Why was the exchange a "bad" exchange. Alistair challenged the two women to ask probing questions of their guests. The reason so much of Britain was duped into Brexit was because the media did NOT ask guests the probing questions.

The female guest was allowed to talk for a long time without interuption, but as soon as Alastair spoke she interupted aggressively. He was right to reprimand Victoria as she never told the woman to shut up and let him speak.

The podcast with pictures. Nice. I, like Alistair, feel so fed up with the BS and occasionally find myself disagreeing disagreeably from my armchair. Mostly, I feel the pushing back on Newsnight was justified....and perhaps has been needed for a while.

I think you should have quoted Emily Maitlis from her News Agents podcast. She admitted that on Newsnight, presenters and producers showed contrasting Brexit views rather than one side vs. correct analysis. I.e. Pro and Anti Brexit generalists, rather than Brexiteers debating experts on customs documentation, trade agreements etc.

@@eightiesmusic1984 No. It was a democratic expression of preference much as the previous 1975 referendum was.
I can fully appreciate why people don't agree with it and fully endorse their democratic right to do so, but no I don't see it as the UK's biggest act of self harm since Suez.
Lots of other, far greater contenders for that dubious accolade including the Iraq War (in which that tosser Campbell was a key figure), our bonkers Covid response (which that other tosser Stewart was a key figure in) and the more recent completely unnecessary, avoidable war in Ukraine.

He is so desperate to be right having been one of the main protagonists trying to subvert a democratically made decision. For the simple minded, most Brexiteers knew that in the short term our financial status would be adversely impacted, however our sovereignty and the freedoms of not being encumbered by the stifling bureaucracy of the EU will be worth it. Of course the lefty loonies will do everything in their pathetic power to impede any progress - and prove to us all that in fact they were right. Guess what - you weren't!

Its so quintessentially English to focus on “how” Mr Campbell called out a lying Brexiteer and a complacent television host instead of focusing on the heart of the message: Brexit was a big fat con operation and the media failed to do their duty, which is calling out lies. By the way, what is considered “rude” on the BBC would’ve been a perfectly standard debating style on Dutch TV. The Dutch don’t sugarcoat it: if you’re a lying conman they’ll call you a lying conman on live TV. Because that’s what you are, and that’s all there is to it. 😊

Dr Jekyll/Mr Hyde, Bruce Banner/ the Incredible Hulk, Alistair Campbell/Malcolm Tucker. Happens to the best of us when we're in the thick of it. But really, the Brexit Party lady had indeed lost the argument once she brought up Iraq, a subject that has precious little to do with Brexit.

Unlike the informed, rationale exchanges with Rory, where interesting alternative views help inform, the Newsnight interview showcased a raging man resorting to irrational shouting and insults. Any merit in the debate was completely lost. Trying to cover up this dreadful display by blaming it on a conversation in the green room or simply disagreeing with her argument is weak. The same can be said for apologising to the BBC interviewer but not having the courage to do the same to the lady he raged against.

Unfortunately, your temper made her look better. You could have ridiculed her and made her look silly, but unfortunately the tempo of your arguing messed any decent message up. Things do need to be said on TV but you need to say them in calm manner.

Unfortunately Campbell's record on the truth is at best patchy and I've got to an age now where I can easily spot a person who bends reality to suit them. Campbell is such a man and the way to deal with these people is not to engage, as all you will do is be lost in the mess of his delusions.

What is starmer doing. All he had to do was sit back and keep his mouth shut about Brexit, but no. Now he looks more pro Brexit then half the tories. Labour could have welcomed the remain voters with open arms but I simply can’t vote for any politician that still stands by Brexit.

The NN and the fallout has been interesting. Alastair- I thought your message on the night was very clear and direct...but I personally thought you were a wee bit too aggressive...and believe you could have easily tied the silly UKIP lady up in knots with a more controlled vibe. It's a pity you didn't know who she was - I'm quite surprised about that! You're very decent in your thoughts about Victoria D. In an era of frustrating lack of BBC challenge, I reckon she's been at least trying to...and I reckon that she found herself just trying to hold the studio together diplomatically when things were kicking off. She was personally taken aback at the end...and I felt a wee bit for her. The truth will catch up with Phillips sooner or later...it doesn't need take a slanging match to make that happen.
