How to Breathe When Swimming | Fear of Water

- In this video, you'll learn how to breathe when swimming.
This swimming tutorial shows beginners an important step in learning how to swim. Breathing correctly is one of the most important steps to overcome a fear of water and also to swim efficiently.
Be sure to check out the other videos in this chapter of the Overcoming a Fear of Water Program here: www.sikana.tv/...
Remember that if your head is underwater, you'll want to be exhaling. This maximises the time you have to inhale once your head is above water. Practice breathing when staying still to help you get the hang of it!
This video was created in partnership with Decathlon, Sikana's partner for the Sports Program, as well as Audrey Bouillé, a fully-qualified lifeguard and Pierrick le Floch a professional swimming coach, who provided their expertise on the topic.

It's difficult for me to inhale, i end up drinkin water 😂. Im a beginner
Ergid I am not a beginner I am ultra 6 but still inhale water 😠
Same
Ergid lol im intermediate and i take in water
Khang Huynh ur the idiot. He's saying when he inhales above water he accidentally ends up taking water in his mouth.
Khang Huynh on a scale of 1- Khan Huynh, how would you rate the most stupidest thing on the world a human ever said? I was a begginer back then, and i was learning breathing, of course i inhales over the water, dumbass, now It's not a problem because i know how to rotate during beeathing. Next time don't mess with someone who you don't know. K doe? Think before expressing, you can end up saying sh*t, rather than opinion
After 7 years of so many swimming start and stops, it took me today to learn this perfectly 🙏
Same here. Happened to me last night 😃 Aha!
My dumb teacher says to breathe in the water but j just end up choking and hes like "like that" I think he wants to kill me but now I have proof hes wrong
Hahahahahaah
finally someone talking about breathing with mouth / nose. They always say that I need to just breathe 😅
All beginner drink and inhale water.
Ok
I feel like my body gets triggered underwater or something. Like I try to exhale underwater with my mouth but somehow I always panic and accidentally breathe with my nose(cuz Imma nose breather and Idk how to swim) and water gets in there ...IT HURTS MY NOSE SO MUCH IT FEELS LIKE IT'S BURNING ,PLUS I COUGH LIKE CRAZY ✋😭😭 ~LeDrowningTeen
Jelly of ppl who can swim, including the 2 year olds who have more skill than me😂😂
Have you tried to wear a nose clip? Don't worry - you're experience a common problem and you will be able to overcome it if you keep trying :) Let us know how you progress, we hope the video helps!
Yup , I went into exactly the same thing .. I even imagined that it was because I'm having problems with my nose .. but it turned out that I was mistaking .. just keep trying as Sikana said .. do it step by step and you will get it .. Good luck :)
lolllllllllllll
i had this problem to but look at me now passed the navy seals buds :) everything is possible±
Musicalblu 13 how old are you?
people who are new to swimming should try breathing excercise outside water because when you opanic your brain tried to intake oxygen through nose and its devastating. try yoga breathing techniques it helped me alot for state level.
This is the single most important idea in swimming which NONE of my swimming tutors really reinforced in me.. They thought it was a given.. My swimming dramatically improved once I understood this cos I was always holdingb my breath under water
Today was my third swimming lesson and iam stuck in the breathing
.. couldnt get it right ... it seems easy but its actually veey hard and i drank tons of water.. i was disappointed by the end of my training
Thanks for commenting Haifa! Breathing is one of the most difficult things to get used to when learning to swim, so don't be discouraged! It will come with practice as you get more comfortable in the water- practice the exercises gradually, at your own pace, and it will be second nature in no time! Do let us know how you get on :)
Veey? You mean very?
Second today and same!
thank god that I’m not the only one
I’m new to swimming and something I thought would be easy get a quick breath is so difficult.
Well i am new to swimming but i feel like my brain doesnt want me to exhale under water like during the frist 1 or 2 breaths i am ok but then its like when you have your head out of the car and the fast air doesnt let you breathe what i can do for this
Thanks for a great question. Really keep practising the exercises at the end of this video. Try exhaling underwater without swimming or moving - just hold onto the side of the pool. Then practise making the head and arm movements but still remaining still. Then once you're comfortable with that, try puttng it all together whilst moving forwards. We really recommed you check out our full program on this topic - www.sikana.tv/en/sport/getting-comfortable-in-the-water - it's free on our website and could really help you. Please let us know if it does...we'd be so glad to hear it! Please subscribe for more videos
me how do i go underwater without water going in you ears im not comfortable if my ears are underwater😨
Thanks for commenting Arwen, you could try wearing a swimming cap or ear plugs to stop water getting into your ears :) Hope you enjoyed the video!
Sikana English thx
thx
Thank you for the tips and how you clearly describe it.
I can't wait to try it.
Did you try it?
Let us know how it went! ;)
I think bro died while trying it 😂
We lost him
Does anyone else eyes burn seeing people under water
Kylan Kyles yeah
Get goggles it's a life saver!
It's because of chlorine
Yes but not with goggles lol 😆
Ye
I was afraid to get under the water and the panic caused me to inhale water. So I used a nose clip in the beginning. Within a couple of weeks I got used to the sensation to take off the nose clip. I still use swimmer snorkel to acclimate getting in the water.
علحسللغاخببسهبب
I'm the same. The fear of inhaling the water is enough to make me trip and make mistakes such as inhaling water!! I might try a nose clip because I really want to be able to do this.
That sounds awesome, lot of people who can swim still don't know how to breath
SportsPlus thats true am a pro swimmer and i have no fear of water but i never use my nose i know thats a proplem but i cant get used to it i just use nose clip
How do you INHALE sufficiently when you turn your head to the side and open your mouth all so briefly, doing the crawl - and NOT accidentally swallow or breathe in water - and choke or drown? That's always a fear I have. Looking at people swimming the crawl, the INTAKE of air seems way too short to maintain energy.
Learn float on your back,2,learn to swim freestyle with your head out 3,mix these styles to swim longer while resting on floating
@@aokarmy8547 IOW, when INHALING using the CRAWL, float on your SIDE while opening your mouth wide - LONG ENOUGH to get all the air you need, RIGHT?
Try taking smaller breaths. you can also try using a kickboard
I'm in the process of learning this now. Adult beginner swimmer..1st week in and its so much to do all at once.. flutter kick, rotate torso while alternating arms, coordinate breathing, oh and don't forget to relax 🏊♀️ just have to be patient with myself.
@@iamtracywilson Hey, Did you learn swimming completely?
I'm so bad in breathing under the water that I've been kicked out of the pool. They say I drunk 30 cubic meter and the pool is almost empty.
😂😂
just pee it back
i clicked on this hoping that i could learn to ACTUALLY breathe constantly under the water lmao 😂
same
Thank you with all my heart. After asking so many swimmers for so many years, with them always saying try to breathe..today is the first time your video taught me how to do it right..Thank you so much!!
It’s quite difficult for me because I have shortness of breath ALOT and so I try to find a breathing technique that will help with it, does anyone have any tips or techniques when in the water?
Did you learn swimming completely?
I also have the problem of shortness of breath but my only suggestion for you is "do it slowly, don't be in haste". I am swimming from past two months and without any coach, still i managed to learn this skill. All Glory to God.
Oxygen: reads title
Oxygen has left the chat
I find it it much harder to breath *out* than in, will try the standing practice, good tip!
Hey, Did you learn swimming completely?
Today was my third day of swimming and I swam 30 m without inhaling...I feel I could do more but I end up inhaling water ...
Btw my 1st and 2nd day I used to rotate in water while taking a push with most of times my belly upwards after rotating 180 degree.I think breathing is one of the most important things in swimming...
Hey, Did you learn swimming completely?
when i tried to breath inside the water the water goes inside my nose ^^
Thanks for this.Am a beginner...I end up drinking almost 4 litres of water from the swimming pool😋
You are welcome, but note that it's probably not a very good idea to be drinking pool water !
Sikana English it’s ok it’s disinfected water I drink it all the time especially if I am really thirsty
@@Prawnchowmein no, chlorine is bad for you.
@@Prawnchowmein all the filth of 100s of people, I'm assuming its a public pool
@@ilanzatonski8826you forgot urine😂
the problem is when ever try to breath i swallow the water through my nose although breathing from the mouth.
Does anyone else in the UA-cam have a similar problem? Hopefully someone else who has seen the video could help you with some advice!
i swam using nose clip today and it went very well
Mohamed Abdelhalim i try not to breath in 1 min but i fail
I swim regularly 30-40 lanes continues front crawl at a time for the past year. I'm a relative beginner. I noticed in the first few months I would regularly get heart ache after 25 lanes or so and had to rest while not otherwise not exhausted. I could not explain this as I don't get this when jogging etc. Then I saw a clip that said you should only breathe out through your nose underwater because otherwise you are at risk of some carbon monoxide poisoning. Since I switched to doing that I have had no more issue, with immediate effect.
I have no trouble inhaling. But exhaling in water is just hard for me
This is what i need help with. Is it my fear or what? Idk why but my exhaling under water kinda stutters during my crawl stroke
same here🤷🏽♀️
Do not follow the advice to exhale both with mouth and nose. It is impossible for me even now behind the desk. You always exhale under water only through your nose then inhale shortly with your mouth. The exhaling prevents water from running into your nose, but you can keep your mouth shut easily, so why you should exhale with your mouth under water remains a mystery to me.
@@Jarek_73 I've heard a lot of people say the same: Exhale with nose only as a beginner, then after a lot of practice you will naturally begin to exhale with both.
Exhale with your nose only, inhale with your mouth only
I can’t swim at all.
I guess I can do the “Rocket Pose” but only for a small period of time.
I guess I’m kinda scared of drowning.
But I will try this out!
YOU JUST HAVE TO BE CALM!!!!!!!!!!!
Please connect me I can translate all your videos into Bengali. I am a professional translator and have been researching on water safety and swimming for the last 3 years. 300 millions of people speak Bangla. And the death rate due to drowning is the highest in Bangladesh and in west Bengal of India.
Today was my brother's birthday party.we went to the pool side when i started to swim people started to video me they asked me how did i know how to swim . Thank you very much .
Hey, sikkana I'm beginner I'm little bit confused while breathing.. My coach aks me to exhale air through nose only.. But I found difficult to exhale through nose only. In this video you showed to exhale through both nose and mouth... Which one is The right way for exhaling only through nose... Or mouth.... Or with nose and mouth both simentaneously.
Anything is ok for exhaling. But for inhaling, mouth is better
Thanks a lot for such a nice technique. it helps very much to me while swimming.
JUST BREATHE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Won't you sink if you exhale..
No 😂😂😂
Tried exhaling through nose...something greenish yellow substance came out😐🤣
😱DID YOU JUST USE YOUR MOUTH TO BREATH UNDERWATER???
WE USE NOSE NOT MOUTH
NOW THERE IS SALIVA ON THE POOL...
Luxurious03 there’s pee in the pool too, saliva is the least of the problem. People can’t afford to walk 8 metres to the friggn bathroom for some reason.
look easy but its not..very hard for me..
Thanks this video for teaching . Now am better than before
I'm 15 years old and dont know how to swim well and I think its because I'm afraid of drowning but I also did not knoe about this I'm hoping this will help me 🤞🏻
I m learning, we are practicing leg movement so much still drown, while in all vedios trainer does only breathing and hand movements
“Always inhale through the mouth”. I can’t count how many times I’ve inhaled water breathing through my nose and then panicking 😅 I soon learned to begin taking breaths with only my mouth. I can totally agree with this 👍
what about your lungs?
inhaled water by lungs isn't drowning?
Just buy a full face mask it allows you to breathe underwater. That's probably why I can't swim
“Over to you”, thanks, wish me luck 🍀
I always fear that water will get up my nose so I fear I might drown
I exhale above water and inhale under water. It works for me
lol
I know how to keep water from going in my nose, but it appears that I have trouble breathing bubbles out of my nose and mouth.
CJ in GTA already teach me hahahaha
so in short all inhaling & exhaling is done through the mouth whether above the water or under the water. Thats not so hard except in the deep end.
How do you exhale from both your mouth and nose? I can't do both lol
라사 u can use ur nose only tho
This was extremely helpful! You answered every question I had in my brain while I am swim training. Me: "no, you breath in your nose, no wait, hold your breath under water then breath out, wait, no .... lol" so, THANK YOU! -Ebay
You're welcome
😂😂😂
What if the water sticks to your face?
amazing_dude .. you have a VERY sticky face my dude.
I was able to hold my breath for the all video time
Breathing out with mouth, nose or both, or depending in style we are swimming.??
This video is very helpful to ne because im a swimmer too. Thank you so much that you make this video
My thinks is I’m scared water will come into my mouth and I drink the water and it gets in my nose too then what will happen is I may get sick because some pools have bacteria in them
Aw man I thought I was going to learn to be a mermaid.
KiwiTheKlutz I Don’t Know me too, hahahah
when i inhale i end up drinking water and not breath. i think it’s because i don’t turn around enough
i mean, i never even tried doing this, but my friend tried it and it worked! i will definitely try this!
You are beautiful just the way you look! To everyone! You are beautiful! You do not need adjustments to your beautiful body to look beautiful! Beauty is on the inside! You are beautiful outside just the way you look right now! You are important and you do have worth and meaning! Jesus loves you!
idk why but I breath or not water automatically goes in my nose.😟
maybe my nose is big😂😂
It will always go in your nose - whether you have a big nose or not - but the important thing is that you're not inhaling through your nose since this will cause you to cough and splutter. Are you breathing in water through your nose when you swim?
I got used to breathing out through the nose only. Is there a specific reason on why breathing out through both the nose and mouth is better? Thanks :)
Great question - it's just the the quickest way of evacuating air from your lungs so you're ready for the next breath! If you like our videos and our channel then help us grow by sharing our videos :)

Great information, Thank you.
I will try this tonight.
i struggle with breathing while swimming since I do singing and I'm used to taking really deeep breaths and exhaling for a long time :/ the short breaths are not enough for me and I have to stop to breath properly.. any tips please?
Hi there, great question! It's important to keep exhaling as you swim, rather than exhaling quickly just before you take a breath- this will help you swim better as it releases tension in your body, and also helps your swimming form. While it may not initially seem very natural to breathe like this, it's worth investing some time to practice your breathing carefully as it will help you progress in your swimming. It will soon become second nature! Hope this helps, let us know how you get on :)
when i exhale under water, do i hv to do it continuously I mean shd the bubbles come in a continuous flow or in short spurts ?
I always feel pressure on chest when submerged in water till neck. Its also very hard to breathe. Cardiologist cleared me of any diseases.
take your hand and clip on your nose take water glasses and go under water you able to swim or straight your hands and swim in water if you want to swim easily it is not that difficult
Very good video, Now I know how to swim!
I take swimmung class the trainer says not to blow bubbles and just to hold ur breath and then head up and breate but when I put my head up it does not give me enought time to breath
What is the swimming method at beginning called
Its so difficult to breathe and kick and try to keep your lower body floating! Im stuck in this 🤬
I'm not sure why, but I have the most difficult time breathing out my nose. It's like the water gets stuck. I'm a beginner, what am I doing wrong?
My brother Loyiso he win a AWARD
Decathlon’s swimming goggles are very poor quality. Don’t buy it.
For a steady pace long swim: How much air should you inhale at the beginning, just before you start to swim? Is it a deep breath like for diving, or just a normal one, or maybe it does not matter? I almost always start with a lot of air in my lungs but I have problems with managing it during the swim. What is the proper way to do it? Also during the swim: do you try to take maximum air into your lungs, so they feel full? Thanks!
Thanks for your question Tom! You want to breathe in such a way that you're comfortable and that your stroke isn't interrupted. To maintain a fluid motion, you should keep one lens of your goggles (if you're wearing them) in the water when breathing. To start with, you may want to breathe every other stroke, but with practice, you'll soon be able to reduce this to one stroke in three (alternating sides each time). In short, you need to inhale enough air that you're comfortable maintaining your stroke! Hope this helps :)
I can breathe out from my mouth but not from my nose, am I doing to wrong generally asking feel free to laugh
My brother is just starting to swim and I don't know how to explain properly so I'll show him this video and tomorrow morning when we're at practice he can try. Ta for the video

That short time is not enough to me ..i also feel i wasn't getting any air in. So in few seconds i am sinking ..not enjoying at the moment
I need to learn how.
Just started learning swimmingYou videos are really helpful..
Is the exhale in the water a controlled one ? Do we exhale completely ? . The moment I start exhaling I get that sinking feeling . I breathe every 3 strokes . So when I exhale it should be for that period of 3 strokes when I am in water . PL suggest the best breathing pattern for relaxed long distance swimming. Thanks.
I hold my breath atleast 20 -30 sec
Thanks a lot for this video i learnt swiming by myself but i knew i am doing some mistake now i got what mistake i did i think i can improve my swimming with this video
Who can't breathe properly when you are not actually swimming? 😅
I tried this and the air would not go Down toy lungs but simply stayed in mouth.
If you find it hard to breath out in a body of water start off trying to do it in the shower
Ooh yeah.. My mouth and nose already tired 😴 😴
Hi PLEASE HELP. I really can’t get to grips with my breathing technique so I just boughta full set of oxygen diving tanks and mask but my local Swimming pool said I am not allowed to bring it in there, any suggestions?
that's a good drill, especially for the beginners, thank you
You're welcome! ;)
Should I inhale after each stroke or after two strokes in free style swimming ? Why do I feel exhausted after a while if I inhale after two or three strokes ? However I can swim for long at a stretch only if I swim very slowly ? Is it for my age as I am now 77 or for my taking strokes incorrectly ? Please let me know your advice .
I just started taking lessons and I was told to exhale out of the nose or mouth. Why do you suggest exhaling out of the nose and mouth at the same time? Thanks.
Great question thanks for asking. We recommend exhaling through both as it is perhaps the quickest way to get rid of the air in your lungs whilst underwater. If you prefer exhaling through either the mouth or the nose but not both, then that's most likely fine too - the important thing is that you are exhaling constantly whilst underwater.
