Kiaora kotou. In our carvings the head is taboo, tapu in my tongue or sacred. So the head is given special attention, and is descriptive of the person, ancestor male or female. The eyes are not just eyes as one might assume, but in some cases the eyes might reassemble moons or half moons. Celestial, maramataka Luna calendar, for example, when is the best time to fish, plant and many more. Even the number of teeth might mean days or even months. So it is why the head is important. Though we do not have masks the similarity in attention given to carvings is important, the protruding tongue does not automatically mean war or anger. The body however, can be distorted or out of proportion to the head, again the importance of the head. One must pay attention to the carver who is knowledgeable in his culture or variance between one group even closely related. Colors were dictated by what was available, normally plant materials etc. Thanks for sharing.
Dzunukwa, wild woman of the woods. The movie Shadow of the hawk has a Dzunukwa. This is Sasquatch or Bigfoot with the Indigenous beliefs. I was scared of the Dzunukwa as a kid and dreamed of this creature as an adult as well. Was this creature good or bad I just don't know, or could she just give you bad luck?

I absolutely love this channel! It's like having TVO on my phone. 😁
Thanks for this!
Thanks a lot for this. It's nice to see how Levi-Strauss' himself basically gives a summary of his book.
Vardø the First, would that book happen to be The Way of the Masks?
