The first version of SIM cards _COMP128v1_ has a ki value that can be calculated by randomly bruteforcing it. Some carriers still use COMP128v1 cards today. Since then COMP128v2 and COMP128v3 came out which store the ki value differently. It's still possible to read in an attack but: There is a limit on how many bruteforce attempts the card will allow before destroying itself. So if you try to read the ki value it may destroy the sim card. Specialists can disect a SIM card's registers and the encrypted parts can be read under a special microscope provided they know where to look - this method is very expensive and labour intensive. The easiest way to access the ki value is if you know someone working at the authentication center of the mobile carrier. The value is stored in their computer software together with your phone number. Once you have access to your ki number the cloning is very easy any of those cheap cloners can do it if you copy the full contents of the source card.
