Moving Equipment Before the Blizzard

  • Moving tractors before the blizzard! Batteries don't like cold weather! I'm getting anxious to get the John Deere machinery ready for spring planting. I decided to shuffle the sheds around and get the planter in the shed so I would have something to work on while the weather is bad!
I am a 5th generation family farmer from West-Central Minnesota. The recent interest in food, combined with a large amount of 'misinformation' has driven me to start this channel. I hope to be someone people can relate to and trust when they question how their food is grown and raised. I also hope to become a 'smarter' farmer through my experiences with this channel. I strongly believe we must have an open mind and a willingness to learn about others, or we cannot move forward as one. My goal is to build the connection between farmers and consumers by facilitating a collaborative conversation amongst everyone. I do this by sharing my day-to-day farming experiences, my opinions on certain topics, and occasionally visiting other farms and businesses to help better understand other farming and business practices. There is no limit to where this channel may go, so please join me!!

I’m an Agriculture student at Montana State University and I enjoy every bit of your videos. Growing up in an agriculture community, I came to learn that there are fine differences in succession between well-organized and un-organized operations. I have a lot of respect for you and your passion for farming and I can’t wait to see where this channel goes

Grew up in west Kansas. Amazing how much the two states look alike. Your video takes me home even with all the snow. We grew wheat, soybeans and corn. Our main tractors were Minneapolis Ms and case WD 90s. That was in the 60s. Yes, I am that old.

you need to add some cameras to your grain cart. We have put one on the auger and one on the rear of cart. the one on the back makes it nice for backing in sheds and while driving down the road. The one we put on the auger faces inside of wagon to watch while unloading on the go.

I understand how important farming is, but the people where I live are super obsessed with it, even more than normal farmers. Also, I hate it when crops are in my fields because I always want to do something with that large open area wherever there's crops there. Anyways, huge props to all the small farmers out there. That machinery is super expensive, and you won't always make a lot of money farming, but you people don't lose hope and keep going.

You've probably been given all kinds of advice about the battery issue. Personally, when I have equipment in cold storage I find it is best to avoid the batteries ever dying by trickle charging them. You can add on trickle chargers to each machine so that all you need to do is plug them in when you store them. Then you get a good start every time you need to.

Maybe an ideas I use battery tenders on Tractors that sit. Yes you have to leave them plugged in minimal power use. IT is nice to have a fresh charged battery. Also exstends the battery lie They are reasonably priced

I agree the reason the battery on the old tractor isn’t dead is because it doesn’t have the drain on the battery from the computers and digital clocks like the newer equipment has I have the same problem with my riding mower it has a digital clock on it and same with my atv he either needs tenders or disconnect the batteries over winter or once a month or so start everything up but that’s hard on the equipment to cold start them as far as the batteries lasting longer because of keeping them charged I leave the battery in my mower over winter and it is dead in spring I usually jump start it and leave it run and the battery charges back up I get usually 5 years out of the small battery that it has my brother takes his mower battery out and sits it on a piece of wood in his basement where it is warm and he keeps a tender on it and he is only getting 3-4 years out of his battery

Great video! Having a lot of farm machinery around here also the batteries always wear down in the shed....one product I have to recommend is the NOCO Genius Boost GB150 4000amp jump starter. I was skeptical but we've boost started completely dead semi's, a 9560RT, quad tracks and countless other machines all the way down to a dead UTV. Beats the hell out of pulling around a battery charger/booster and extension cord! $300 is expensive but it is one of those tools I wouldn't trade for anything now. I was laughing like crazy when you said "that figures" because that is my exact same reaction when I jump in a machine and you hear the click. Keep up the good work man!

When I worked in construction our shop foreman would always wait for the coldest day of the winter and then want us to go out and start all the trucks that had been sitting outside for months. We'd have to put weed burners under the oil crankcase to warm the engines up enough to start.

I use a solar panel. I put a diode into the control to each cord to keep them separate as not to be able to discharge through the Wal-Mart extension cords. I use a pigtail female plug into the trucks or tractors so no one can plug 120V into the system. When a battery deep cycles a considerable amount of performance is lost.
