A Land for All is possible

  • I have never shied away from speaking up for human rights, democracy, peace and justice and have been a campaigner on these issues all my adult life.
But as so many of my peers, I have for months struggled to come to terms with what has been happening in Israel and Gaza, and to find my voice. The discourse over the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has become so toxic, so uncompromising, that it seems there is no longer any room for nuance or balance, let alone for any kind of vision that charts a course forward and imagines what peace could look like.
The brutal Hamas attack of October 7th was a monstrous atrocity that killed more Jews than any event since the end of the Holocaust. The perpetrators are not freedom fighters, but violent extremists who have held Gaza and most of its people in a suffocating chokehold. The sooner that chokehold ends, the better for everyone.
But one could also be forgiven for thinking that Israel’s ongoing military response to the October 7th attack has been lacking any discernible objective. It has resulted in disproportionate and reckless killing of innocent civilians in Gaza and suggests that continuous warfare seems more opportune to some Israeli leaders than any viable peace plan. Surely they know what many others have said before me: there will never be a military solution to this conflict.
One reason is that extremism is a renewable resource. As long as people die, the scars will deepen, the pain will grow, and new generations will seek to avenge their mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters, kicking off yet another cycle of violence.
How much worse can it get? At present, agitators on either side are spiralling backwards, piling up historical grievances in search of original sins that will trump one another. All that does is fuel the futile combat we see every day on social media. It has to end.
This is indeed a seminal moment for both Israeli Jews and Palestinian Arabs. They need and deserve more than short-lived attempts to manage, rather than solve, the conflict.
Not too long ago, a dear friend introduced me to the remarkable group of people - Jews, Christians, and Muslims; Israelis and Palestinians - behind an even more remarkable initiative: A Land for All.
A Land for All is a bold and audacious vision that would enable both Israeli Jews and Palestinian Arabs not simply to co-exist, but to flourish and prosper on a common understanding of the ground beneath their feet - their shared sense of a homeland, whether you call it Israel, or whether you call it Palestine.
In practical terms, A Land for All entails a two-state solution rooted in the belief that there should rightfully be a Palestinian state and that there should rightfully continue be a Jewish state. In and of itself, this would merely emulate many of the proposals made over the last 50 years: a permanent physical segregation of peoples, doing little to ease tension or nourish a sense of shared interest, shared responsibility, and shared destiny. This is where A Land for All offers a brave new premise: only partnership, as well as personal and collective equality, will bring a safer and better life for all.
At the heart of this lies a commitment to freedom of movement and, ultimately, residence for Palestinians and Israelis: Israeli-Jewish settlers would be able to remain inside a Palestinian state and become permanent residents of that state, while remaining Israeli citizens. Palestinian refugees could return, become citizens of Palestine, but would also be able to become permanent residents of the State of Israel. At the same time, the citizens of both states would enjoy equal rights, with shared institutions to address issues of mutual concern, from resource management to climate change. Jerusalem would become the capital of both states, open to all, and jointly administered.
A Land for All is the result of more than a decade of conversations and consultations. The brilliant and enthusiastic minds behind it understand that it will take much persuasion and even more hard work to bring it to life. And of course, as a first step, it would require the cessation of hostilities and the return of all hostages. But to me, A Land for All is the most profound articulation to date of what Israel and Palestine could become if both sides focussed on what unites them, rather than what divides them.
When we first spoke about A Land for All, I was reminded of the words of the English writer Samuel Johnson: “Nothing will ever be attempted if all possible objections must first be overcome.” Decades ago, the architects of European integration must have felt the same way. After two world wars and so much division, resentment, and distrust between European powers, they reached for the stars. And it worked. Their vision produced the longest period of prosperity and peace Europe has ever seen. What if Israelis and Palestinians, buoyed by the essential support of their allies, were to reach for the stars, too?

Let me tell you a few things that will shock you to your core: TWENT PERCENT of Israelis are Arab in Israel. 35 % of the doctors and SIXTY PERCENT of the pharmacists in Israel are Arab and Arabs serve in the Israeli army. The Palestinian NEVER existed but Arabs who came to the area after 1880 took this name in 1964. Palestine is a name Rome gave the area after the GREEK Philistines who were extinct when they gave Israel the name. If you want to get educated here it is and if you read this you will UNDERSTAND the truth. Islamists headed by Iran want a caliphate and the destruction of Israel but they have infiltrated every area in the US... schools, government, Michigan, weapons industry etc.... They kill gays and many practice genital mutilation and many young girls die from infection. Gays are free in Israel and women are equal. Did you know gay Arabs often sneak into Israel to be hidden by Jews from their very own families? If you dont believe me about Palestinians.... go look up the 1920's Palestinian soccer team. They are all JEWISH!!! The area was under the Ottoman Empire from 1517-1917 and there was never a Palestinian state. See ISGAP episode 24 with SON OF HAMAS. The Arabs have rejected a state at least 6 times. Consider the following:
One: At the recommendation of the Peel Commission, the British, who controlled Palestine at the time, agreed to create a two-state solution, offering the Palestinian Arabs 80 per cent of the disputed territory.
The Palestinian Jews said yes, the Arabs said no.
Two: On Nov. 7, 1947, the United Nations voted to create two states. The Palestinian Jews (who changed their name to Israelis) said yes, the Palestinian Arabs said no.
Three: After the Six Day War In 1967, Israel wanted to return the captured lands to Egypt and Jordan or to the Palestinian Arabs. The Arab league met in Sudan and said: “No peace with Israel, no recognition of Israel, no negotiations with Israel.” In other words, the Arabs said no.
Four: In 2000, then-Israeli prime minister Ehud Barak offered all of Gaza and 94 per cent of the West Bank with East Jerusalem as its capital to Yasser Arafat. Arafat said no.
Five: In 2008, the prime minister of Israel, Ehud Olmert, added additional land to the previous offer of 2000. Mahmoud Abbas said no. History shows that each time Israel has agreed to offering land for peace, the Palestinian Arabs have rejected the offers.
Six: The one time, in 2005, when Israel unilaterally left Gaza to the Palestinian Arabs. The terrorists took control and turned it into a base from which thousands of rockets have been fired into Israel up to, and including, the present day.
Trading land for peace didn’t work.
The Arabs want the eradication of Jews more than they want a state
If the Palestinians truly care about their children and, here are some tips for them:
    1. Do not elect a terrorist organization to rule over you.
    2. Do not educate your children from the age of zero to hate Jews and to aspire to murder them as the sole purpose of their lives. Invest in your children's education instead, maybe in a few decades their lives could improve as a result.
    3. Cherish life instead of death and martyrdom.
    4. Hold your leaders accountable and protest when they operate against your wellbeing, use you or manipulate you. Revolt against them if they treat you badly.
    5. Admit the historical fact that the Arabs lost the war they started in 1948. Deal with it. Own your loss, there is no shame in it. Hold yourself accountable and leverage it as a growth opportunity instead of calling it “Nakhba” and blaming others for the consequences of your leaders' actions.
    6. Recognize Israel’s right to exist and accept the fact that Israel is a sovereign state and legitimate under international law. Understand that the Jews are here to stay and will never again leave this region, no matter how hard you try.
    7. Focus on rebuilding yourself as a nation instead of spending your time and energy trying to annihilate your neighbors. Focus on the land that you do have and on how to self develop and thrive.
    8. Stop trying to constantly frame Israel and blame it for false crimes using Qatar funded media outlets and other means of propaganda.
    9. Stop institutionalizing and legislating salary payments of hundreds of millions of dollars annually to imprisoned terrorists and the families of terrorists who died while carrying out terror attacks against Israel.
    10. Stop accepting military aid, training, weapons and financial aid from Iran, the world's worst state sponsor of terrorism. They do not truly care about you and only use you as pawns.
    11. Release the hostages kidnapped by Hamas on October 7, including a one-year old infant and his mother who have been held hostages to this very day.
    12. Lay down your arms and stop choosing violence as the only solution for your problems. Look where it got you to in the last 75 years.
    13. Understand that actions speak a whole lot louder than meaningless and empty words. The entire world is watching you.
    14. Take a hard look at yourself and your actions before blaming Israel for yet another injustice.
    15. Now take a hard look at Israel and see how, just by following these tips, it became the most thriving and successful democracy in the region.
    16. Embrace peace.

This well meaning gentleman lives in LaLa Land. Great businessmen dont necessarily know much about history and ideology.
The main reason why there wont be any peace is that 80% of Palestinians and muslims in général are proHamas qnd a Palestinian state next to Israel will ony be a stepping Stone on the way to destroy Israël.
Islam has always treated Jews as people to be mistreated and exploited, and consider a Jewish indépendant state as an insult to the muslim pride.
Any so called peace with any arab state will only be an intermediate stage until the next nationalistes or islamist régime décides to break free from any agreement and try to destroy Israel, and here are a few examples: Iran (after the Shah), Turkey with Erdoğan, the very "Cold" peace with Jordan and Egypt.
80% of Israelis have "finally" understood this and will refuse such a Palestinian state.
The solution? None, except à "cold" war or à "cold" peace.
If M Branson is so convinced of his talents, let him prove it by making "real peace" between the USA and Russia or China.
Unfortunately, Idéologies like communisme, fascisme or islamic fanaticism cannot be beaten, just controlled.

Throughout history, Muslims welcomed and protected the Jews, starting from allowing them into Jerusalem when they opened it in the seventh century after the Christian Byzantine forbade them to enter it, then in Andalusia, Morocco, Ottoman, Egypt, Iraq, Yemen and in all Muslim lands, when they were persecuted and pushed out from country after country in Europe, Muslim countries open their hearts for them. It is not the Jews or the Judaism but it is Zionism and Israel that was established by force in 1948 on a land stolen from its rightful owners. Palestinians welcomed the immigrant Jews who came to Palestine during the early decades of the twentieth century, till they discovered they were training and forming a terrorist army, planning to take over their country, but thanks to British rule, they were unable to defend their land.

Richard doesn’t address the fact that ethnic cleansing of Palestinians has been going on for nearly a century.
The ICJ has already ruled that the military occupation that Israel is imposing is illegal should be immediately dismantled.
His solution sounds pretty illogical ands far fetched, imagine if South Africa split into multiple mini-states based on race- a state for whites, one for blacks and others for different minorities. It’s infeasible and unsustainable.
More realistic is that international law should be respected by both parties in their mutual interests but we know which side simply doesn’t give a damn about that.
This issue would not have reached such a crisis point for Palestinians if there was no Israeli exceptionalism. The US, by providing economic and military support, to secure their own interests in the region, adds literal fuel to the fire since they have never respected international law either.

A two state solution has no support in either community. The current brutal conflict has made this outcome all but impossible.
The current government of Israel does have a strategy in Gaza: ethnic cleansing. They are trying to create a human catastrophe in the area that will incentivize the Palestinians to emigrate to other countries. This is being driven by the Settler movement in Judea and Samaria, who have a lot of influence over the current government. They have destroyed all the infrastructure in Gaza and made food production impossible for the population. They are preventing humanitarian aid from entering the area and reaching the Arab population.
There are only two ways to stop this conflict: a two-state solution or a unitary Palestinian state with power-sharing between the Arabs and the Jews. It is unlikely that either model will be implemented.
This is the beginning of the end for the Zionist project in Palestine. The Zionists think that they are in a race with the "Axis of Resistance", but they are wrong in this assessment. This is not a race to the finish line, it is a marathon, and Israel does not have the ability to fight a never ending low intensity war against the Islamists.
Israel's fate is the fate of French Algeria. The Israelis will kill tens of thousands of Palestinians, but in the end their sheer numbers and the declining quality of life in the area will cause most of the Jews to emigrate from the region.
Conflicts like this usually end with one side destroying the other. The side that is more impoverished and has a higher birthrate is the side that wins. In Palestine, that is the Arab side.
This conflict will last a few more decades, and then Israel will collapse and cease to exist.

Agreed, a land for all is possible. A one state solution with a constitution for all including protective rights for Palestinians who are disadvantaged through the Zionist movement since its inception. The multi-decade events that lead to Oct 7 and the reported fact that IDF killed the vast majority of the people tragically lost on Oct 7 and hence their own (Hannibal doctrine) says a lot about the work that needs to be done to bring about a solution. Given your characterization of Hamas, which has been funded by the Israeli government for years, I am waiting to see the Palestinian army needed to defend themselves (only fair )that you are willing to fund with your millions/ billions. Otherwise I suggest you keep your pov regarding Hamas to yourself

The only path to peace is a single state. That is the space where more reasonable voices can come together. Continuing apartheid is no path forward. But the two state solution can only lead to further polarization. It fails to address the fact that the Palestinian Zionists had no right to exclude the Palestinian Arabs from their project in 1948. If you are truly committed to a long term, peaceful solution then talk to Miko Pelod, author of the book "The General's son" Or read the book "Enemies & Neighbours" by Ian Black to understand the history. The Holy Land, for want of a better term, is a single place. There can be no peace so long as it remains divided.

Only one solution. Israel established by the UN. The world must decide that the holy land will be under the UN .any jew Muslim that wants to leave will accept in other places in the world with compensation and full citizenship . You can't leave the situation as is. The cost will be very high.must be a plan or us or them. We must divorce .

  • @johnrodger5467
    @johnrodger5467 Місяць тому

Sounds like a reasonable solution that takes into account the wishes of both sides. Hope it gets somewhere. It seems to me like a difficult divorce where both sides will have to make painful compromise for the sake of their children. I would urge both sides to accept what you propose.

Did you forget the 80 years of occupation, oppression, appartied, killings, theft, massacres, Nakba. Hamas killed only israeli soldiers on october the 7th, the rest were actually killed by IDF.
And what does proportionate mean??? How many killings is ok????? Understand the context, understand what your country England did 100 years ago

Richard, are you living on another planet? Most of the Palastinian support Hamas, Most of the Israeli support write wing parties. Nationalism and religious are much stronger than any uthopic unreal ideas. This area always had wars, it's the nature of this place. Regarding the success story of peaceful Europe, wait until the Arab/Muslims immigrants will be the majority there. Im the middle east, A peace can only be achieved if Palastinian will accept Israel and live side by side peacefully as autonomy state without any army or resistance groups.

So basically what you are saying is that there can only be peace if Palestinians bend the knee and forever accept a brutal apartheid rule of terrorism, stealing of their resources and ethnic cleansing to endure by them , their children and their generations forever. And you expect people around the world to support this instead of all Jews, christians and Muslims have equal rights?
