- A Hands On-Hands Off Music & Technology Experience Exploring the First Electronic Instrument.
The instrument that inspired a new world of sound for music and inspired a new world of technology to make music...with electricity!
Presented using his body's capacitance and electrons by thereminist: Ed Sussman
As someone who's a huge Mars Attacks fan, it's awesome to see the man who actually played the Theremin for Danny Elfman! The score for this film is amazing and it's cool to see someone who was apart of making it come to life!
Thank you very much for your comments!
Regards,
Ed Sussman-Theremin
Thank you, it was fun to do too! Apologize for the tardy reply!
It’s fascinating to see a musician play this instrument. It truly takes practice and skill.
Correct!
(Discovering this three years later. The internet truly renders time irrelevant, doesn't it?)
As a kid from the 60s, I had always associated that "sound" with sci fi movies, and space monsters. And with good reason! As an adult, very happy to see how it all works. Brilliant job! The "Mars Attacks" score would be nothing without the theremin. Loved the performance. Thank you.
Mars Attacks is one of my favorite movies and the opening theme is spot on! So great to see Mr. Sussman playing it live! What skill and control! Bravo!
I wanna know what an orchestra of theramins sound like.
Look up guineas world record for largest theremin ensemble 😊
Probably like an alien abduction
I Give the peformance five *Ack acks* and one disintegration laser shot. ACK ACK ACK ACK ACK!
Thanks, you're too kind!
Such an underrated film. Great video!
Super documentaire...
UA-cam just pointed your channel out to me. The score was always my favorite part of Mars Attacks. This was fantastic to see and hear!
Sorry for the tardy reply. Many thanks!!
I think this is cool and I also love Danny Elfman but that movie legitimately traumatized me because I watched it at 3 years old
I was the same age. Had nightmares for years about those lipless little turds!
I laugh now, but over two decades later I still have the insomnia that came from those nightmares....
As being a huge Danny Elfman(my favorite film composer)fan, this is very awesome. Love how the whole idea is a homage to Bernard Herrmann's(one Elfman's favorite film composer)score to "The Day the Earth Stood Still".
Holy.... that was amazing!! This is the reason why I love "Mars Attacks!", I absolutely love the music of science fiction and every time I hear that instrument it gives me pure joy.
Excellent work. 👏👏👏
Glad you enjoyed it!
This made my day ❤️❤️ I’m gonna get a theremin… I really want to try this
The world's only COVID friendly instrument
That's how I can convince my audience to come up and play the worlds only COVID friendly instrument!
😂😂😂😂
That was BRILLIANT! Thanks for sharing it.
What an interesting musical device.
Amazing, thanks for sharing this. I loved this movie as a kid, led to me falling in love with the 50's sci-fi movies the film was inspired by.
How long do you think his ear had been itching? That was a desperately quick scratch at the end. Would have driven me crazy!
I’ve been trying to figure out for so long what instrument made these sounds. Thank you for this.
Your such a great player.
Thank you!
Ack ack ack ackack ! ("very cool") :D
I need this to freak out my neighbors...
Wooow it's wonderful🤘❤❤❤❤
I read somewhere that Lydia Kavina played the sound track for the movie. That's the most interesting looking theremin I've ever seen! Could it be a Moog Etherwave in a fancy alien plastic shell?
Wait! is Mr. Sussman making any oral sounds that are captured within the soundwaves of the Theramin?
I loved Danny Elfman's band, Oingo Boingo - Nasty Habits being my favorite song - it is worth a listen.
Years ago, I had friends who were renting a house in Silverlake and a brother of Danny Elfman's rented a room in the upstairs and I saw a keyboard, but he was never there when I was there so I didn't get to meet him and tell him how talented his brother is. LOL. The guys said he was really nice and wasn't around a lot, but they did like him. The house was owned by Linda Alvarez' father - she was a newscaster/journalist on the TV news in Los Angeles and she would do a story, and end by saying "This is LINDA ALVAREZ" with a very pronounced Spanish/Mexican? accent. I liked her, I just thought it was funny and wondered if she did a story on me if she would please pronounce my name with a thick Scottish accent. lol. I wonder if there is any connection via Kevin Bacon between myself and Danny Elfman or his brother?
As a kid I know if I was it at night and this sound was present I knew I’d be a goner thanks to the monster
The best!!!
That uuuuuu give me chills!!!
So how do you make tabs for these?
Nice.😊😁👍👍
Well done.
Thank you!
@@edwardsussman-theremin1679 Do you know if the Theremin is being used more today in film music?
@@kpete9219
Composer Justin Hurwitz composed several pieces for the film "First Man". This was a homage to Neil Armstrong who was a Theremin enthusiast. Armstrong brought a cassette recording from a record album called "Music Out of the Moon". Its music incorporated original compositions for orchestra, chorus and Theremin. When Apollo 11 first orbited the moon, Armstrong played a cut from the albumaccomanymentThis
@@edwardsussman-theremin1679 Thank you for the information. I will be finding other music with theremin in it and this will help me. It is fantastic to know it was played in space; how appropriate!
Coolest instrument ever
This theme is iconic as the Batman Theme to me.
How has there not been a Mars Attacks 2??? Crime
Absolutely!!!!!
Nicely done! I'd like to know if it's a theremin in Journey to the far side of the Sun.
I have that DVD
The nostalgia is real
Holy shit - it’s real
Ben 10 vibes over here
I want one
haha! fantastisch ! amazing aboluut amaazing! haha
That is a weird looking Theremin - it looks like a spaceship! Is it a custom build?
Yes it is custom. I designed and sculpted the pattern which was vacuum formed (thermoformed) in plastic.
Bob Moog advised me on technical issues arising from transplanting the circuit board and fittings from its wooden case and having the plastic shell and added wiring included in such a compact area surrounding this Eitherwave theremin. It is very dependable but is starting to show its age audibly.
A slight background audio hiss can be noticed.
BTW this Eitherwave is one the first off the production line approx.1995, serial number 0008!
Thanks for inquiring!
Awesome sound. Can you help me to set up this sound? I have a theremin but the original sound doesn't like yours
Ack ack ack!!!!
I m fan Mars Attack
😍😍😍😍😍
Aliens come to Earth: me
Great performance! One thing though: Having the last name "Sussman" in 2017 must have sucked
interesting

Like put your vertical hand 2inches above horizontal hand 2 inches on the right
I heard him and Eflman were influenced by Eric the Midget
Baba booey
Question. What theremin brand is that?
Ack Ack!
Totally reads Danny Elfman
scary sound
Also my cat's theme song
Isn’t that the men in black song? I think it might’ve been the second one they played it in?
Sergio Alcantara Mars Attacks. Same composer, different movie.
MainBlag Banner are you sure? I remember this song in the beginning of men in black 2 when the alien becomes the half naked chick, right?
It sounds SO familiar. I just can’t pinpoint it. Lol.
@@Sergio-fu7mv The video literally tells you where the song is from and the story behind it. lmao
No it's Mars Attacks but they were written by the same composer, Danny Elfman, so it does sound similar.
And in my opinion a fretless bass was hard thing. LOL
Sounds Like a Woman's Voice. Please Try Star Trek's Theme...The Origins Series!!! 🙏❤😃🎼🎵🎶
Mars is Russian confirmed
