we got there. It has blown every bulb except for headlights at least once, cooling fan failure, and thermostat failure. Not exactly the most intrusive breaks to happen to vehicles, but I definitely wasn't impressed by the 2018 2.4L renegade.
To understand the Renegade imo you need to understand the wider Marcchiore strategy for Jeep then Stellantis: to redefine The Car around the SUV. Sure, the Compass and Renegade *seem* to fall under the same SUV size category, but they’re fundamentally built around two European car design identities: the city car (Renegade) and the small station wagon (Compass), except “SUV-ified.” It explains their international success where buyers are less sensitive to car size (or rather, prefer their cars under 5m/16ft), and more presentation/interior.
Bought a lightly used, same-spec 2018 and knew it was important to be in on the joke right away when driving a car that looks like Barbie designed it after dropping a tab of acid. At least the Fiat Renegatto looks better than the 500X, which answers the question “what would snot look like if it were a car?” Also, after 100k miles, no real problems. No one is more surprised than I.
The 500X really is ugly. It looks like a Fiat 500 that ate too much cake, gained a double chin and went up three pants sizes. I saw one the other day and had to do a double take because I utterly forgot they existed.
this thing is a sleeper rally car, especially if you've ever taken it off to the dirt. i bet the manual is even better than the auto i drove in the desert.
I was with my uncle for a wedding in utah and he and I got a Jeep renegade for the tental car because it was cheap. The first thing he did was try to adjust the reae view mirror and it just fell off.
holy crap! i didn't know this about the gearbox when i rented one for a drive to the airport. i thought i was going crazy trying to figure out the gearbox!
I feel vindicated by this video, because about seven years ago I had a rent-a-car Renegade (literally from Enterprise) that I put like 700 miles on, and I did genuinely like driving that thing. Maybe the Renegade is like Metallica's "Load" album. It's actually really good, but nobody wants to admit it to their friends. Thumbs up Roman 👍
All I can think of when I hear the word "Renegade" is that cologne brand from Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas that had that great radio commercial. Lady: Sir this is not a bathroom! Man: Oh really? *urinating* Lady: Ugh not on my shoes!
12:50 To let my inner pedant out for a minute, Renegade was also use as a trim level for the first-gen Liberty (KJ), and (according to Wikipedia) as a limited edition trim on the second-gen from 2009-2011. So, technically, only a 4 year sabbatical
I'm an old soul too at 44 yo. I'd rather have a BIG front ashtray, two ashtrays in the back for the kids (*kidding, muck off big tobacco), but something metal in the rear, column shift slushbox, and three passengers couch front seat than a screen 🎉

Two-knob radio, three-knob hvac. The way god intended.
@@PrydeWater901 Exactly what my 2017 Impreza has and it's fucking glorious. And Android Auto mostly works (not sure whether it's just Subaru being flaky, or the fact that I'm using a phone basically the same age as the car)
i live in the italian alps (Muncion), 1 in 3 cars here is a white jeep renegade
Jeep Renegade...the car of OMG ROMAN IS DOING THE SMITHS "ASLEEP" AS THE OUTRO SONG!!! That was a deep cut, Nick. Well done.
Especially since “Renegade” by Styx was RIGHT THERE.
@@marty_mcvader I was actually thinking of using that, but I'm almost positive I already used it for something, even though I can't remember for what.
It's my favorite Smiths song!
This car isnt for 'jeep guys' at all: its for the girl whose dream car was a wrangler, then find out on the test drive that it handles like shit on-road.
Thats my front door neighbor.
Lol this. atleast it doesnt have the worlds worst suspension issues that are found on wranglers.
I got it because I can turn the screen off and keep listening to podcasts. No ads is great too.
If you have an iPhone, you can use brave. It has adblock, and lets you play videos with the screen off. UI is a bit crap, but I’d rather deal with a worse UI than pay like $20/mo
it's 2024, "we make the free version so shitty it forces people to buy our product" is commonplace and it's very silly
I got it because I had had enough of J Lo interrupting me with her Goli ads, especially when listening to "Elysium/Honor Him/Now We Are Free" from Gladiator.

Good thing you editied the video before blowing through that stop sign. @4:34...😂
Your 3 tier system reminds me of Zero Punctuation’s Top 5 Best, Worst, and Blandest system of ranking games of the year. What you’re getting at isn’t unheard of, for what it’s worth Roman - the car is okay and that’s okay
The refining (or revealing?) of Roman's authorial voice has been one of my favorite things about the recent history of this channel.
Hehehehe panda huehuehuehue, its a souped up doblo underneath
The Roman learning to drive stick at 40 in a review car is great
this is unironically a great car with the Diesel engine and awd, even though it's a crossover
Welcome to the world of Italian cars. Have driven them for over 30 years and only once made an exception. Went back as fast as possible 🇮🇹😄
“It just does what you expect it to do without much in the way of complaint.”
This is how I felt about my folks’ 2018 Compass that they had for a few years.
Ohhh yeah I remember those! Did that light bar grow as much rust as it looked like it would? I recall them being a giant blob of plastic
i have a 2017 latitude with the same power train. its not my favorite car, but its been a great car. its done everything ive asked it to do and all it wants in return is routeing maintenance. just about to hit 150k miles and still averaging 31-33mpg on my commute
I had a last second gig six hours away and the production company rented this for me. I had the nicest trim, farthawk, or whatever. That thing was never not overheating and drove just horribly.
Nice review Roman, I'll admit that you are really starting to get your voice for these reviews! Keep up the good work!
2015 Jeep Renegade: The official car of Craig.... RIP craig.
I would never own one (because Chrysler), but I've always like the Renegade. It has personality and it's adorable.
Roman is the stellantis of rcr reviews.
Jeep Renegade: The official car of internally going "but I don't want the guys down at the pickleball court to think I'm not straight"
Looks like the description is for a 1991 Lincoln, but the video is for a Renegade
Oof, my bad! Thanks for the heads up!
@@LimitedTimeRoman It was a great video as usual!
@@jrope3991 Thank you! That genuinely makes my day.
Roman was in his bag on this one!
I literally bought a 2023 last monday. 13 miles on the odometer and "brand new"..... LOVE IT!!! It was a steal
💀💀💀
Hey if you like it who cares.
I pity you brother.
Another Jeep Renegade fun fact: Initially they had an issue where they were able to do a stoppie and lift the rear wheels off the ground.
I rented a renegade for a week, it was the cheapest model on the lot. That said it wasnt terrible.
I rented one and the doors felt so cheap, like I could rip one off by hand. I know that’s probably not true but it didn’t have the heft I would’ve wanted. But it got me around Florida for a week fine I guess
My neighbor had one for a few years then one day it disappeared and reappeared then a little while later left on a flat bed.
That's how I felt about the Kia Soul. Previously experienced a rented Mitsubishi Outlander Sport and I hated it.
I'd never personally buy one just because of the problems it had (like the seat wiring harness if you had to put the seat all the way back and down because your tall making the airbag abs and ess and seatbelt light come on)but man was that thing peppy to drive alot faster than you think it would be and the seats were extremely comfortable and lastly it feels ALOT bigger on the inside than it is
The CarMax 21% interest special
I used to have a '13 Abarth 500 with that engine (but a five speed) and it was not the easiest thing to get used to, but in all fairness, that was coming off of 9 years driving a first gen xB that shifted so light that it was happy to float the gears once I got the hang of rev-matching it
A coworker has one and ever since they had it. There's more glitter in that oil than the 4th of July.
Roman rarely hates cars because he likes the people who share them with him. Nothing wrong with that.
The best part about the Renegade is driving behind one. They rear has "friend shaped car" energy.
You can delete the clutch delay release valve, and make it feel more normal.
I believe there was also a Renegade edition of the Liberty at one point...
It was the off-road trim on the KJ and KK Liberty, with the 3.7L V6 and Command-trac or Selec-Trac depending on the options. I loved mine, and it's the smallest vehicle I've ever owned where I could take a hardhat off while sitting in it, despite the sunroof.
A trails in the sky reference?!?! Didnt expect that tune
Best review yet IMO, hysterical, honest, and informative.
I had a 2016 manual version of this. I sold it for a BMW two series. I miss that jeep a lot.😢
Not crazy about these, but I can’t deny that y’all clawed through the depths to find the single best renegade spec possible 😭
As a fellow member of the Arn Anderson lifestyle club about to turn 30, I feel that already 40 line.
Buddy of mine drove one and said the A pillars are so dangerously thick, he was convinced he would hit a pedestrian within a week if he owned one.
This is the default security vehicle for security guards
We're going to be nostalgic for the FCA years when we get the Renault-based 2029 Jeep Hurgleburgle.
Citroen*
If this didn’t have the Jeep name associated with it, I think it would have been more successful than the scion and the cube
this thing is a sleeper rally car, especially if you've ever taken it off to the dirt. i bet the manual is even better than the auto i drove in the desert.
I was with my uncle for a wedding in utah and he and I got a Jeep renegade for the tental car because it was cheap. The first thing he did was try to adjust the reae view mirror and it just fell off.
Lol the description is completely wrong.
EDIT: fixed now, but next upload is apparently a Lincoln Towncar.
holy crap! i didn't know this about the gearbox when i rented one for a drive to the airport. i thought i was going crazy trying to figure out the gearbox!
...the little Renegade was actually a really good suv and in Trailhawk trim, a very capable offroader.
Best one time use car on the market! I had a almost new one as a rental and in comparison to the Kia Soul S rentals I have had it comes very short.
Jeep renegade, because an Eddie Bauer ad showing a Jeep lifestyle spoke to me 6 years ago. And now I'm apart of that lifestyle and still an idiot.
I wasn’t expecting a parody of Sleep by The Smiths at the end
All I can think of when I hear the word "Renegade" is that cologne brand from Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas that had that great radio commercial.
Lady: Sir this is not a bathroom!
Man: Oh really? *urinating*
Lady: Ugh not on my shoes!
Jeep renegade: The official car of the budget conscious “adventurous” mom who thinks 2 inches of snow is the next Moab.
12:50 To let my inner pedant out for a minute, Renegade was also use as a trim level for the first-gen Liberty (KJ), and (according to Wikipedia) as a limited edition trim on the second-gen from 2009-2011. So, technically, only a 4 year sabbatical
I'm so glad I'm not the only one that had a hard time with a Jeep transmission.
I'm an old soul too at 44 yo. I'd rather have a BIG front ashtray, two ashtrays in the back for the kids (*kidding, muck off big tobacco), but something metal in the rear, column shift slushbox, and three passengers couch front seat than a screen 🎉
