I'm pretty impulsive myself, especially around Christmas -- so I reached out to Rena-fi for tips on how to avoid emotional spending during the holidays.

I saw a violin piece I liked and I own a violin now. There should be a plugin that forces you to answer the questions in the video before it allows you to buy something.
I thought I was the only one who did that... bought my violin over 2 years ago...
Horrible Murky I’ve never done tha... oh, wait a minute, I’ve got an electric violin in my craft room... think I’ve had it for five years, never used it.
Feel you on that. I have a piano, 2 violins, 2 guitars and a friggn glockenspiel.. I only play the piano...
Honestly that is a great idea for a plugin. Developers get on this please!
@@PlasticClouds 15 years ago... 🙄
Unfortunately, I have ADHD AND I'm an advertiser. I'm pro at convincing myself to buy stuff.
That’s low key sad
Me tooooo!
Don’t say unfortunately there is nothing wrong with having it I have it
Hey as long as you are able to pay your bills and meet financial goals; nothing wrong with that.
HAHAHAHA
Yes to all of the above. The Guilt of not being productive enough can push me to buy things to get the false sense of accomplishment.
WOAH - Now THAT is some amazing self realization!!! VERY impressive!! 🏅🏆
^ THIS ^
Bingo and that’s where I am, I gotta do better
"We might think managing our finances is about managing our bank account, but really it's about managing our emotions."
“A *bit* time-blind” she says. As if I didn’t take a 25 minute shower because I got distracted having a conversation with myself. 😬😅
Great video, thank you! Very helpful!
me, 30 minutes into my shower, having an epiphany, talking to myself and drawing a graph on the tiles with my finger : oops no more hot water, I'm freezing. how am I gonna rince this shampoo out of my hair now ?
The shower is my favorite place to have new ideas and tidy my thoughts.
@Kaitlin Fleet That's my life right there
Kaitlin Fleet same also sometimes I say ok imma take a short shower and just end up taking a longer one
@@karinah4587 Drawing on the tiles..I write something and feel like a scientist 😂😂😂
Fr, when I'm not excited by a new routine, I take can take an hour because I'm going over scenarios in my head- the struggle is real
I just finished buying something and I saw this in my feed...
nooooo I'm too laaaate
I felt that haha
@@HowtoADHD perfect timing here: was browsing eBay for laptops (because I'm not feeling well)
Ooo you're bad 😂

"Before you check out, check in." Literally love this! I use the "24 hours in the cart" rule on *almost* everything. I also try to avoid physical stores because if I have to plan to come back to the store later, I'll end up convincing myself "I need it now, and I don't have time to come back for it later." Honestly so glad there are things that work!
The impulsivity has wrecked my finances a few times... like a lot of few times.. lol
Yep, I knew the issue to well.
For like the past decade, impulsivity was a form-changing monster, so I couldn’t figure out what exactly was happening, but kept getting ramification after ramification. It literally took me about a decade to turn around and see the path of destruction behind me. Lol it’s funny and not funny. :)
Happened to me on several occasions. I am hoping to keep my finances in order from now on.
This year I managed to save money for my kids presents and spent what I actually had instead of adding debt to my credit card and it feels really good :D
I don’t own a credit card for this reason only a debit card so I can only spend my own money
Emotions that cause me to either eat or buy stuff (non-exhaustive): Stress, Anger, Fear, Sadness, Happiness, Boredom, Depressed, Overwhelmed, Underwhelmed, asleep.... Anyone else's list look similar?
Well at least you’re not using hard elicit drugs
Same omg
Advertisements are so good nowadays. They show you something that you never knew you needed!!
you're not wrong
Jessica, I was recently diagnosed with ADHD As an adult. And I'm struggling trying to understand it fully and how to control it.
Your video have made me cry because you have all the right words that finally explains how my brain is functioning and I was able to show my mum so she could understand too and we have a lot less fights now that we are slowly getting on the same page. Thank you so much for these videos. I rewatch them all the time (because, ya know, getting distracted easily 😹)
Also, you look so pretty and youthful, omg! when I found your videos I was thought you may of been from 15-18 years old until I watched your Ted talk and I was like "wait, what!?"
Jessica has helped so many folks, myself and my husband included. I'm so glad you found her and I wish you luck on the journey.
Congratulations. ADHD is a blessing. You feel emotions more than others meaning your alot more giving, understanding committed amongst many other wonderfull things. Try focus of these positives.
Yes theres challenges some you can over come others not.
But dont give up on these nots with adhd you have to try different ways to do something. For example you may have found it diffcult to do somthing cause you couldnt do it the way you was taught so you gave up as you was told thats the right way.
Wrong others may find your ways odd, complicated or time consuming but thats how u do it and thats ok.
It can be hard for family members there dealing with this new news just like you are they are having to learn different ways to make you happy and your life easier it can get frustrating. But remember that person isnt walking away. Just like u cant walk away from adhd.
Dont overwhelm your self with the list. The one that state all that you a person with adhd now have and now struggle to do or cant do. This will make you feel a burden and negatively about your adhd.
You can live life to the full.
And by accepting your adhd and these new awsome characteristics, you can put them to good use. You may never have been satified with you job never felt good enough at something. But in time youll notice your traits and then youll look for jobs and youll found one. Also a job isnt for life. And adhd people get bored. So either find a job were you have many opportunities and are not doing the same thing day in day out or jump from job to job. Theres nothing wrong with being indecisive as long as your not effecting those around you
Congrats again
I am sending over a big hug to you, Ashton!
Isn't it great when some explains so clearly, something about your own experience that it feels like they possibly know YOU (or possibly have been following you around without you noticing, lol)!? I find it is especially helpful when it has been hard to describe my feelings and experiences, using my own words.
I'm so glad that you found, enjoy and are sharing these videos with family! ...& Yep... navigating adult adhd can be frustrating at times, for sure. Hang in there...it can get better!
Ps- I re-watch my fave "How-To-ADHD" videos frequently too! 🤗🥰👊
❤#welcome to our community!❤
Very true she's amazing 🌹
Just arrived at the same place you are/were in this comment, glad you have the information to help manage your life better
I feel so silly singing that song but I know it's going to help. Thank you for all of your hard work.
I felt silly singing it too but yeahhh...it's the song I needed stuck in my head too lol
Love the songs and there inspiring messages
@@HowtoADHDYou might have felt silly singing it, but you have a beautiful singing voice. It’s light and sweet and lyrical-very pleasant to listen to. Lovely!
Information I wish I had had 15-20 years ago. Then again, I wish I had known about having ADHD in my teens or 20's instead of my 30's. Thanks for the video Jessica, much appreciated! Much love from Finland!
Or 40s.
omg, this explains the brain in my life. cheers Jess.
I DIY sponge toffee/hokey pokey/honeycomb every year. So much yum, so quick, so cheap. $32 for all ingredients plus a thermometer, bags, and ribbon.
ooo what? how? recipe!!
@@HowtoADHD I use Christine Cushing's Sponge Toffee Recipe. If you're Canadian, buy the No Name Corn Syrup. Every recipe is like $1.10-2.50 worth of ingredients, depending on your vanilla and corn syrup.
That’s why when I go shopping, I use cash it limits me then I’m forced to pro and con my stuff. (My impulsive spending is normally in a store where I’m confronted with items I can have now.)
MushroomReaper that’s actually a great idea!
icecream lover thank you! :D
"Before you check out, check in!"
Suuuper catchy, and I can see myself repeating that/remembering it.
Love the videos!!
I still have a blender I bought a a year ago, unopened in the box. Give me a fair bid! 😂
Ooo, blender!
NO NO BAD BRAIN
... um... what kind of blender?
I bought wine glasses when they were on sale and I very rarely drink lol
Trade you my airbrush!
OMFGTHANKYOUFORTHEJINGLE this is going to replace the baby shark constantly on repeat in my head and actually be helpful! Do-do-do-do-doo!
I have a "Amazon" problem. Maxed out my credit card 😫😮
Don't defroest your wallet.
Delete your credit card from your Amazon and other online accounts. Make it more difficult to buy. I had to do this with Etsy, Amazon and Ebay. It works. Gives your mind a mental pause to rethink and reevaluate if you really need something. Go back a day or two days later and you'll likely see that you don't need it what you were about to buy.
Mrdigital i would love to help you out, but i did the same thing on steam(gaming platform(not gambling))
First Name Last Name that will probably help
Another reason to pause before an Amazon purchase ... ethics. I have ADHD and my ethics over my veganism for more than two decades are quite strong. Harness your ADHD power of morals and ethics (perfectionism others might say) to rationalize Amazon purchases. ;D
I just watched this UA-cam suggested video after my earlier comment and now feel like boycotting Amazon due to their lack of ethics - also sick of their webpages showing up first whenever I google something as if there's no other venue for online shopping: "Investigation raises alarm about handling of worker fatality at Indiana Amazon facility" from PBS NewsHour, ua-cam.com/video/SU0v2fz0F8g/v-deo.html.
*Edited to replace the word "harvest" which I used earlier with the word "harness," which is the word I intended to type.
I’m getting better at planning my DIY presents in advance so I can pace myself, which means I can actually enjoy the holiday atmosphere. Almost done with my scarves!
Hahaha I literally bought those antlers a week ago and wore them last night 😂 why are your videos so relatable
Yeah....I bought an apartment......while I live in a different apartment......oops
omg what? how?
@@HowtoADHD yeah so about impulsive and emotional spending..... I've had a very rough few months emotionally and wanted to start over.....so I am.....Saturday. I still am on a lease at one place but move into a new place Saturday.
@@sarahsoergel8795 lol I almost done the same thing I did not put my two months in till late and I almost owned two flats at the same time because one I wanted was a better and I liked the price and my parents stopped me now I will own two flats for one month as the one I move out of the second month is "free" as I paid first and last when I moved in. I did not want to start over as much move on as this new place has better job opportunities
I really hope this'll help save my holiday budget - I always end up with too many small impulse purchases, that quickly add up (because I HAVE to go shopping multiple times to get the stuff I need for the holidays).
My impulsivity gets *notably* worse when stressed - which is hard thing to avoid when having to make a lot of decisions under time pressure, while bombarded with infinite stimuli and distractions everywhere!
On top of *the* *overwhelm* comes that dastardly perfectionism and overly-ambitious internal DIY-devil (as well as a general feeling the pressure from participating in family gatherings), leaving me with *that* feeling of failure, because I can't possibly live up to my own (unreasonably high) expectations.
This video makes me feel less alone, thank you - I really needed that more than I realized.
And to all of the brains out there, sharing the struggle: remember to care for yourself, so you don't feel like drowning in holiday preparations. You deserve to enjoy this time of year, even if it means lowering your expectations or receiving outside help!
We are the same person lmao!
I have begun bringing my budget planner with me and writing down the thing and price and category of every single thing I put in my cart
I (should)set a recurring five minute timer and read it over when it goes off
This explains my brain ALL YEAR LONG. I am a *champion* impulse buyer which causes a lot of conflict between my mom and I. I’ll have to give these tips a try!
Write down your long term goals every morning it helps you focus your purchases
Like we are twins. My kids know I had a bad day when I buy them something expensive. Or they see me on ebay just browsing. keep up the great work!
I am so using this song when shopping with my kids!
staring at my wall full of anime merch I bought during a time that was emotionally exhausting...
o o p s
but srsly ever since I set a goal on something to save up (for me it's a vacation!) I have this weird stopper that goes NO THINK OF THE VACATION U CAN BUY STUFF THERE and it helped me go thru the last months 😂
omg I felt this in my SOUL, I impulsively spent so much money on anime figures it is ridiculous.
I impulsively buy comic and anime figures... lol
I just found these videos. They have been such a help for both myself and my son who is 8 and having a hard time learning to deal with his adhd brain. Thank you so much
love your jingle at the end!!!!!
aw thanks! :D
Omg the crafting spoke to me!! I’ve got to finish knitting these stuffed animals before Christmas!!
I started to think about what I make in an hour and what the thing costs I want and then ask myself "is the item worth the time I had to work for it?" that helps sometimes
I did my impulse spending pre-holiday and now I'm limited to super low budget christmas shopping. The struggle is real 😬😬😬
How to ADHD, great jingle. I always check in before I check out. Especially before I even walk into the store. I have made it a habit to ask 3 questions about "wanted" item: 1. 'Need' or 'want'? 2. Is the money in my budget? 3. Will I still want it in 24 hours? If unsure, take picture and wait.
During holidays, I ask a 4th question: Is it on my wish list? If yes, wait and see if it is gotten as a gift.
Biggest cost saver step I ever took was to create a "To Buy?" folder in my bookmarks, Instagram collections, etc. If I really want/need the thing later, I know where to find it. Every now and then I go through their contents and I'm amazed by the number of things I wind up throwing out.
I have never listened to anything harder than this jingle 😅
I haven't been doing well and, everytime me and my mom have a fight, I see myself buying a new thing I don't actually need
There is one more thing to add to your holiday budget: travel cost! If you visit family that do not live in the same place as you do, you need to pay for flight or train or gas - and it may be quite a number. Also, it's good to buy in advance, as the tickets to the flights or trains you want to take sold out and you end up spending even more on alternatives.
I'd love a video on how to manage ADHD if (for whatever reason) you physically can't go on meds. I can't, and it makes some tips lots harder to follow 😿
I watched the video and got a call about a new electricity provider and I was able to make it short and saying no!!! OMG!! perfect timing!!! Thank you Jessica! :)
♥️♥️♥️Totally love it that you made a jingle for this. It's stuck in my head, on repeat. This might just save my holiday shopping from getting out of control this year!!!
Jingle the bell! Happy holidays girl. Thank you for making, sharing and generally being awesome. ❤️
Such great tips here. JESS, You are a blessing to this community. Hope you are doing well and have a Merry Christmas!
As usual, incredibly relevant. Thank you, Jessica ❤️
This is so good, every video is just what I need at the right time
I just want you to know that I've just found your channel a few weeks ago and already it's made a real difference in my life. Thank you for the effort you've put in.
I'm so happy you uploaded this now! :D
That's the thing. Stay out or off the thing that holds, all the things.
Jessica! I discovered your videos just a few weeks ago. Learning How my ADD brain works is changing my life for the better! Thank you!
I always feel so confident after watching your videos.

I needed this right now. I'm going shopping Saturday and was so afraid I was going to be impulsive, but now I will remember to check in before I check out. Thank you! ❤
Love your jingle and probably won't forget to CHECK IN. How cool that you found this outlet and watching you on UA-cam is not only helpful but rewarding. Cream of creativity and intelligently referenced facts of science. Gotta lova ya and wish you could be my friend or therapist
I just discovered this channel and it’s like a whole new world is opening to me!!!
Thank you for the video. We love you. Merry Christmas and happy New Year.
Why is there no heart emoji on UA-cam?
Had to write it here.
Love all your videos, Thank you for making them 💚
Thank you for this! That jingle will live in my head rent free!
this. is. so me!!! Online spending has become a real thing for me! THanks FOR THIS VIDEO!
Your videos are *so* awesome!
They really helped people I know understanding all the quirks I have, and are so helpful and full of tips!
Your creativity is contagious...:D
The ADHD holiday survival guide workbook has the word “financial” spelled as “finacial” and I can’t think about anything else now.
You are so awesome, girl! Thank you! :)
I can't tell you how much your videos speak to me. Thank you so much for being here.
I know for myself that I don't have a lot of money at the moment, but what I do like to do is bake. So usually if I go to a special dinner, I usually end up bringing a homemade apple pie as my contribution to dinner. Also, our family looks at the importance of just being together over gifts, especially since the kids are older.
Great video. and awesome jingle.
You have such a lovely singing voice! Thank you for this video. I sent it to the Brain in my life so she can also learn about mindful spending. Great tips!❤️🥰
"watch the rest of the video first then go look" LOL YOU GOT ME! I was just opening the link in a new tab when you said that :'D
It's really funny, these videos are sooooo insightful, but my mind is always like, surely you don't have a video for this one very specific aspect of having ADHD and low impulse control. And then boom......a video title for that specific issue. Mind blown over and over again, stop being so helpful and relatable! 💕(Plz don't stop)
You are the best person online. Thanks for your channel, I only got diagnosed at 39 and wish I was earlier.
Love it! Made me chuckle but so true. AND you have a great voice😊
That jingle MADE MY LIFE!! I love it
Oh my. You caught me! I have figured out it is not cheaper to DIY (cosplay is so expensive!) but I make lists on Amazon constantly just to avoid impulse buying.
Man I live your content. And that song helps alot.
I love that her videos are long enough to get the idea out and across. But not so long that ADHD brains can function through all of the video.
Thank you so much for doing what I was planning to do-peer support for people with ADHD. I struggled with all the symptoms for (all my life) 43 years, taught myself a new language, earned a master's degree, lost all mt life savings and realized myself what was finally the problem! Now I know one place to go to give and receive support. BRAVO!
Thank you so much for this I relate to this on such a high level 😭💜
You have the most soothing and sweet singing voice 💗
I LOVE THIS. THANK YOU
my dad has this problem and it causes my mom a lot of stress :( he'll buy things we really don't need but he convinces himself that they're useful but in the end they're usually completely unnecessary and even cheap things that he overpays for. It's frustrating to see how that affects my mom and my dad as well. There have been times where we couldn't pay the rent because my dad overspent on something we didn't need in the first place.
Family therapy, and maybe an adhd friendly system.
that song is super catchy! Thanks for the video!! :) Merry Christmas/ Happy Holidays everyone!
love the song at the end! This video saved me a lot of money too.
Loved the jingle!! So awesome. I'll be singing that today
Oh man. The 24 hour rule works great. For me, it's easy to brush off my better judgement's ideas in the moment
This is me a 100% i mostly do it with food I have money but I sometimes regret it and feel dumb. Thank you for making this Jessica.
The psa immediately after the merch promo was brilliant. Thanks for that!
Lovely jingle
OMG I'm so glad I was slacking off on UA-cam this morning, cuz I was literally about to go out Christmas shopping and half the stuff I wanna get is for not planned out DIY gifts specifically to same money xD so I'ma watch this again now and sit down with a pen and paper to do a budget and a shopping list; also gonna need to memorize that song before I go out the door xD
Thank you!!!!
Hi Jess today I just talked to my mum about why i'm struggling and why it might be adhd and guess what she was thinking the same thing too so now my mum is going to book a consultation with my GP and then see where we go from there the video that really helped me talk to my mum was the one where you talked about how to approach your parents and without that video i don't think i could have talked to her so thank you thanks for everything ❤️
Also very helpful and good jingle to remind me to actually think about stuff before i buy it
This explains so much! Thank you so much
Thank you for the video Jessica!! All these tips are super helpful! And gosh that jingle is and has been stuck in my head lol
This video just saved me $200. Thanks! Your catchy jingle is a lifesaver. :)
This video was made for me. Thank you
Amazing jingle! So useful
Always helpful videos to me thank you very much
You're super sweet and helpful. Thank you!
Thank you so much this was so helpful!!!
Thanks for sharing! This video is great :)
Disney is my weakness when it comes to overspending. I went to D23 (Comic-Con of Disney) this year and spent way too much. Of course it didn't help that was my first time in California and Disneyland 😁😂
I'll have the jingle in my head for days to come!! Haha, I like the questions to ask yourself (or your ADHD partner) before buying things. My brain-partner asks me pretty much daily if he can buy something and all I do is roll my eyes and say "If you need it..." but that's probably not the best approach. I'll try to do better and instead support him with the questions you mentioned :) Thanks as always!! Awesome video!!
