- Drive on China's National Highway 318 to Lhasa, the largest city in Tibet, 4K
Starting point: Linzhi City, Tibet Autonomous Region, China
End point: Lhasa, Tibet Autonomous Region, China
Driving on National Highway 318 from Linzhi to Lhasa usually takes 6 to 7 hours of driving time. However, for those tourists who pursue efficiency and speed (except for those who hike and ride), they often choose the more convenient Linzhi-Lhasa Expressway (part of G4218 Yaye Expressway), which is almost parallel to National Highway 318 and can significantly shorten the driving time to 4 to 5 hours.
Although the Lin-La Expressway is faster and safer and also offers charming scenery along the way, I decided to continue along National Highway 318 to Lhasa. This choice was not due to neglect of time, but due to a deep yearning for the unique charm of this Sichuan-Tibet line of National Highway 318.
Along the way, National Highway 318 presents a series of breathtaking natural paintings, with towering snow-capped mountains, deep canyons, vast grasslands, and mirror-like lakes. Each place is a masterpiece carefully carved by nature. More importantly, this route gave me the opportunity to get close to Tibetan villages and experience the simple folk customs and profound cultural heritage that are hard to see on the highway.
Therefore, although the Linla Expressway provides a faster way to travel, I still firmly believe that the journey to Lhasa along National Highway 318 will be more enriching and memorable. This journey is not only an exploration of natural scenery, but also a greater experience of Tibetan culture.
Lhasa, an ancient city known as the "Sunlight City", is located in the heart of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and is famous for its unique geographical location, long history and culture, and magnificent natural scenery. As the capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region, Lhasa is not only the center of politics, economy, and culture, but also a holy place of Tibetan Buddhism, attracting countless believers and tourists to come for pilgrimage and sightseeing.
Here, the Potala Palace stands tall, and with its magnificent architectural style and profound cultural heritage, it has become a symbol of Lhasa and even Tibet. The palace is built on the mountain, and the red and white exterior walls shine in the sun, as if telling a thousand-year story. Every year, tens of thousands of pilgrims walk along the winding prayer path, holding prayer wheels and chanting scriptures, slowly moving around the Potala Palace, praying for peace and well-being.
In addition to the Potala Palace, there are many other attractions worth visiting in Lhasa. The Jokhang Temple is filled with incense, believers kowtow devoutly, and the air is filled with the smell of butter and Tibetan incense; Barkhor Street is bustling, with shops on both sides of the street selling various Tibetan handicrafts and special foods, which makes people linger. Here, you can feel the strong Tibetan cultural atmosphere and experience a unique plateau life.
In addition, the natural scenery of Lhasa is equally intoxicating. Under the blue sky and white clouds, the Lhasa River Valley surrounded by mountains is like a beautiful painting, and the clear Lhasa River flows through, nourishing this magical land. In spring, all things come back to life and peach blossoms are in full bloom; in summer, the grass is green and there are herds of cattle and sheep; in autumn, the forests are dyed with colors; in winter, it is covered with silver and is particularly enchanting. Each season has its own unique charm, attracting people to explore.
In short, Lhasa is a charming city with profound cultural heritage and charming natural scenery. Whether you are a believer or a tourist, you can find your own tranquility and beauty here.

I love China
Yes, Tibetan houses can be seen everywhere in Tibet, and people also wear Tibetan costumes, making Tibet the most ethnic autonomous region in China.
If you have ever considered adding a map of the whole route, after the highlights at the beginning. That shows not just the starting point on the map, but highlights the entire route of trip. You could include how many kilometers traveled or other locations you pass through on the way. I sometimes watch train videos, that show the elevations as well. Thank you for the wonderful videos!

Did you choose not to take the expressway in order to take a video? Expressways in Tibet are free, but the scenery on the national highway is indeed more beautiful!
Yes, follow National Highway 318 all the way to Lhasa.
Didn't know Lhasa have a big shopping mall and mcdonalds lol. Maybe a metro subway and some tall buildings in the future?
i read somewhere that building a subway system is very hard due to rocky soil of tibet....maybe elevated metro is better option
There are tall buildings in Lhasa. This video mainly filmed the route of driving from Nyingchi to Lhasa on the 318 Highway. Therefore, it didn’t show much of Lhasa.
There won't be a metro as the city itself is quite small and without much traffic jam, another thing is that in China you need to have a certain population level and gdp to be qualified to build a metro.
I wanna see driving around the Qinghai lake….

Great views of Tibet under chines "occupation". Very nice to see, how "occupational" authorities of China investing in development and wellbeing of Tibet.
Wow…not much of a shoulder along the highway to pull over in case you have car trouble…
