To this day I am baffled how such dissonant chords sound so nice when everything is put together. The individual components sound unsettling, yet the big picture is quite happy
@@andrewgunawan4502 given how often people well-versed in music theory are surprised when a "dissonant" chord sounds nice (when the whole concept of the term is that they're supposed to sound BAD), i don't really trust music theory people much. your terminology is janky and antiquated
Having good ears is a blessing and a curse. A blessing because you're more sensitive and can pick up on contrasts and nuances in sound most other people can't seem to; a curse because when you're discussing something you're hearing with someone, a lot of the time they don't hear it and even sometimes act like you're hearing something that's not actually there. Good thing I make my music and they don't, lol.
I can't help but say that Sonic the Hedgehog's music composer (Masato Nakamura?) really knows what the bass is about. It gives me thrills when Channel 0 and DAC enters the stage, like the bass is the soul of the song itself, and that's whats so great about 1:31. I am pretty sure he was aware of this when he was writing the first notes. Amazing!
What does DAC stand for in this case? Is it a sampling layer? The only acronym breakdown that comes to my mind related to audio is Digital Audio Converter. And I'm a synth nerd so I'm kind of baffled by the fact that I don't know this.
@@mikeexits yes, the Sega Genesis used two sound chips, one for simple waveforms (PSG channels) for Master System retrocompatibility but could be also used in Genesis games. The second chip was a Yamaha FM one with 6 channels for more complex waveforms. Channel six had a switchable DAC mode to read and playback samples. So that's really it. In this song the DAC was turned on to playback drum samples - that was very usual in Genesis games.
@@vinisasso I see, thanks. So I'm guessing DAC in this case still stands for "Digital Audio Converter" to reference the transmission and conversion process of sample data to audible sound.

Yeah he died for a second but then came back to life
Doctor: (examining patient)

As a kid, there were harmonies from these Sonic instrumentals that only I thought I was hearing. Now this confirms it. These notes are brilliant.
