I don't care what anyone else says!!!!
You hv explain this to perfection!!!!
If u really want to understand the very basics of scopes , specifically the ones with lots of zoom power U HV TO UNDERSTAND THAT YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO BE SHOOTING LONG DISTANCE SHOTS ALL THE TIME UNLESS YOU HV A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF LAND OR YOU ARE LUCKY TO HAVE A RANGE THAT GIVES YOU THE AVAILABILITY TO DO SO.!!!!
I'M INCREDIBLY GRATEFUL FOR YOUR EXPLANATION

Diamondback Tactical Vortex. There is no doubt that better optics exist, but no wind zeroes in elevation evened out over straight line, elevated or downhill targets. 0 m.o.a. no wind zero at 300 meters, UP 6 m.o.a. at 550 meters, UP 9.25 m.o.a. at 775 meters. Switching to commercial Federal 215 grain Berger with an additional 7.25 m.o.a. for UP 16 m.o.a. The commercial premium ammunition held just over .25 m.o.a. at 775 meters. Neck sized conservative loads from Douglas air gauged 28 inch bull 1:10 twist.

    I started with a 223 farmers rifle, so when I chose a 308, I went with what I knew. So I got a ar-10 .... Have never shot a bolt gun yet.

Is this video one of those new kinds by brail? Oh I'm sure I'd have learned something from it if I had closed my eyes but would that be defeating the video? When I watch a video I like to see something to what you are talking about.

As a sniper, do you prefer ffp or sfp? It seems to me that with an sfp, in some situations, when you zoom in to make the reticle correlate for ranging, that a 72” target (just using average man size target) could at some distances, go outside of the field of vision in the scope. With an ffp, you could zoom until the target is a size you are comfortable with, and the scale of the mil dots would be dead on regardless of magnification.
Am I looking at this correctly, or am I way off?

John here there all good if you have a 1200 to 5000 dollar rifle shooting top accurate shots well than that 2000 to 5000 dollars for scope not bad. But hunting in general out to 300 yrds any caliber 243 to 300 and a good scope of 150 to 300 will work. Seen a video guy shooting Rem 700 22.250 at 500yrds with a Tasco hi power and nailing it. Muzzle loader shot deer 235 yrds I.ve even kill deer with shotgun Sabot bullet to 148 yrds. The thing is know your gun shoot as much as you can. And scope are no different shoot them learn them.

Confirms all my suspicions. What does it matter if you use the second focal plain at full magnification, you can still range effectively with mil dots. I said exactly the same thing to a friend but he was determined to spend $2500 more because he FFP made it better. He is never going to use FFP for its extra abilities anyway. Now he is in huge debt after buying the rifle as well, he can't afford much shooting.

Skip to the 15:00 if you don't want an aneurism. A lot of diagrams explained, in depth, verbally. It really doesn't change the meaning of the 'video': bunch of stuff in the scope moves, placed in different places yada yada yada FIRST FOCAL PLANE RETICLE GETS BIGGER OR SMALLER WHICH CAN BE GOOD OR BAD [reasons], SECOND FOCAL PLANE RETICLE (INVENTED FIRST) STAYS THE SAME SIZE, WHICH CAN BE GOOD OR BAD [more reasons], BUT IT'S CHEAPER. BEGINNERS SHOULD GO WITH A SECOND FOCAL PLANE SCOPE.

I tried a FFP scope and Ill never use one again. They make no sense to me. Everyones excuse as to buying one is "I dont have to worry about what power my scope is on to range targets".
First off I bet that anyone spending money on a FFP scope isnt going anywhere without their laser range finder and NEVER ranges anything with the reticle anyways and second, even if you do range in the reticle you are ALWAYS going to zoom in to get a more accurate reading on size. No one is going to range on low power.
I would MUCH prefer a reticle to be constant size at all ranges.
Guys who buy FFP scopes on low power scopes like 1-4 or 1-6 etc makes even less sense to me. Totally useless. Why would you want a jumbled up smudge of a reticle on 1X on then a regular looking reticle on full power? FFP scopes was just another way for scope makers to tap into the guys wallets that think they HAVE to have whatever the "latest and greatest" is. FFP scopes are totally useless in my opinion
I will NEVER own a FFP scope ever again! ...Anyway thats my rant

That does make a whole lot of sense. You are 100% right about the 1-4 and 1-6x optics, Ive reviewed enough to not be Remotely interesting in getting one in FFP. The whole point of them is to have a large, quick to focus on reticle at 1x and something that can be precise enough at max power. SFP makes the most sense.

It's not just for ranging. As you change the magnification on a SFP, the hash marks or dots will not correlate to 1 MOA or 1MIL if not on the set magnification by the manufacturer (usually max). So if you're using the reticle for drop on a 4-16 and you're set at 10, and you know at 90 yards you should 5.0U MOA, the reticle mark while at 10 will not be 5 hashmarks. It will only be 5 at 16 power. Hope that makes sense.
