As someone who has previously worked in China, it brought tears to my eyes. I love the Chinese people, and the children are so special. I hope that more people can be touched to go help them. Too much of what we hear about China focuses on the politics, but as a people, they are very special. If we help them, they can help the world. Chinese people are some of the hardest working people I know, and friendly.
without the help of the government, this would not be possible. unlike the US, the Chinese government are the people that work for the people. democracy is a farce hijacked by special interest.
Thank you, Director Takeuchi! This is my very first comment on youtube since I first visited youtube back to 14 or 15 years ago. I am more than honored to leave my very first comment for this documentary. This documentary was simple but so touching and I truly believe it would help more people to get to know China from a small angle but more naturally. For a 40 years old Chinese like myself who actually experienced the whole development journey of reform and open, I recalled my childhood when I was watching. I am lucky enough to be born in a small village near Suzhou, and we started poor (1980ish, still better than the life in the video), but got better and better every year, and education brought us to a never imagined path. I end up living in Beijing and Shanghai, visited more than 20 countries, got to know the world much better. I simply believe the families and kids in the video, in the Daliang mountain they will have a much brighter future eventually, with the help from people like the teachers, Takeuchi san, Javier, and the Party and the Chinese Government. There will be teachers, doctors, soccer stars, entrepreneurs who will rise from those kids in the mountain. They just come later but they will get there! --------- PS. I happened to visit Daliang mountain a month ago during the national holiday, people there are reall simple and happy :)
People like you, is also what IS wrong with China too. Cos you did not stay... if you stayed in a single place... and not move, then you would not know that.. China went wrong, because... Other countries were NOT as involved either. Many places across the world, were once upon a time... built... slowly, but surely.... Cos people inside China is always greedy, and you never stayed to build something over time ? So you assume that, what you SEE, is what WAS and what WENT ON.... and you have a feeling of "fear of being left behind"... So you keep challenging yourself... This was Mao's situation too. Cos he only lived in a village, he was not satisfied with his life. So he took control.. and helped ruin MORE people, alongside him. I said to a chinese student today.. just this week.. in the UK. I said... "Did you know that, just in 1998, I used many of my savings... for like 10-20 years.... to buy my first mobile phone ? That phone costed me around a whopping 200 pound. 1 pound, was around a whopping 15 HK dollars, at that time. And 1 HK dollar, was around 100 yuan. So my mobile phone.. was around a whopping 200 x 15 x 100 = 300,000 YUAN at THAT TIME !!!!!! So yeh, the WEST, "raised" the entire China from poverty, cos everything was MADE from China.. and people keep thinking that this would NEVER stop ????!!! You guys can know where to go !
Totally didn't expect to finish this in one sitting but I did, this was such a beautifully shot documentary, and I want to thank Director Takeuchi and his team, and of course the volunteer teachers for making the journey to allow us a peek into their lives. Often times, jaded city people romanticise and fetishize life in the country, we see it as a purer way of living and being more connected to nature, but sometimes, conditions are so tough. And even though to more liberal sensibilities (especially in the west) would frown at the prospect of having minorities assimilate and adopting the culture and language of the majority, we see that the villagers understand that in order to obtain a better life, I was touched by how the parents who were interviewed understood how important it is to be educated in the way of city people and being learned. The Chinese government is almost always negatively portrayed in Western media, but in this documentary, I saw nothing but a government determined to reach out to the poorest and hard to access areas in China (the 70 year old grandma accepting Alipay, omg), free housing, providing electricity to those living high up so they don't cut down trees to protect the environment, sure, more can always be done, but through the volunteer teachers, I saw patriotic and young Chinese people reaching out to the less privileged, and I think as long as the people are united and determined to help each other out, China will get stronger and stronger. Also, kudos to the volunteer teachers helping in poverty alleviation. You guys and girls are the real MVP.
I really hate westerners who fetishise poverty and backwardness of other cultures while they themselves live with all the modern comforts. Who do such westerners think they are to speak on behalf of others, why do they assume poor people in other cultures have no agency of their own, have no aspiration or desire to live a better life. The west doesn’t even care about the poor people in their own country, neither do they help the poor countries in Africa or Asia to generate meaningful growth, uplift their conditions and generate employment, all they do is send money in the form of Aid once in a while. But they point fingers at China accusing China of ulterior motives when China builds roads, school and other basic infrastructure desperately needed by those countries.

I am from India originally and now live in US for last 25 years. I am touched by the lady in blue dress who welcomed the teachers to her house with such love, respect and joy. It says so much about the society and the people. In India the tradition to respect teachers (Guru) is very high - such similarity amazes me. The location is beyond beautiful and kudos to the Director for filming this beautiful and insightful documentary.
Respect for teachers has been around since the dawn of civilisation. Greece, Italy, Middle East, Iran, India, China and other countries has recrods of cultural tradisions appreciating teachers. God bless them! Among the pillar of society!

The poorest people are really the most generous. That guy in the train just gave him grapes even though he barely had any money. Really warms the heart.
feel bad to eat the meat, that could not have been cheap, it month of work to raise those animal... you can see how important the teacher meant to the family for them to offer meat.
They really are. There was a local farmer trying to go across the US/Canada border with a trailer full of berries. Unfortunately the border was closed for whatever reason so his berries were going to spoil under the hot sun. He offered to give me a crate full of his berries for free because of this. I out right refused to take it for free and tried to offer him some money but he kept refusing the money and tried giving it away for free. I eventually haggled him into giving him $50 so he could at least have some gas on the way back.
This made me cry. I hope more people will be able to watch this and find ways to help these kids achieve their dreams. As a teacher, my heart bleeds for kids, not just in China but all over the world especially in developing countries like mine, who are not given access to quality education. Thank you for this documentary.
All the children interviewed in Liangshi never once wanted anything for themselves if they had money - each and every child said they wanted something for their parents, or a real soccer field or a larger farm for their school. It was very heart warming and touching And the beautiful mother who was eternally grateful for the volunteer teachers, that also spoke to me deeply.
Service to parents/elders is ingrained for better or for worse into Chinese culture. This is coming from a second gen Asian American. Vastly different circumstances, but the exact same attitude is pervasive here.

So true, this felt like watching a movie, so touching and yet so informative at the same time. Hope more help gets there :).
Well said
I want to hug you my friend for saying these heart felt words.
