  • Here's a quick clip from Navy SEALs Coch and Gordo's Combat Pistol 1 class.
Here, Myles is taught how to move and shoot laterally, as if clearing one's sector with their back against a wall within a structure.

Honestly I live for these videos. These have been so helpful and useful. I try and implement them every time I go to the range as best I can. Plus I am I’d say in between moderate and expert when it comes to shooting however some of my friends just started and shooting and these instructional videos are great for their level and mine. It’s a great mix.

This is harder and more intricate than it looks; sidestepping is one thing, but this continuous 'drop-step', as it is denoted in USPSA footwork terminology circles-- takes a while to master and be able to perform consistently, at the right cadence, and as Gordon indicated, such that a 'board could stay level' on one's head. The benefits of mastering this footwork are multi-fold, however. Firstly, it allows one to dynamically 'shoot' into, and between, cover/barricades, without awkwardly pie-ing out the shoulders/hips (israeli style), unnecessarily. Secondly, it allows for, with practice and mastery of the footwork, semi-rapid, lateral displacement without crossing of the feet or turning of the hips, meaning that one can deliver, again-- with due practice-- successive shots, while displacing laterally, while keeping body armor forward (towards relative area of the threat), without being forced into engaging from a offset angle, as what happens when the feet turn-towards the direction of the lateral motion. Overall, a simple, often overlooked, yet crucial set off footwork to have in one's defensive combatives toolkit. Great video, hope to see more of this drill, in coming videos.

I turn to direction of movement but keep foot nearest target pointed (45 degrees) towards target as I move. Practice this (and shooting moving backwards toe-heel) a lot.

Yes, that’s definitely should be practiced, too. This is a specific type of lateral movement for specific purposes.
