- Dr. Lukin, alongside Timothy Meyer, LCSW, presents a detailed exploration of EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy in this video. They discuss how this innovative therapeutic modality is effectively used to identify and address past traumatic experiences, offering insights into its mechanisms and benefits.
EMDR therapy is a recognized and powerful approach for those struggling with the aftermath of trauma. It involves the use of eye movements to diminish the emotional impact of disturbing memories. This video provides an in-depth understanding of the principles behind EMDR, its process, and its effectiveness in treating trauma-related disorders, including PTSD.
Timothy Meyer, LCSW, brings his expertise to the table, explaining how EMDR facilitates the accessing and processing of traumatic memories, leading to improved emotional, mental, and physical health. The conversation is rich with examples and practical insights, making it an invaluable resource for both professionals and individuals interested in this field.

For those that may be skeptical, I am currently doing EMDR and have been for 6 months. It has saved my life; literally. I had so much trauma in my life from repeated sexual abuse as a child and then vicarious trauma from over a decade in Law Enforcement. Before EMDR I would have constant thoughts of suicide and would have an extremely short temper. I realized that I never managed my PTSD for all the things I had seen and experienced. I’ll say it again. EMDR saved my life.
I am so happy it was helpful! All the best to you
Someone sent me this video as a possible suggestion to look into... how did you find someone who does this kind of work? Is it a psychologist / therapist? I'm not sure how to hunt something like this down...
RURdy4It I googled EMDR professional in my area and was fortunate enough to find a local company that had plenty of EMDR trained people on staff.
@@javieracosta5528 thank you!
@@RURdy4It Hi there. Please visit www.emdria.org/ to get an EMDR therapist in your area. Warmly,

Dude's upper body just cured my PTSD.
But seriously I cannot recommend EMDR and CBT enough if you suffer from PTSD, OCD or even depression. Helps a LOT.
How many sessions or how long did it take? Thanks
@@Aaron-cy6pu It depends, everyone is different. I can't say I'm fully healed yet but I'm in SUCH a better state than I was a month or two ago tbh
how? like how did you feel? did the flashbacks get better?
@@Vera-dg3hf It allowed me to bring the flashbacks in without getting emotional about them since my visuals were preoccupied...kinda hard to explain. But if you address them and acknowledge them it's almost healing and allows you to do so without being afraid. The tricky part is realizing they're just thoughts at that point that can no longer hurt you and to let them go. Overthinking anything can make the most mundane seem catastrophic.
GoodDaySir good to hear you’re so much better!! Would you recommend for anxiety? Thanks again
I came here to learn more about EMDR, stayed for the muscles and laughed at the comments. Cured!

I had EMDR a few years ago following several sexual assaults. It was just as painful as the literal event, but it saved me. It comepletly stopped the uninvited memories and thoughts that I was constantly bombarded by. It created a safe space in my brain which I can always go back to; it allowed me to move on and grow. And it’s what has inspired me to become a psychologist. I will forever be thankful to the psychologist I had.
I am sorry to hear about your experiences, but glad that EMDR was helpful! Dr. Lukin
I need that right now. It's just been a succession of flashbacks and the horrible feelings that come with it. I'm confounded because I had 15 years of therapy and thought I was okay. Life events have triggered them.
@@LisaMaryification Similarly, day to day events can trigger my trauma. I have been in therapy for almost 1 year, and it has gotten better, but I’m still not done processing everything and I definitely still struggle with intrusive thoughts sometimes. I will definitely talk to my therapist about EMDR to start doing it with her. You should maybe considering doing the same. Remember that we are strong together . All the best
YES.. It is almost as painful as the event and it was a bit scary... I honestly didn't feel like it was working.. but it worried extremely well... That's been almost 10 years ago.

I had EMDR therapy for my trauma and it's crazy how effective it was, I benefited so much from it.

Well said, for goodness sake!!
I did EMDR therapy and it completely changed my life. After years of talk therapy I was changed in less than 3 months.

Just started therapy with EMDR and CBT. WOW! Trauma and events I've been holding onto and blaming myself over for years have all melted away. Yes, the memory is still there but it no longer has control over me or what I do or don't do. I feel lighter than I have in a very long time.
EMDR is helping me connect so many dots from my life experiences. If you have a history of trauma, I'd give it a try.
Glad to hear!
I am using EMDR with my therapist to process all the trauma from losing my husband of 32 years to covid. Two sessions so far and it seems helpful.
💜
I've never actually done EMDR in any of my therapies but I do believe it works. He said that the eye movement or bilateral stimulation helps us process the life event.. but I think it's more like it makes us reprocess in greater detail said life event. Likely when we experienced the problem there was no time to think consciously, there might have also been pain, fear... and we operated on autopilot. Looking back usually that pain or fear is all we see, but by adding another element that wasn't present then (the bilateral stimulation) it stops us from falling into the memory by grounding us in the present. It's the difference in living through a tornado and watching it frame by frame on TV while you have the remote.
that is very accurate!
Really good insight!
Beautiful last sentence. Wow. Thank you very much
Excellent explanation
Mmm auto pilot? Years ago after a horrible experience, I felt like I was on auto pilot for years. Wish I’d known about this years ago.
Currently going through this treatment, and it's like magic. You're just left sitting there like you have no idea what just happened inside you because it actually helps and you don't know what happened. I love that this exists! I think this will be my ticket back to living a normal life after being down and out for almost ten years before finding this treatment.
If you have the opportunity, try it! It's not for everyone, but if it's for you, it is SO worth it!
How was it overall?
I just want to say please make more videos including him...
I love EMDR. this is the best choice I've made in my journey to healing and finding my self. it really is such a life changer. if you are looking to free yourself from traumatic events please consider this.
I really appreciate this interviewer stopping and clarifying what goes down, when the client it to speak and when. I find the process itself of emdr mysterious. Like what am I supposed to be doing? What memory do I start with? Does it have to be from childhood? What if I can’t think of the worst “part of the movie” and when the talking stops will you tell me to shut up? What am I supposed to be thinking about when I “go with that”? I honestly worry I won’t do it right. I’m a facts and information gal. I find my own therapists explanation to be vauge and I am nervous about our first session which is why I’m here. Okay I’m shutting up now.
Jana, your reservations makes sense. You're trying to touch extremely vulnerable memories. We suggest making these concerns explicit to your therapist. You may need some time to build the trust.
Unfortunately I cannot answer all of these questions to the degree of specificity that your therapist can and I encourage you to speak with them in depth about these questions! But, for some answers; you and your therapist will pick which memory to start with, it does not have to be from childhood, if you cannot think of the 'worst' part of the 'movie,' that is no problem- you would then start wherever you can, and when you 'go with it,' that basically means that you are following whatever train of thought you are on. It is hard to describe exactly what happens in regards to each of these questions, however an EMDR trained therapist should know exactly what to do and guide accordingly!
@@lukincenter thanks for that. I think you are right. I’m not sure I do trust him. Emdr has such high praise and can be a game changer so seems, for me personally, to be a serious undertaking and big step. He offered it on our second session and i didn’t feel ready. Another detail was I was told that when recounting the actual memory I would be silent, not verbalizing them... which throws me off, I don’t have the confidence I will be thinking/ doing/ processing without professional guidance. This is a great video and thank you for the comments I really appreciate it.

The book “The Body Keeps The Score” by Bessel van der Kolk talks about treating his patients that brought great results. It sounds almost too good to be true and I realize it isn’t as simple as “moving your eyes around” there’s more involved. But it’s wonderful people are resolving their painful experiences this way!
That book is also great! EMDR is just another way to work through trauma.
Good video to share with clients, thanks!
Thank you!
I reached out to a group today about this. I’ve been in CBT multiple times for multiple things in my life. This is the only thing I know to try now. My depression as anxiety are getting worse. I almost feel like I’m Bipolar. I hope it helps
Did it?
Loved it❤️❤️❤️
I’ve been traumatized by his hawtness 🔥
I do EMDR in conjunction with mantra based meditation and deep breathing. I find this a completely relaxing experience which gives me a levelheadedness and tranquility I haven't found in any other way.
The most important part is making sure the client is comfortable and feels safe enough to dive back into the exact moment that traumatised them.
If the trauma is so strong to the point where replaying it causes more harm than good, then this will never work.
I’m a life coach and I’ve helped clients with trauma, the most important thing is to provide a safe place to explore at a safe pace. 🙏🏾
I used do have to think about it, like really think about the painful moments, and then my therapist would move her fingers side to side and i would follow while thinking about it, and i was one of the first to use the bomb tecnice i think its called, which i did all of the above and i tapped my knees on both sides, always got so tired after it but it was worth it
Works so well

I think my ptsd is 80% gone. I think it reduced tremendously my triggers. Now i still have some triggers but i don’t react to them and let them control me. So that is a good sign. I tried EMDR 23 years ago to help deal with childhood trauma. No success. Not effective at all. To me it seemed like a useless gimmicky therapy tool.
Fast forward 23 years where my therapist tried it on me - totally different reaction! Amazing!
Would anyone care to suggest why it worked on me last week and not 23 yearsago when I was 42 years old, desperately attempting to heal myself?
If the trauma was too painful for you to revisit safely, or if you didn’t feel safe with the therapist, it wouldn’t work. My guess would be that you processed the trauma bit in the meantime and it became safer to fully dive into, and/or you feel safer with your current therapist.
My memory closes it self down with I have trauma I dont know how this will work for me but I'm certainly ready to give it ago. EFT TAPPING has worked wonders for me.

My twin sister just died of cancer in the summer, but on top of it nobody told me. I found her obituary online. So feelings of shame and blame as the scapegoat are reappearing. In addition, I was just diagnosed with cancer also, of an unknown primary. I haven't started treatment yet because they are trying to find out the primary. I'm getting flashbacks of all the traumatic things that have happened in my life. It's like a constant slideshow all day long. I feel so helpless and alone. I am being referred to a psychiatrist at the cancer clinic but need something now. If anyone knows an app or a video that helped them, please let me know!
I am so sorry to hear about your struggles. The best place to find an EMDR therapist is on emdria.org. Just put in your zip code and you should be able to find someone quickly. Hang in there, Dr. Lukin
Sorry to hear that darling. Have you looked into EFT Tapping or Matrix Reimprinting by Karl Dawson? I am getting great results from them. You can even do them yourself without a therapist, especially if you are having flashbacks which I think is helpful because some people can't remember their trauma or scary events.
But first start taking vitamins and minerals to help your brain. High dose EPA (omega 3) + VSL3 probiotics + vitamin B Complex was such a life saver for me. I felt a different person in less than 2 weeks and believe me I was in a state almost psychotic. If you need more info please let me know. Take one day at a time. The real cause of cancer is stress. So don't feed it by staying stressed. Help yourself. Your mind is so powerful that you can heal yourself by the power of your mind. Deny the cancer and focus on anything positive. I found dancing very helpful throughout the lockdown 👍
The Body Keeps The Score says that EMDR is more suited for adult onset trauma...not the stuff imprinted from early childhood. Is that true because Van Der Kolk's research points in that direction. Cheers
Hello Sir! Does it help with Dissociation? Depersonalization to be exact.
Yes, a modified approach can help
What if during the process when they ask how disturbing does it feel, you don't feel it being disturbing or don't know how to number it on the scale of how disturbing it is. Idk if that's numbness on my end or I'm over it, but I do still am affected by it in the present. Any thoughts?
That is something that would be addressed with the therapist and a conversation would happen exploring if there is something "blocking" those feelings, or if there truly are no disturbances associated with the memory anymore.
@@lukincenter I appreciate the insight thanks so much!

Is anyone's brain wired as differently as mine? The side-to-side eye movements do not work for me. But what finally DID work was up-and-down movements.
Anyone else experience this?
Thanks.
Do you wear contacts? I do, and my eyes are really sensitive.. it feels almost like I’m flexing a muscle behind my eyes when moving them back and forth. Up and down movements were easier for me too.
EMDR seems like it's for actual traumatic events (war, rape, abuse, etc.). Can it help with generalized clinical depression, hopelessness, disassociation, and how?
Usually people start with CBT for those issues.
I need this so I can let go.
He's got a nice ches-- I mean top. Top.
Does this work for people with CPTSD? E.g., People who have been suppressed by authorities, abused for long time periods or manipulated in a subtle way and eventually lost a lot in their life? I’m asking because there might not be a specific “traumatic event”, but sure there’s a great sense of hurt, pain, fear and trauma.

I wonder if in our minds, that we are trying to engage both sides of our brain by scanning our eyes from side to side. It would make sense that the body would be calling on all its faculties to solve problems. I often see people scan back and forth not really looking at any thing when in deep thought. I could almost guess at the dialogue between thoughts, connecting the dots from all centers of the brain that hold all categories of experienceses to draw the most clear picture from.
Hi Jen. The neurobiological underpinnings are still being explored, so you may be correct.
@@lukincenter When we can access some things that sensory receptors pick up unconsciously during hypnosis, but not as much when asked to recount, it seems logic in my mind, that there is a lot more to pick from under the surface of the experience. I understand that we wouldnt be able to see the world exactly as it is, else, we would be staring into atoms, vs, objects. It would be like a fish dodging the very water it lives in. Quite a shock it would be if our eyes could see at an atomic level. If we could, I'm guessing we wouldnt find ourselves to be that different. That kind of leaves me to think of what use, the egoic self would serve. Not that it "serves" us now.
What I believe is important too. If our brain decides to get rid of a traumatic memory so we could lead a somewhat normal life, we ort not dredge up the shit and suffer through it again. Life is really about moving on. Going forward, not backwards. P
