This is so indescribably great. Like a lost album from Mayfield or Marvin. Takes me back to being a kid in Baltimore in 1972. The sounds, man...the souuuuunds. I come out of thrash metal as a musician myself, but am an old white boy from the hood who grew up on soul and R&B. All my metal pals I've played this for stop and go "Damn...thats fucking gooooood". It's transcendental in it's majesty. AND THAT FLUTE...omg yessssssssssssssssssssss.
There are many great drummers is the world but in my humble opinion Questlove is the greatest of all! Nobody else has that feeling and sound like he does!
Did you hear what Black Thought said?!?! OMG - that verse! "The city is like the Audubon Ballroom waiting for Malcolm." That whole verse is dope af but THAT LINE ... OMG!
I don't know what these young folk talking about...THIS is Funk & Soul... Classic at THAT. Before the words Hip Hop were ever constructed we simply identified this as SOUL and FUNK. I don't know why that became illegal or embarrassing. Rock & Roll is STILL Rock & Roll this is still soul...the rap piece is an unnecessary addition...Lord the groove speaks for itself...they could have the left the rap OUT and let the song speak for itself...It' shame it cannot just be DONE without all the Xtra :(
I love ?love ! He just knows how to keep it in the pocket and to keep it cool an simple! Many drummer nowadays always want to show how good they are, but drummer like ?love just know what it is all about and that makes him and this band soo great!!
YyyyYES!! Baby Huey! I adore this song and hold it close to my heart. Along with Baby Huey's life and every man, woman and child's struggle for survival. I recently learned to play this on guitar. Rock on fellas.
I even wrote my own lyrics to add and extend the bit where he's (essentially) freestyling about eating spam and Oreos. Adding to the intense feeling of doubt and the struggle of perseverance portrayed in the song.
Someone recently told me that they have given up on hip-hop cos they're sick of the bling and bitches. Listen to this! This is the best music I've heard in a long time!! I hope these guys never stop making music and I REALLY hope they get their asses to Dublin!
@Silaxian I sure appreciate that...you know youtube can be like the WWF sometimes and I didn't wanna fight about..I have been a Roots fan for a while now and predominantly because they play instruments...but thanks for understanding my tastes...we do like the song and that's good to have in common...so thanks
@YoLpIsBest no you dont follow your dreams, i travel the world playing the bass, i never thought it could happen but im here..its just amazing, there is no limit to your dreams
If you are a true hiphop head you'll know that this is also a beat off Ghostface's Cher Chez La Ghost album "hit the gym for two weeks im back all chisled, elbows unique now, meet the new me"
@kapelye actually it's more like gene chandler's version. he recorded this song first in the 60's. it's called "in my body's house". it's uptempo just like this. peep it and you'll see.. notice this does not have the flute like baby huey's version
@miamiwax -- I hear what yer saying, but in the studio version the roots do it is basically a redux of Huey's version (flute, horns and all)--they even get the recording in the mood in the weird soul/psychedelic party style that Huey loved. But yeah, big fan of Chandler, especially the later stuff.
13 years later and this song still kicks ass.
Literally every musician in this band absolutely kicks ass.
The Roots and John Legend...a match made in heaven.
LOVE John Legend, and he and The Roots showed fantastic taste when they covered this Baby Huey song. :)
Curtis mayfield song covered by Baby Huey and the Babysitter's
baby huey! The living legend....
At least somebody gave the man props. Respect
Baby Huey's musical brilliance lives on in a new generation. This is a win for the culture. RIP Huey.
Baby Huey was so underrated.

The origin by Baby Huey the legend is far superior. Top track & extremely relevant right now.

The pop on that snare...
Yeah, my mind would exploded if I could convince my snare to crack like that. I want it.
Great song needs to be longer

the bomb!! I love John Legends voice, he's my new male vocalist I'm schoolin with. He's like Marvin Gaye, a deep soul
think this - the world, no matter how bad it is, still has some free space for you and for this song. Guess you take it for granted :)
Great tribute !!
soul, jazz, rock, and hip-hop; and orgasm of music.
John Legend did a great job, excellent tribute to baby huey, loved it.

@Silaxian I sure appreciate that...you know youtube can be like the WWF sometimes and I didn't wanna fight about..I have been a Roots fan for a while now and predominantly because they play instruments...but thanks for understanding my tastes...we do like the song and that's good to have in common...so thanks

how does this only have 25,000 hits and Justin Bieber has 300 million. There's a real disconnect in today's society of what talent actually is.

Great song. Great version.
@ButteredSoul: Agreed. Although the version they are more strongly referencing is Baby Huey's.

@callofdude16 well, the roots love him, so he's GOTTA be something.

What is that synth sound in the big central riff that BT raps over? Is that a Moog thing? It's driving me nuts. I must have it.
