Are Fig Trees Deer Resistant

  • Are fig trees deer resistant? Are they deer proof? Do you need to protect your fig tree from deer? We're slowly finding out just how deer resistant these fruit trees are. I planted my fig orchard last spring. The deer have been roaming through the orchard all summer long. I just finally noticed one leaf and the top of one stem bitten off. So far, I'd say fig trees are deer resistant. I'll keep you updated on how this goes but it's looking promising so far. As for the actual figs, I'm not sure they'll be so luck, but the trees remain intact.

      Thanks Angela, and I'm glad to hear they're leaving your trees alone. The sap really isn't edible and can burn their mouths. It's not natural for them to eat them and I believe the only reason they eat them in some areas is because they have nothing else to eat. Sounds like we're both lucky!

    Out of 15 or so different varieties, the deer have only ever eaten leaves off my Yellow Long Neck, all of them, but it was a small tree. That was last year. No fig trees have been bothered this year, but that's been my experience thus far. Good luck in your orchard. I'm following your progress closely, and I love seeing the updates.

      Right on, thanks for following and thanks for sharing your experience, Adam. I'll definitely continue to update as the years roll on. Finally seeing my first ripe figs in the orchard this year. They got a late start due to my own fault but I think it's going to be smooth sailing from here now that they're in ground. Just saw 3 ripe figs on my Improved Celeste this morning. I'm going to give them a day or 2 to finish ripening. A little nervous about how long they'll last on the tree but also shocked that I found them and they hadn't been eaten yet.

    Deer have absolutely decimated my fig trees several times throughout spring and summer. Mostly new leaves and branches but many full sized leaves as well. In tried using different sprays and a fishing line fence, but they still attacked them resulting in zero figs for the season 😫. I live in the northern NJ suburbs, with not much woods around. Hopefully your area might have enough of a natural food source available. I’m building a fence around them next season. Best of luck and great vids man!

      Thanks, I appreciate it. Yeah, I'm not sure what it is about the east coast deer but everyone I've talked to over there says the deer eat everything, including the poisonous plants. For example, every part of a rhododendron is poisonous and will kill an animal. In fact, my mother-in-law had a goat that got out and ate an entire rhododendron to the ground but then died within a week. For some reason the deer over there are able to tolerate way more than they do over there.

    I find there is almost nothing a deer won't eat but agree that some plant types only get nibbled whereas some get stripped bare. At my place (interior PNW), I have found that elderberry and buckthorn are fairly resistant whereas ALL the rosaceae, grapes, ribes and kiwi get ruthlessly mauled. After a crazy and unrelenting deer season I am thinking of converting my whole yard to elderberries... at least they grow easily from cuttings.

      The deer never messed with the figs and oddly enough, the birds weren't much of a problem either. The issues I have with the deer are that they nibble on the top buds and essentially tip prune for me, lol. Occasionally they nibble on a leaf or 2 but I don't think they like them because they don't eat all the leaves. The biggest problem I have with them is in the fall, when the bucks come through. They rub their antlers on the trees and bust branches left and right. I may end up fencing this area off or I've thought about heavily planting a border with something so that they can't get through. Overall, the deer haven't been enough of a concern that I'm in a big rush to do anything about it but eventually I want to keep them out.

    Mike, It's very different in different regions. I don't know if it's the type of deer or just different conditions. Here in North Jersey deer are really a plague & unprotected Rhododendron will have every flower bud eaten off in winter & springtime new growth often nibbled. Many fig growers here wrap their fig trees for the winter against frost (& deer.) I write this so that you can warn your viewers that deer issues vary widely across the country, so don't feel safe until you check your local conditions.

    I really enjoy your channel and have learned a lot watching your fig videos - thank you!! However, I have to disagree with you on this one. I live in southeast VA zone 8a, and have been struggling to grow figs for many years due to deer damage. I've found that the most severe damage comes in early spring when the buds start to swell just prior to leaves emerging. The deer will devour these buds, which badly sets back the fig tree's development. The last two years all my fig trees are now inside cages.

    Im in South Carolina and the deer definitely try the figs planted by my driveway, but I have to agree for the most part they just tip them here or there during the derth then move on. I do believe they had a hand in cleaning out my low growing fig fruit though. Meanwhile they will jump my fence and decimate my apples and pears pretty much eat them back to the main trunk. They don't touch them on the west coast. I've learned this about the east coast over the years. Many people have told me they have deer problems with rhododendrons over there. Mike, hang sandwich bags with chopped up Ivory soap inside them on the trees to keep deer away.

      That would certainly do it. I've thought about creating a dense planting of rhododendrons with a few opening and just putting up some gates.

    Hi Mike, you might be safe as far as them eating your trees. BUT, the bucks might like your trees for rubbing their antlers in and destroying them. That’s what I would be more afraid of.

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  2 роки тому

      Yeah, I'm a little worried about that. They've taken out a few green giants over the years by rubbing and almost completely took out a 10 foot tall cedar. Rubbed the bark off half the trunk. I'm thinking about trying the Irish Spring thing or pouring repellent around the perimeter of my orchard.

      @@MikeKincaid79 the Irish springs soap won’t work at all I used a 3 strand electric fence around my garden. It worked pretty good but if you will take some aluminum foil strips that are about 3”s wide and 4”s long smear some peanut butter on the foil, place them on the top wire around your garden about 15 to 20 feet apart the deer will lick the peanut butter one time and will never go near the fence again.
