He comes across that way but then he doesn't treat his customers well at all. He sells a course with a "money-back guarantee" and then doesn't honor it.
This was great! I love how Daniel treats it like a group conversation. Very natural, and it makes perfect sense. Great chess culture. And I’m so happy to see danya featured here, and to hear all his thoughts and stories. I think John Bartholomew would be a great guest. He’s like a GM in an IM body lol. That is all
Agreed, this is among the most engaged I've ever been while listening to any podcast. Danya is super interesting and a great communicator to begin with, and the dynamic between these three is stellar. Would love to hear them all go off for a full episode of just random tournament stories, and a full episode just on chess improvement, and a full episode just on chess culture/the shift toward online chess/the future of chess ... and I'm sure they could come up with more interesting things to discuss too!
There are not enough superlatives for Daniel’s ability to teach principles and make it captivating, entertaining at the same time. I get a full on self esteem boost every time I watch one of his videos. Pure gold as a resource for not just chess but I would point teachers of ANY subject matter to his channel. His skill in this area quite incredible!
"Doing cartwheels in a swamp" is a great phrase. Love Danya's commentating, he naturally has great use language, both interesting vocabulary and inventive analogies
Danya is absolutely the best guest to have on the podcast. I love listening to all of the stories, history, chess and everything in between. Great memories from the stream about Daniel's thesis covering Salem trials came back. Can't wait for the part 2 (and 3, 4, 5, 6...)
About mental health; to anyone who's ever been a victim of bullying / hate / violence because of their appearance, gender, orientation, race : DO NOT ever let a hateful notion 'there's something wrong with me' sink in. Trust me, it's a recipe for self hatred and compulsive anxieties later on. When we suffer and we need a break, it's only natural to think: maybe if I wasn't 'different', if I was 'normal' I would be accepted. No, haters will always find something else to prey upon. I've always had kinda androgynous look, which was a fuel for bullies when I was growing up. I embraced it, used it to my advantage in my acting / modeling career, I was almost the face of Leon in these new Resident Evil games :) Remember; There's never anything wrong with you.
Terrific episode! This conversation with Danya was so entertaining and insightful... really stands out as one of your best, which says A LOT because your pod is without a doubt the best chess pod there is. Y'all kill it every time, every episode. You've set the bar high and you keep clearing it and raising it some more!
Fun discussion. Danya is a great communicator, and Fabi as always has some really interesting insights himself. Thanks to Cristian for helping to put this all together. The Candidates and hopefully Fabi's trip as challenger to the next WC can't come soon enough.
I'm 47 years old and I learned to play chess when I was 19 or 20, so my first chess experiences where in the mid to late 90s. I used to go to local chess clubs and I really enjoyed that, we'd take the games to a local iHop or Waffle House once the club kicked us out. In 1997, I got a Sega Saturn, which had a modem attachment. My second controller slot had an adapter and a keyboard and I used to play chess on sites like Caissa. Soon after, I got a 486 computer and used to play on PlayChess, ICC and FICs. At some point, I started playing chess exclusively on my phone, maybe the early 2000s and since then there is probably only a handful of days I haven't played a game online (no longer OTB). I'm around expert/candidate master level now and I exclusively play three minute games (no increment) because of the rise in cheating (another topic all together). Regarding the conversation about OTB and online chess, I've noticed that I am exactly the opposite of the GMs on the C-squared podcast, it now feels weird for me to play OTB, I feel kind of out of sorts. However, on my phone I am an absolute speed demon and I am more intuitive in my style, sort of the same thing Fabiano was saying but with opposite interfaces. Coming from Gen X, that maybe makes me a bit of an anomaly, more like the younger generation. It is an interesting conversation and I have wondered if this is a psychological thing or a matter of perception and what we get used to, glad ya'll brought it up. On a side note, and I know everyone is getting tired of this subject, but I was basically learning with the rise of online chess and I can tell you without doubt (at least in my own mind), cheating has grown exponentially in the last twenty years. Other players that I know, that played in the early days of online chess, have similar experiences and feelings. I feel like the problem is way bigger than most people think and that top players experience it less because they have more visibility. Example, I created three different accounts on LiChess and made speedruns to try and get to 2100. Every time, I burn through everyone until I get to the 1900-2000 level players, then I have to grind like a mofo, and then when I get to 2000+ the players get easier. I noticed this by chance at first and then I tried the experiment a few more times, with the same results. I thought, okay, maybe this is my own psychological impediment but then I looked at the accuracy scores of the 1900-2000 rated players vs 2000+, not even close. I know platforms have a lot riding on this not being the case but, unfortunately, I think they are probably aware and are trying to scramble until they get a more foolproof solution against cheating. On a side note, I really enjoyed following chess engine development in the late 90s. I am a software developer and data analyst in my career but I used to follow advancements in early engines, their pruning methods, tablebases....all of that fun stuff. I really enjoyed working with Crafty (shout out to Robert Hyatt!) and my all time favorite chess engine, Fruit! Do some analysis with fruit someday and compare it to other engines, it's a truly interesting engine with surprisingly modern evaluation methods. Love the podcast, keep up the good work, more interviews!
One of the most interesting things about professional chess community to me is the unique aspect of how long players have known and played each other. Like hearing each of your perspectives from tournaments when you were kids or every time I see Garry and Magnus talking now as adults and thinking back to Magnus as this small kid, drinking his orange juice, while Garry stares in disbelief at the board. 😊 Easily a top episode if not my favorite so far!! 🤍
There is the day that I learned to play chess, THEN the day that I LEARNED to play chess, then the day that I ACTUALLY learned to play chess, then the day that I learned that I had only actually STARTED to learn to play chess.
Damn didn't expect this. Imo dddddddanya is the best chess youtuber/streamer. I owe so much of my understanding and improvement as a player to him and his speedruns. I'm sure many people feel the same. I'm gonna have a blast in the next 90 minutes listening to this.
This was such a pleasant podcast that I didn't even feel that 1.5 h passed. I love all three of you and I can't wait for part 2, 3, 4 and as many as you guys want to make with Danya. Thank you so much!
Listened to this on my podcatcher today and had to come here just so I could comment and compliment the episode. Danya is always such a classy charismatic guy, and it was really fun hearing him engage in a full conversation rather than just teaching or commentating. I agree with everyone saying we need a part two! I'd love to hear you guys go off about random tournament stories/memories, and about the shifting world of/future of chess, and about chess improvement, and about teaching, and about all sorts of things. This was one of the best episodes of ANY podcast (in ANY topic niche) I've ever listened to, and felt like it was over in a flash. My ADHD brain has never been so engaged with something I was only consuming through audio lol. Please please have Danya back soon and often!
Loved hearing about his decision to change career paths and become a chess coach and streamer. Very insightful and inspirational words of wisdom. Danya is the Man!!
Danya seems like such a nice guy and I'd rate him in the top 3 of online chess teachers. And it's fun to see the obvious friendship and goodwill between these 3 based on so much shared interest and experience.
Great podcast guys. Naroditsky is my current favorite chess UA-camr to learn from. He explains stuff clearly, and at just the right speed for me. Good to see that C-Squared is increasing in subscribers.
Hi guys! Still alive, but mainly coaching. One day I should join you, I still remember Fabiano when he was 10 years old running in Mondariz while we played a tournament... A lot of funny stories with both :).
Danya is my favourite chess content creator, such an amazing teacher for us common folk. Really knows how to get concepts through to you. Love that guy
This is my favorite episode so far. Danya is thoughtful and articulate, and his UA-cam channel is indispensable for someone trying to improve their game. Keep up the great work!
I really appreciate the mental health section, I am a 2000 rated player over the board and find chess to be extremely stressful much to the extent where it sometimes feels like ptsd. its more like a fuel for negativity which keeps me going on trying despite the terrible losses or bad events I've had as for me I feel like if I don't achieve a title then I haven't amounted to anything in chess. i may be 2500 online or 2200 OTB blitz but none of that matters until I finally get my rating to 2200 so then I would feel truly happy seeing one of my most important goals in life to be fulfilled. i connect with many of the things you've stated and just feel like quitting chess competitively except for speed chess as that's not stressful but its great to hear it from someone who has always played chess at a very high level. you are awesome danya and as usual I appreciate you Fabi as you were always a chess heroes in my eyes when I was low rated. I love these topics and have always been appreciating these podcasts since the start stay safe and play chess happy ciao friends
could take away from the point of this video being that its a podcast - as a lover of chess that would be cool but if i were here to spectate it wouldnt be the greatest thing maybe putting it at the end would be cool
While talking would be weird and uncomfortable.. Especially bearing in mind that this is a podcast after all, and many people are probably just listening. IMO a blitz game at the end would be a nice chessy touch though.
the point about seeing positions differently just by changing your physical viewpoint rings true for me. flipping the board when playing online will SO often lead to me seeing something i hadnt noticed before, even though its the exact same position. just pattern recognition i guess. neat interview!
Great episode! I love the assertation that because shorter formats are growing in popularity, it doesn't mean that longer formats are dying out. I loved the Tata Steel commentary and commentary of games of that length for so many reasons; I can listen and follow it casually and give it my focus when something happens, I can hear an in depth analysis of a position in real time and learn why certain moves make more sense than others, and being one of the ADHD kids, it's one of the few things I can slow down and concentrate on without losing focus.
Uploaded 4 hrs ago and already over 10,000 views? Man!! Good stuff, boys. I remember when you guys were just starting out. I wonder if it's Danya running the algo up, or yall?
Yeah for real, he's one of the smoothest conversationalists I've ever seen in action, whether on the pod or in commentary or in any context. I haven't watched that Charisma on Command channel in forever and ever (they've been a little cringe for me now and then lol) but listening to this pod had me thinking that it'd be super fascinating to see them analyze how charismatic Danya is and how he's so good at keeping conversations balanced and engaging and flowy
I am amazed by these guy's trajectory in Chess... I started young too but I never had the disciple to get into competitive chess. Lately, thanks to Danya's speedruns I returned to Chess, hopefully I'll hit 1500 soon!
I think there is a big aspect to chess and mental health which has been overlooked in the discussion in this video. People who start feeling hatred towards chess I think don't feel that way because of their wins or losses, (sure a recent streak of losses might speed things up). I think they feel that way mainly because they have come to realisation at some point that they are probably missing out on something else in life and not only are they going to start hating themselves, but also the activity itself for all the time which they had "sunken" into it. And I think the same holds true not only for chess but many other games and possibly even competitive sports or even studying.
Great stuff guys. The best podcast yet. Love the anecdotes. Respect to the great Fabi who can set his own great career aside and listen with interest to others.
Yeah, Fabi's balance of exceptional knowledge/experience and quiet chill humility makes him so interesting and makes him a particularly fantastic podcast host for sure
What an AWESOME person and gifted Chess protege. The World is a BETTER place because of Daniel. I absolutely support and admire this gentle giant of chess 👋!
It's been great having Fabi stream and learn he's human with a sense of humour & a talented communicator. He came across previously as a bit of a cold fish TBH.
Great interview! As a fan of chess part of me kind of wants to see Danya break through 2700 and play with the big boys in classical chess. But at the same time I completely understand why he doesn't want to play classical chess. I've never done it but it sure sounds pretty intense. I can't imagine playing chess 3-5 hours every day for 11 out of 14 days in a big tournament. Even in my local area the tournaments are like 8 hours long. Whereas online I play maximum 2 hours and usually 10-30 minutes. I find it more fun to be a casual player instead of a competitive player but I've got huge respect for the competitors out there who slug it out in these long tournaments or matches.
Probably the best one yet. I could litsen to Danya all day. Being born and raise in Cuba I can relate with Danya when he uses saying in Russia thst sometimes don't make sense in English. Good job boys!
one thing that i find impressive about danya aside from his chess knwoledge and skills of cours is his vocabulary , as a non native english speaker i always enjoy learning new words from danya
Awesome interview!!! Been following Daniel since TQG boom. Amazing watching his climb. First time I saw him he was streaming about some historical story about Ruy Lopez and the origins of that story. He really took off after those days.
I'm barely 1500 but... whenever I had a long chess break, some comedy is in the background to calm my mind in certain situations by laughter and I really don't care about losing but can find joy in every position even if it's lost, I win points like crazy. When I start wanting to be better, I get worse.
Nakamura is no longer burdened with financial burdens as his pockets are filled. That releases a lot of pressure when he plays. Being free of having to play chess for a living allows him greater creativity and lack of fear.
I can hear Danya talk forever, such a well mannered articulate guest
Indeed. He may be a Standfurd grad, but I still give him two thumbs up.

Naroditsky is such a cool dude. I didn't get into chess until fairly recently - he's made learning the game a great experience

Didn’t tought about Danya as a guest but it’s great to see him here! Im excited for the episode
It's been great having Fabi stream and learn he's human with a sense of humour & a talented communicator. He came across previously as a bit of a cold fish TBH.
Amazing interview - thanks so muchhh - will be there a SECOND part you say?? :D :D :D
I thought this could be the greatest interview ever, and I was not disappointed.
Danya is a gift to the chess community!
danya has a very plesant personality , the best chess commentator , period
This and the Nakamura interviews were so fkin amazing. Thank you so much guys for bringing us this content. Keep up the fantastic work.
Probably the best one yet. I could litsen to Danya all day. Being born and raise in Cuba I can relate with Danya when he uses saying in Russia thst sometimes don't make sense in English. Good job boys!
best episode so far! we need more danya stories
Aww man I wish you guys got Danya in person like Levi. Still stoked for this podcast!
one thing that i find impressive about danya aside from his chess knwoledge and skills of cours is his vocabulary , as a non native english speaker i always enjoy learning new words from danya
Everyone has been waiting for Danya to come on! 😍😍
One of my favourite ever thanks so much to all 3 of you
I watched all the videos from Danya's channel and just now I learned that he has an older brother.
We need part II, this was and felt like just like an intro
Interesting and relaxing interview. With so much blitz online it is nice to have this relaxed format. Well done all.
Danya ❤. Humble legend
Danya is the Bob Costas and Vin Scully of chess commentating. There is no other!
I'm 100% sure I remember 9/11. I was in 7th grade in 1st period biology. No shot of a false memory there
Awesome interview!!!
Honestly, for me Danya is the most influential chess teacher... period
Nakamura is no longer burdened with financial burdens as his pockets are filled. That releases a lot of pressure when he plays. Being free of having to play chess for a living allows him greater creativity and lack of fear.
DN is such a great instructor. I like his style that makes chess look easy.
That Karpov/Kasparov story is awesome :-)
This is the guest I’ve been waiting for, awesome to see
Oh my lands, I will be watching this entire video on normal speed! Danya is a complete ledge, love my dude! 😍
I"d like to meet Danya. He seems like a guy who could be a genuine good friend.
Cool talk. Danya, the professor!
Great guest! One idea, how about GM Ben Finegold as a guest?
Need to hear more rebellious youth stories from Fabi. The thief story was hella relatable!
1:19:28 For those of us who were not on ICC, can you explain what "Adaptation" was? Danya says he was paired with Adaptation. What is he referring to?
that was Fabi
@@csqpod hahaha!! thanks for explaining!
Cristian’s handle was “Dictator” 😂
Daniel is amazing and so are you! Thanks!
would be interesting to have more interviews focused on "lessons learned as a coach".
