My husband is a pastor and his message today was very much like Bishop Budde’s. Sermons step on toes every Sunday in our country. That’s the hallmark of a good sermon. This was a good sermon. As controversial as Trump and his behavior is…it would be really hard not to step on his toes because let’s face it…his behavior and lies are absolutely opposite of the gospel message of Jesus. Trump only likes the Franklin Grahams who mollycoddle him and talk about how God saved him this past summer. That’s NOT a pastor’s job. His/her job is to make us aware of our own mistakes and help us to change so Christ increases in our lives. We don’t go to church to feel good…we go to worship GOD!!!
This was a great message Pastor Pat. Thanks for sharing. God bless you and your service to the truth.
My husband says that as he writes his sermons every week God often steps on his toes. I’m sure you’ve found the same Pastor Kahnke.

@ That’s certainly your prerogative Mr.Wright. I’m not sure why you say that but may God lead you in the right direction and bless you with His mercy. And it’s not my husband’s church…it belongs to God. He just tries to speak God’s word and minister in the compassion and mercy of Christ Jesus. May you find God’s peace in whatever church you attend where His truth is preached.

She didn't trade the Truth for a lie. I doubt the person you are commenting to's husband calls people out in church. Jesus didn't arrive by golden escalator but in a dirty trough. He didn't hype up hate he fostered love. I'm astonished at the numbers of evangelical christians in the USA who voted for this Felon and shocked at the number of catholics who voted for him in double digits. I had earlier listened to Bishop Budde's sermon and imagined Jimmy Carter, George W. Bush, Ronald Reagan or Barack Obama sitting in that pew. They would have taken the sermon as she meant it to be; as a reminder of the great responsibility God lays on our leaders to serve the people. I'm a Canadian and a member of the Presbyterian Church in Canada. This is the sort of sermon I have heard on many occasions, and yes, my church requires all Christians to live out their faith in service to society, including refugees. ❤

God never changes. “Righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne “

@patriciajohn8196, Its sad that your " trusted" bible study friends say that mercy is only for the repentant? Kindly ask them that when Jesus died for humanity on the cross where we repentant, then? Ephesians chapter 2 beautifully describes the terrible condition of mankind and how, in that terrible state, the grace of Jesus saved humanity. The verse in Romans 2:4 says, "Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?" Romans 5: 8 says, "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." No, mercy is not for the repentant but mercy has the beautiful capacity to bring people to a place of repentance. For because of Christ's mercy, we can enjoy His love, goodness, grace, kindness, and every other beautiful virtue that makes our wonderful God the wonderful God He is.

My two cents on this is a quote from William Tyndale. A leader of the protestant reformation that was attributed to "The Church is the one institution that exists for those outside it".
Christ forgave humanity before we were ever deserving of it. In all its sinful ugliness. And I think if we want to be his followers, we should live like that too. We are not forgiven because we follow Christ, but we follow Christ because we were forgiven.

Trumpism in the churches is why many people stopped attending church services. It was no longer the worship of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. It became putting a flawed human being above the Lord, and that’s unacceptable and heretical. So my fellowship and prayer circle is my Heavenly Father, my Savior Yeshua and the Holy Spirit, the gentle abiding one. Speaking of all the hate, the overwhelming hatred in the atmosphere was soul crushing for me and I was just in tears most of the time. At one point during this overwhelmingly hateful environment, I was in prayer and the Holy Spirit told me to read Psalm 37. So, I directly went to Psalm 37 and read it. As I was reading it I laughed and told the Holy Spirit, oh my goodness, you do know me better than I know myself. I thanked him for his guidance and comfort and include this Psalm in my daily reading most days.

Bishop Budde spoke the pure words of Jesus, plain and simple! Remember, Jesus was considered a radical in his day, and his words offended many people. as they continue to do so even today, among those who don't know him or follow him. "Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil," says Jesus in John 3:19
"Do not think that I have come to bring peace on the earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword [of division ... ], says Jesus in Matthew 10:34 (AMP version.) These scriptures explain why the Bishop was met with such vitriol from the president and his followers regarding her sermon! ✝

This is why it's so important to read the actual scripture from the Bible in a sermon. Yes she spoke truth, but with her own words. Those that are sitting in this room listening don't know what Jesus says in the Bible. Although they sell Bibles, and claim they are Christians. When you read from what is in the Bible , they can't argue or criticize. Because they will actually see you read what God is saying.

I do vibe with the Bishop 100 percent. I have been so disheartened since evangelical Christians began pushing themselves into positions of power and then using that power for their political view. To me, as soon as you do that, you separate yourself from Christ's teaching. I grew up in a Catholic church but no longer attend. My Uncle was a Catholic priest who served during WWII. He taught me that every time we speak or act, it should be out of love and never anger or judgement. He reminded us that we are only saved by God's grace and by ourselves, we would be lost. This means that grace must emanate from us. He also encouraged social justice as a priority. Once, back in the 1980s, before he died, immigration was coming up in politics (as it has throughout our history). I asked him what he believed about people being here "illegally" and how a Christian should deal with that kind of person. He told us this: Imagine a man walking across the desert and he comes upon a tired and worn out man who is sitting on a rock. The man, not knowing what to do, asks the man are you a "legal" or "illegal" immigrant. The man simply looks up and says: "I am thirsty." The ending according to my Uncle was: Now you decide what to do. Just my thoughts....no judgement on anyone who disagrees.

It's a disgrace, but it is consistent with a movement that fights tooth and nail against everything Jesus' stands for - I call it Christianity against Christ and Godlessness in the name of God. I won't speculate on a curse - having hatemongers in power is enough of a curse.

You asked us to picture a Pastor that we knew and respected saying the words of Pastor Budde. What a precious, brilliant suggestion for you to make. I did that. It kinda of helped me to experience a memory of a man and his wife who were powerhouses of Christian love. My Pastor was someone like yourself, or Reverend Ed Trevers, or perhaps Pastor Budde. People who just share Christ's Love. I understand the message of your sermon here, and I get it, but I got something else from your sermon as well. A momentary connection with an important support system from my past.
Honestly, since November 5th, I don't even really sleep well. Fear and uncertainty have become my primary thoughts and constant companions. I fear what Trump and the tech bros will do to us economically, but mostly I fear for all minority communities. This administration seems to be targeting all of the strides made by African Americans for decades. Unfortunately, that's just the beginning of the mischief that angry, unhappy man seeks to bring to us. Reconnecting with a bonus support system is a great gift right now. Thank you Pastor Pat, good thinking!

I truly admire Bishop Budde speaking truth to power. And I found nothing nasty or offensive in anything she said in that soft, gentle but firm way. What she said is exactly what all Christians should hear time and time again. She spoke of truth, compassion, mercy, unity, love.....all Christian values. That's the message of the Gospel, Jesus' message to all of us who are believers. Trump and his supporters do not care for the truth hence the vicious criticism. God bless Bishop Budde! May more religious leaders show the same moral courage that she did.
