If Disney offers them something better they will swap it. The OLC has no attachment to the characters or their history, only their popularity. The thing is, Disney *has* nothing better to swap it with. That is where the friction is coming from. If Bayou Adventure looked like it was going to be a smash hit, they would have swapped already. • @ThemeParkZilver
    @ThemeParkZilver 27 днів тому +13

There is a lot more here than just Disney wants Splash Mountain gone to be considered.
First, unlike in Disneyland where Critter Country is right next to New Orleans Square and Disney World where there is no New Orleans, Tokyo has a different set up. In Tokyo they do have a "New Orleans" though it is technically considered part of Adventureland. (It still looks just like Disneyland's design and contains Pirates of the Caribbean.)
Legend has it, The Princess and the Frog was made with the intention of replacing Splash Mountain from the get go. (Think of how close Tiana's Place was to the restaurant already in the New Orleans at Disneyland.) However, like with Discovery Bay, poor box office lead to the idea being scrapped. The reason this matters is Tiana is inseparable from New Orleans, yet in Tokyo, Critter Country is not adjacent to New Orleans. This would mean a second Bayou area near Fantasyland and Frontierland. It would be wildly out of place. So Disney would not only need to convince the OLC to change the theme of the ride but the entire surrounding area as well. If Disney is footing the bill this is equivalent to paying for an entire mini land. (Not Galaxy's Edge big but still not cheap.)
The next obstacle is the OLC doesn't settle for cheap garbage. They said no to Galaxy's Edge, they said no to Avenger's Campus, they said no to Pandora. Even existing rides like Soarin', Toy Story Mania and Indiana Jones (Along with Splash Mountain as mentioned in the video) have significant upgrades to the original versions. This would mean not only offering Tiana to OLC for free, but creating a better version than the US. (Since there is almost no way the US versions meet the OLC's standards.) So even if they do manage to vanquish Splash Mountain, Disney will have to live with being seen as cheaping out the US versions of the ride. (And since this was all because of a certain incident in 2020, it allows the virtue signal to be even more hollow than it already is.)
Of course, Disney will also have to contend with being seen as a western company imposing their ideals on a foreign nation. (Something that has historically been frowned upon, but recently has seen a resurgence from certain groups of people.)
Now as the OLC, this may not be the worst thing in the world. Yes, park fans might lose Splash Mountain, but Disney sounds as though they are prepared to write a blank check to remove the ride. All the OLC has to do is ask, how much is this worth to you? They could easily turn the area into an extension of Fantasyland and add something for pretty much any IP they want. (Though, they already have Tangled, Frozen, Little Mermaid, Aladdin & Beauty and Beast, there aren't all that many mega hits left to pick from.) Alternatively, they could lean into the success of the Mysterious Island in Tokyo Disney Sea and put in Discovery Bay. (I am half joking, but at the same time...) Japan understands the popularity of steampunk and it would be unique, with a bonus of being next to Frontierland. Not to mention more popular than Tiana will be. They also has a special place for Kingdom Hearts in Japan, which could be a big success both for locals and travelers. Or better yet, since they are not owned by Disney, perhaps they could find a way to get a certain cute blue dog to replace the Brer animals... Just a few ideas I would be thinking about if I was at the OLC and Disney was on it's knees begging. (That's not even considering the bargaining power of lower license fees, longer contracts or other business end benefits.)
Overall I don't think it will happen. Or if it does it won't be a one to one switch to Tiana. (Even if Disney pays.) Some other agreement will be reached that involves something the OLC wants rather than Tiana. (Or perhaps in exchange for and in addition to adding Tiana.)

If Disney's goal is making sure that Tiana's Bayou Disaster isn't put it to shame by whatever Tokyo has, that rules out replacing Tokyo's SM with anything good. Disney basically has to pay OLC to make their park suck just as bad as Disney's parks do, which could be a tough sell, especially with Disney not being flush with cash themselves.

The Japanese love for Splash Mountain is because of their obsession with "kawaii." The Br'er characters don't have the same cultural value to the Japanese, as Americans in terms of their history. But, because they're considered "cute" the Br'er characters are a hundred times more appealing to the Japanese than a princess based IP like The Waitress and the Frog. The Br'er characters were also known to the Japanese through comic books and television. Unlike in the US, where the characters are more strongly associated with the wrongfully demonized film, Song of the South. I don't know the length of OLC's license agreement with Disney Enterprises for the Br'er characters or Splash Mountain, but Disney obviously got back control of the music from Song of the South. It's my hopes that OLC can maintain the rights to the Br'er characters for so long as they maintain the Splash Mountain attraction which requires regular overhauls beyond its usual maintenance. It's at the time of an overhaul when the Walt Disney Company tries selling a retheme. It should be up to Walt Disney Imagineering to offer suggestions on possible rethemes or expansions, but the Walt Disney Company (Bob Iger Corp.) has its agenda to push in an effort to be "good global citizens."

While I am not surprised, as a standing Splash Mountain will remind Disney fans of Iger’s Go Woke, Go Creatively Broke failure. Here are a few points: 1) Based on my understanding, Disney cannot dictate to OLC so it must be incentives-based, 2) OLC cannot take Splash offline until their new Space Mountain is complete, as Tokyo Disney would have major capacity issues if two E-Tickets were down and 3) OLC would only agree to this…if Disney were to give up a fortune (as they are doing domestically in terms of declining brand: Animation, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, 20th Century Studios), by reducing their licensing and / or consulting fees to OLC.

Ok, this is getting out of hand. If Japan is fine with the ride being in their park, then they have the right to keep it. Besides, the reason why they have it over there is because of the little critters from animated parts of the movie. They only care about the animals, and the cultural significance behind it. It’s up to them to decide what they will do with it, but that doesn’t mean pressuring them or forcing them against their will is going to fix anything. It just makes Disney look bad.

Here is what I don't comprehend about this situation. From what I understand Song of the South should be public domain in Japan. According to what I understand of Japanese law, a copyrighted work bearing the name of a corporate body (in this case Disney) enters the public domain 70 years after the making public of the work. Song of The South was released in November 1946, or 77 years ago. I am not a lawyer, but if I understand correctly then Song of the South should be in the public domain in Japan. And in that case, Tokyo Disney should be able to keep selling the merchandise (as long as it matches what is in the movie), using the soundtrack, and keeping Splash Mountain as is.
    Am I missing something here?

Knowing the Japanese community, there's no way most people will be able to appreciate the context and fully enjoy the ride, or at least in the way that Disney intends us to do so. Most of us Japanese don't know the backstory to Splash Mountain but we enjoy it because its been there since our childhood regardless and the ride does well to explain the story in Japanese through the animatronics. Not to mention that a major portion of visitors are high schoolers and university students. It'll just be confusing and nothing more.

i get that the reason they went with Tina as a replacement was probably because it passively could match the theme of the rides layout and alot could be reused , but if you ask me if they really had to replace it (which they didnt ) there were a lot of other projects that maybe could have fit the water ride side of it better.
in some alternate universe maybe we could have gotten the maelstrom back by placing it in splash mountain with updates to the layout .
cause ultimately wasnt that also a beloved ride that people didnt want gone and rather than addresses the repairs needed they just swapped it with a elsa themed attraction ?
it was an epcot ride sure but the parks feel so disjointed with all the ips that i cant say it would be seen as a big deal to just put it where splash mountain is .im not sure how much work would be needed and people probably wouldnt like the changes that would be needed but theyd have been more receptive to that.
theres water sequences in Emperor's new groove , that could have also with some tweaking and maybe pulling from the sequel + show also worked. bam an attraction that fits the water theme, had a broader appeal , and was well liked. you could probably reuse alot of the set up of those old animatronics too and their placement .at least i think so.
i dont think theres too many other options unless they go to tv shows entirely which i doubt theyd do seeing as they barely seem to care for any of their shows new or old . but imagine an amphibia themed ride or something of that nature.
cuz like when i first started visiting the parks in like the 2007-2016 ish era youd always have these pop up attractions themed to different popular shows and character meetups for stuff like Kim Possible and Phineas/Ferb and you use to hear that they "always considered putting in a gravity falls ride " that would have stayed long term but it never seemed to happen . which caught me off guard when compared to some of the older dark rides that had a range between feature film and that weird middle ground of like 22 minute stuff .
one can understand with how hersh speaks why he never probably got a ride for his show . but like Dan Polivmire is still actively making tv shows within the P&F universe for disney and theres actually still demand for all three of those projects. so youd think like maybe something would have come about from that ?
but some of the best shows of the post 2015 era unfortunately got caught in the transition between cable and streaming production and got pretty poor treatment by the company itself . so seeing something like a Molly McGee or Amphibia ride seems less likely anywhere in the park even though i think both of those properties have a real solid potentional to be well received overlays to attractions that are unused space right now .
i guess really what im saying is they had options A LOT of options other than Princess & Frog that could have met a need for that space without destroying/removing a bunch of usable animatronics . whether the ride turns out good or not theyve kinda actively chosen to get rid of props and set pieces that probably will be left somewhere in storage to rot . its giving the same vibes as what happened to ToonTown in Disneyworld.
im neither for or against the removal of a ride for its history im kinda in the middle. the ride needed repair and i think secertly its not even about having an agenda , i truly think like maelstrom they just wanted an excuse to spend a load of money repairing it and decided it be cheaper to just redo the theme entirely . i think the approach they took with making it seem like its replacement is somehow the only solution to the issues , is intentionally misleading people so they dont look at how much money disney parks are losing and how much easier doing this is to try to reduce cost. cuz this is very close to what happened with maelstrom if i recall.

Japan and OLC is not afraid to make changes to its rides. That being said, they will only do so if it's beneficial to them financially. When the movie updates came for Pirates of the Caribbean, they were happy to add those, but they had no obligation to remove the auction scene, the pillaging scene where the men are chasing the women, etc. When Sinbad was badly received by Japanese residents, they were fine with changing it to a lighter tone, and also to add Chandu for merchandising reasons. So they will make changes, but to change a ride like Splash that is so financially beneficial for them to keep is a big ask, and one that I don't think that they would do even if Disney footed the bill.

I’m pretty sure there’s more than 13-17 animatronics, that’s just the number of advanced ones?
We will meet 16 band members during the ride (could they appear a second time all together for the finale?) at least 2-3 Tiana and Louise animatronics, we’ve seen 5 additional film character animatronics, and I would expect Naveen and maybe Big Daddy will also appear in the finale.
So if we say the frog band are just motionless statues, Naveen and Big daddy aren’t in the ride, and we only get two of Tiana and Louise.. That means we have atleast 21 minimum. But on the optimistic side that’s around 45 animatronics possibly more? (obviously not all will be advanced animatronics)
I’m still trying to stay hopeful for the ride and see through light at the end of the tunnel. 🤷‍♂️

Seems like Disney is trying to force compliance for the sake of ideology that is not universally accepted but they feel, should be. The same ppl complain about the US being a bully for their involvement in global wars, as a forcing of US political ideology & other agendas on other nations. The hypocrisy is astounding. Disney has ostracized their own audience in the US, now they want other nations to destroy theirs. I hope that Japan stands firm & does what's best for their Park.

As someone who has ridden on Splash Mountain both in Anaheim and Tokyo Disneyland, I can attest to how popular this ride is to visitors from all over the world. I was even lucky enough to purchase a Laserdisc of Song of the South in a Japanese video store and I was able to view the notorious film itself. Personally, I think everyone should watch it in Japanese, because removing the period dialogue, the true meaning of the film is even more evident. Uncle Remus is more of a wise old grandfather character, giving advice to troubled young boy (Driscoll) while his father is out of the picture. Jimmy's grandmother runs a farm, not a plantation, and it's clear that the movie takes place years after the abolition of slavery. There are disadvantaged white people in the movie as well as poor black children and little Jimmy would rather go play with his poor friends than attend an upscale birthday party his mother throws for him. Jimmy's grandmother never condescends to any of the workers on the farm, and she even shares an important conversation with Old Remus on her front porch. While the movie isn't perfect, the animated sequences are so good that the story being told almost gets in the way, it's still an entertaining film nevertheless, and my son, who is half black, enjoyed the movie as well, just seeing Uncle Remus as a nice old man that told stories. It's sad that a small but noisy group of activists want to convince the world that this film is something that it's not, without even allowing the public to view the film themselves and make their own decisions.
