      They would have won without those stars... They would have won without any of their stars... You win with the nuts and bolts players... The stars are icing on the cake but the cake is made out of their two grind lines... Without the depth you don't win- ask the core 4 Maple Leaf's... But they do need Stevie Y to win, i admit that. But he was a star who played like he was a grinder- that's what made him special... Crosby is the closest i've seen to him since!

      Detroit was scouting players in Europe before most other franchises did. In 1989, the Detroit GM at the time said who is the best 18 year old in the world and to draft him, that was Sergei Fedorov at the time.
      Picks like Datsyuk and Zetterberg who were overlooked since they were big (muscle wise) prospects. Detroit has a chief European scout named Hakan Andersson who found these players and recommended to management to draft them. Detroit’s management actually trusts Andersson and his prospect recommendations.

    Nice showing by red wings legends! One that I really hoped to have seen even as an honorable mention would have been Konstantinov. At 221st he became an above average solid defenseman with a bit of a scoring touch. That limo crash really took a seemingly dominant career away from him. I still wonder to this day how many more cups could we have won with Vladdy at the blue line. He was taken too soon.

    Doug Zmolek did actually play more than a handful of games in the NHL. 467 over ten seasons in all. Minnesota drafted him, but he started with San Jose in 1992-93, possibly acquired in the expansion draft. Then he went to Dallas, then the Kings, and finally Chicago. Fairly stable defenseman, but he was more of a tough guy so he played less and less as fighting started to taper off.

    • @derapalum6692
      @derapalum6692 2 місяці тому

      Yeah there is two way of looking that pick. Zmolek was bit of reach on that draft compared to expectation and looking in hindsight ton of better players drafted after him. Not a good pick.
      But from another view. He was fairly close of being top 10 D picked in that draft. And almost half of the first round picks did not even end up being NHL players. So as second round pick he would have been good pick. So not a horrendous blunder.

    I'm mostly going off reddit, but seeing how they talk about Mathesson, Anderson, Harris; Weber, Danault and Price before the run, Drouin when he was here, Reinbacher and Slafkovsky when the picks were made, I think there is still plenty of vitriol

      @doaftheloaf 2 місяці тому

      i don't wanna crap on matheson too much, we still need to get something for him. it's just that he plays efense. that's not a typo. anderson...last year was awful in every way, and in general he's a guy with all the tools and no toolbox. harris doesn't deserve any hate - he's a solid bottom pair dman a team would be glad to have. he keeps his game simple and plays smart. the problem in montreal, with an overabundance of young dmen, is that he is expendable and the most logical to trade.
      danault was miscast as a 1C or 2C here. he can get 40-50 points a year, but on a good team he should be a shutdown 3C. that's not his fault we couldn't draft a scoring center to save our life. i hope michael hage doesn't fall victim to this curse. any hate price and weber got was completely based on their contracts alone.
      reinbacher...hughes was drafting by position, not by BPA. that could bite him, but i see reinbacher as a seabrook or mcdonagh type. he'll be the type of player every team needs in order to win in the playoffs. the habs will stick him next to hutson and he'll mostly be there to cover for lane's adventures.
      slaf had a lackluster rookie season, but he didn't look ready and then he got hurt. this last season, he took a gigantic step forward. now everyone loves him. don't write off your prospects as busts when they haven't even hit 20 yet.

    1989 was a _12_ round draft, in fact. I believe it was 12 rounds right up through '94 before it was dropped to 9 after the lockout (dropping to the modern 7 round draft after 2005, of course).
    As for the draft itself, I'd put Draper ahead of Drake and probably pick Marshall, Haller or Zmolek ahead of Thornton (maybe Woolley, even?) at 21.
    Drake always seemed like a poor-man's Draper until he signed that god-awful contract in St Louis (4 years, 9M total - was a different time, lol). He never really looked good as a top-6 with them and pretty much always performed best as a 4th line energy guy.
    Thornton's career wasn't much to look at, and defensemen will always be more valuable. I'd probably go with Haller there as the better overall talent, but Woolley did play longer and was more offensively gifted. Zmolek did play almost 500 games, but retired at 29. Was a good mobile defenseman with a bit of a mean streak, but didn't really have any offensive upside. Still not sure if he retired from injuries or not, but seems likely the case I think. Can't see why no one would be interested in a big defenseman under 30 that could skate well (relatively) at that time. Especially since the league was expanding.

    Habs fan here, the reason for the Brisebois hate was Quebec sports media (both French and English) building him up as the next great defender and then blaming him for not reaching an impossibly high standard. I was at the Molson center for one of the games where some fans booed but me and my friend started calling out these morons and at least some did shut up. Patrice was a good second pairing defenseman for most of his career, I liked him a lot. I also liked Gainey calling these fans jealous and yellow.

      brisebois was booed because he didn't retaliate when trent mclaren destroyed zednik in the playoffs vs boston. he just skated over him and did nothing.

      @parjf 2 місяці тому

      @@chrisbelos2834 The game I was at was in 1996, years before Zednik got badly hurt in 2002. Brisebois had been booed off and on for years. You're a little late.

    As good as the Red Wings draft in 89 was, its crazy to think they almost drafted Bure in the 5th round instead of McCosh (9 games played in the NHL.) They were a little too uneasy with the eligibility questions to pick Bure in the 5th, but were "definitely" going to pick him in the 6th if he was still available. Vancouver took him a few spots ahead of the Wings. One of the few rather dumb decisions, in hindsight, the Wings made in that draft.
