Honestly Jon Favreau is one of the most important film directors of the modern day. Elf for many is considered one of the best Christmas movies. He single handedly kickstarted the avengers franchise with Iron Man. Created baby Yoda. Managed to actually make a great live action adaptation of a Disney movie (lion king). And his movie Chef is easily one of the best food movies of all time!
After seeing this I wonder if a scene like that was even planned to begin with, or if they just quickly decided on the spot, "Hey let's have the Elf run up to him thinking he's Santa"
But don't they have to get permission from the people to show their faces in the movie? Did they have to track ALL of them down and have them sign a paper?
Good point. Some people aren't comfortable in being in the spotlight and put out for public scrutiny. It's quite an invasion of privacy. I wonder if they received any lawsuits because of it...?
The way its done: a sign is put up stating a film is being made and by walking or driving down that street you are giving your permission to appear in the production
That was my thought too! I mean they must have disinfected that rail and stuck on gum pieces pre-chewed by Will Ferrell to then stick in his mouth...... right? If not, I am forever mortified.😂

@@delusionalmilkshake Also, Fellowship made almost $900,000,000.00 worldwide. While not making it a "good" movie necessarily (I think it was) it does seem to imply that it was a popular movie. Again, worldwide.

Looking forward now to watching Elf with my Girlfriend over Xmas this year as she hasn't seen it. So impressed by this.
These guys must have forgotten Peter Jackson, 20 months earlier, had just released the first movie, of one of the biggest trilogies ever. Not only did they use forced perspective, they pioneered new methods of filming, so they could move the camera without breaking the illusion.

that’s crazy i always got anxious and second hand embarrassment in the scenes where he was exploring new york but felt comfort in knowing they were all actors...
I know right? They seem to think they revived it. The only difference is that Elf is primarily only used forced perspective shots of the actual actors, whereas LotR also added hobbit body doubles like Kiran Shah for wide full-body standing/action shots. Though I do think it's hilarious that a little boy was used for Papa Elf's legs, they had to get creative. lol Forced perspective will always be a fascinating process to me.
My friend was one of the guys right next to Will Ferrell when he was walking in that crowd of people. He said he didn’t realize what was going on at the time

"All I wanted to do that day was jog, and run in my red suit... and kind of look like Santa..." 😢😢
And his movie Chef is easily one of the best food movies of all time!
wait WHAT
they were so lucky to find that bearded guy in the red suit l.mfao
Ikr what a coincidence
After seeing this I wonder if a scene like that was even planned to begin with, or if they just quickly decided on the spot, "Hey let's have the Elf run up to him thinking he's Santa"
@@evannagy9699 I wonder!
"You sit on a Throne Of LIES..." lol I want to imagine he just ran into that department store Santa and started bugging him.
I can just imagine the red jogger guy watching Elf and seeing himself 🤣
But don't they have to get permission from the people to show their faces in the movie? Did they have to track ALL of them down and have them sign a paper?
jimbolen been was gonna ask the same thing, I’m really curious 🤷♀️ saves money on a low budget film to not have to pay all those extras 🤨
Jeez why you such a karen
Good point. Some people aren't comfortable in being in the spotlight and put out for public scrutiny. It's quite an invasion of privacy. I wonder if they received any lawsuits because of it...?
@@heyboo9943 it’s not like people are going to track them down and stalk them.
The way its done: a sign is put up stating a film is being made and by walking or driving down that street you are giving your permission to appear in the production
So did he actually eat gum off the street then ?! 😝
That was my thought too! I mean they must have disinfected that rail and stuck on gum pieces pre-chewed by Will Ferrell to then stick in his mouth...... right? If not, I am forever mortified.😂
@@mariateresarossi5456 same
@@mariateresarossi5456 You are forever mortified. They did not use stunt gum.
I am very certain Will Ferrell said that scene was completely sanitary in the commentary of the movie.
they took off all the previous gum and put a thin layer of plastic wrap on it, and all the gum *he* chewed
My 25 and 30 year old daughter's favorite. I'm still routing for Charlie Brown and Rudolph...Happy New Year to all
Literally had a smile on my face watching this...Elf was the go-to Christmas movie when my daughter was growing up. Absolutely love Elf ❤️ Watching this hasn’t spoilt the magic of this movie for me at all, just got a much deeper appreciation of how it was all put together ❤️ Favourite line ever “Santa, I know him” 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Forced perspective wasn't done in 50 years? except lord of the rings was doing it in 1999
Exactly. And both Elf and Lord of The Rings were made by New Line Cinema, so I don’t know what they’re talking about here. 😂
The fact he just sat on a kid 😂
PLEASE.....bring ELF back to Netflix. How could you not?
Elf is on STARZ right now, can’t be on Netflix too
I heard that certain things are on Netflix depending on what country you're in
" Bye Buddy, hope you find your dad!" "THANKS MR. NARWHAL!!" I just love that quote and I don't even know why
This makes Elf ever more charming. How awesome!
It’s crazy how that guy is the red outfit was just 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 😂😂😂
Forced perspective hasn't been done for 50 or 60 years... except for Lord of the Rings which just used it 7 years before this.
It wasn't 7 years before this but only a year and it relatively unknown movie back then
@@delusionalmilkshake The Lord of the Rings was a"relatively unknown movie"? I was mistaken about the year Elf came out (2003). Its possible that when the "making of" Elf was being made LOTR had not been released. That would explain the inconsistency.
@@35Danconn yeah, the lord of the rings is not that known movie, where i live(it is not usa) movie is not that known or seen by that many people, along with star wars
@@delusionalmilkshake ok. But the producers of Elf (Warner Bros.) and the producers of LOTR (New Line) are both American companies. Meaning that the people involved in the production of Elf would have know of LOTR. If Elf was an "indie" film produced outside of the us you would have a point. Your knowledge or lack there of isn't the point. However, I do give some credit to your point about their respective release dates in my previous comment.
@@delusionalmilkshake Also, Fellowship made almost $900,000,000.00 worldwide. While not making it a "good" movie necessarily (I think it was) it does seem to imply that it was a popular movie. Again, worldwide.
The guy jogging not being an actor is one of the greatest behind the scenes reveals I’ve ever heard.

So the New York parts were like Borat or those "it's just a prank, bro" videos, just Will Ferrell pranking real people as an elf.
I watch 3 Christmas movies every season, miracle on 34th (new version), the grinch and ELF literally created a timeless classic! It’s what my kids will watch!
It’s one of my top 3 too
Isnt it amazing how something you watch and enjoy so much like Elf, the amount of effort, genius and passion really goes into behind the scenes. I genuinely wouldn't have thought how technically complicated this movie clearly was to make. I'm just really impressed.
Looking forward now to watching Elf with my Girlfriend over Xmas this year as she hasn't seen it.
So impressed by this.
I love how Netflix makes a video about the making of a movie but doesn’t even have the film on their website!🤣
Ikr
CaroLiNe Duffy... do you LiKe Scottish poetry¿
It’s a uk post they have it but it sucks it not on Canadian Netflix
It's available depending on what country you're in, from what I've heard
These guys must have forgotten Peter Jackson, 20 months earlier, had just released the first movie, of one of the biggest trilogies ever. Not only did they use forced perspective, they pioneered new methods of filming, so they could move the camera without breaking the illusion.
What movei
@@genesisrodriguez3051 the lotr trilogy
Yeah, but LotR had just came out when they were beginning shooting, so they most likely had no idea. It hadn't become a phenomena yet.
I was watching that part like ….reinvented the wheel my ass lmao
@@Chris-js6oz Both were produced by New Line Cinema. They already knew about forced perspective.
Santa had no idea he's career just took off without his reindeer
Imagine being that red dude in red joggers and gets pissed cuz some random dude dressed as an elf comes up to him randomly but then realizes he was part of a big movie a year later
Took me years to finally watch this movie. Years. I ignored it largely due to not being a fan of the whole look and style. But damn, this was a treasure after I finally got around to it.
that’s crazy i always got anxious and second hand embarrassment in the scenes where he was exploring new york but felt comfort in knowing they were all actors...
I literally just watched the elf in cinemas and came back home to find this in my UA-cam recommended.... UA-cam Knows...

"Forced perspective hadn't been done in 50 years." Lord of the Rings literally a few years earlier....
Exactly what I wanted to comment, but I saw yours. Yes, I can't believe he just mentions that.
Those Elves are _not_ little people.

My brother in law rented out our local movie theater for this Friday and we’re gonna watch this movie. So excited!

"I was in Elf!"
"I was the legs!"
I dunno... Seems like a reposted comment made 5 days.
My friend was one of the guys right next to Will Ferrell when he was walking in that crowd of people. He said he didn’t realize what was going on at the time
Usually watching behind the scenes ruins the "movie magic." This somehow enhanced it. Haha
"Nothing like this has been done for 50 or 60 years"
Lord of the Rings used perspective shots to make the Hobbits and Dwarves appear smaller.
why did I have to scroll for a minute, not see anything, post about that myself.... and then suddenly, all the "BuT LoTr DiD iT tHrEe YeArS eArLiEr!" show up? (sarcasm aside, I'm on the 'elf wasn't a good movie and making claims that are totally untrue' side.)
