Making of a Monument: Portrait of a Phenomenal Woman

On September 19, 2024, the San Francisco Arts Commission and San Francisco Public Library unveiled a new monument honoring Dr. Maya Angelou for the San Francisco Main Library by artist Lava Thomas.
“Portrait of a Phenomenal Women,” a nine-foot-tall bronze and basalt stone monument in the form of a book, features a portrait and quote of literary artist, civil rights activist, and former San Francisco resident, Dr. Maya Angelou.
