You were fortunate to have train 20 running on time. The Crescent has a history of having the worst on time performance of any long haul trains. Delays of 2-4 hours were once a very common occurrence.
I remember 20 years ago in college, the Crescent was the 0 dark 30 night train through that part of NC. I took it once to Charlottesville, then had a Greyhound Amtrak Thruway bus a couple of hours later to Dulles Airport.
@@nb2008nc Northbound, Amtrak padded the schedule by 4 hours and the Crescent still falls behind just after Slidell, LA. Between Gastonia and Charlotte there is 87 minutes now and it used to be 42 minutes.

I did my best to make the transition as seamless as possible, which helps it feel shorter than it actually is. I’m currently in talks with another company about future sponsorships, so hopefully there will be more to come in the next few months.
Oh, I was hoping next week you'd do another crazy journey; something like NYC to Boston via the Lakeshore Limited out and back but maybe even Amtrak wouldn't recommend that. It's amazing with the refurb of Amulet cars, they didn't lower the seat pitch as it seems beyond generous.
idk why they moved the Crescent from its 230am departure. i used to take the Carolinian down to charlotte to pick up my sister and then waited for the Crescent to take us back north.
Don't give him up to the afterlife, I hear he got up, dusted himself up, smoothened his bumps and went back to advertising the "café du jour". Made in America!! 🦅🦅🦅
Wow, the most ridiculous Amtrak trip I took was Boston to New York by way of Albany-Rensselaer which was 8 hours instead of the usual 4 hours on the Northeast Regional, but it actually ended up being cheaper than the direct train would've been. Funny enough, I got to ride in a roomette with my friend who was riding all the way to Chicago, so for the price of a coach ticket I was able to get all the perks of first class travel including lounge access at South Station, a complimentary meal service (including an alcoholic beverage) and of course, I took a shower on the train. Also my favorite item from the Amtrak Cafe Car Menu is the Santa Fe Chicken Panini. It's really good!
Howdy! I highly recommend it just for the laughs! It’s likely a much nicer experience if you get a room on both legs, but there’s something about traveling in coach that makes the whole experience just that much more ridiculous.
Hello! I cannot wait for this video to start! Unfortunately I can’t be here for the premiere because I will have my 1st softball practice of the season! @Lonestar Trip Reports, keep up the great work!
Interesting route. Congrats on 10k. I took the Crescent in 2019 Charlotte to NYC but the Carolinian on the return. It looks like they revised the Crescent NB schedule, a better but still inconvient 5:30am departure from Charlotte. But probably helps with on-time performance as it was always late getting into Charlotte. I wish they’d bring back full service dining on eastern routes.
Thanks! The new schedule is interesting for sure. I would have preferred if they kept the old one, as I would have been able to board the northbound around 2am and get into DC or NYC in the morning to still have a full day there. As for eastern dining, Amtrak just added full dining to both silver services, so my guess is that the rest are to follow suit in the coming months.
@@LonestarTrips I would have walked into diner and demanded to be fed - a bit more aggressive than our passive sit-ins during the 60’s. 👊🏾👴🏾✌🏾 As I’ve told you before I will not ride Amtrak long distance trains until coach passengers can get a decent meal in the diner…although I don’t even ride long haul coach any more and this retired conductor can ride free.

Much appreciated! It was a ridiculous ride, but one I knew I had to share. I plan on doing more like this in the future, so it’s good to know people enjoy them.
Only a railfan would do that! I'm also surprised that Amtrak would give that as an option. IMO, you would have been better off making the switch in Washington rather than Alexandria; at least you wouldn't have had to brave the rain to get food, and apparently there was enough time to do this.
So I guess this is kinda like the opposite of the video in New Haven where instead of taking a comedically short trip, you took an unnecessarily long trip? Haha, good stuff!
To be fair to Amtrak the majority of the rails in the US are owned by the rail companies and are built in such a way that make them practically useless for passengers rail service (unless you enjoy having to wait outside of cargo rail yards possibly for hours demanding that slow moving cargo trains move their butts faster and stop sitting on the switch) and Amtrak’s lucky enough to be able to upgrade and replace the infrastructure they do own (as they’re currently phasing in new engine and passenger cars). Plus Amtrak can’t do anything if the cargo trains decide to block traffic or some idiot ignores all warnings and drives onto the tracks in an effort to beat the train (which is currently PISSING off Brightline something fierce).
Crazy you mention the Staples Mill Road station. I'm actually planning to take a train from Newport News to Staples Mill Road sometime in the next month or so. It's actually easier to do that and go to the Apple Store in Richmond than it is to drive to Virginia Beach and go to the Apple Store there.
coffee cake being offered as breakfast makes me chuckle. like yeah coffee is in the name but thats just because we used to have afternoon coffees and such
That’ll hopefully change next year. Amtrak is working to reopen the Mobile to Jacksonville route, which would allow passengers to make that journey without heading north.

Yep, it’s a real problem. Amtrak’s updated offerings has helped this, but it’s still a major issue for coach passengers.
