    Great video. If you wondering how they can find those traps in the middle of the ocean, they use a very old technique called "eskwala" in tagalog. They use the mountain tops that seems to be a good a good marker and they must remember how the mountain tops are aligned and positioned when they throw the trap and when they go back to get to those traps they need to reposition those tops again in order to find their traps. And they always travel with a bearing. Good old fishermans technique. The technology sometimes might fail but the mountains and where the sun rise and set will never. Proud fisherman's son here mate. Cheers!

    My uncle is a fisherman somewhere in Mindanao. I went with him one time in the middle of the night for go fishing, we don't have any navigational system... that is why I wondering too, how can he manage to go back home at night and without GPS. I guess the fisherman like him is gifted of the sense of directions,, and this is a gift from our god, so they can live their life abundantly.. that is what I call GPS: the God Positioning System!!

    I knew a guy who fish 5 days away in the east ph sea using only a boat like that and a kitang"one line of nylon with so many baited hooks"stretching a thousand meters long, I remember he even told us a story when he battles a 60-foot waves when a storm caught him. I even remember seeing how big the fishes he caught, so sad nowadays that you'll only see larger fish in the sea waters of ph so far away from the shores.. The government should really regulate fishing and prioritize culturing of marine animals and their habitats for the future!

      Yes over fishing is worldwide now and I know the Philippine government is attempting to manage it however there are 25 million fishermen and it is just so difficult to control and also many other countries like china are illegally fishing in our oceans an the Philippines navy is not bold enough to challenge China.

    I learned a lot from Cebuano Fishermen. I loved the sud-sud net. I almost drown when i was 12 years old practicing my deep sea diving without diving gear. they call it now freediving. It was a Badjao who taught me how to free dive.

      I think they go by "landmarks". I once lost a Ray Ban into the waters and immediately the pumpboat operator scanned the distances and land forms as if triangulating the location. It wasn't very deep waters so I'm guessing he went back for it later.

    • @leolopponen9010

    If some people only knew what some of these families knew on what it takes to support their family. Like you said in the beginning, the weather had been bad for a while and they had to risk this trip to earn money. The day in life for the Philippines is much much different and easy for people to complain about what kind of traps they using that's irrelevant. Great video.👍 also that takes courage to go that far out and the swells were getting that big.

    This was a very good fishing trip. I am an American and I lived in the Philippines for 23 years up until last year. Making a living by fishing in the Philippines is a pretty tough row to hoe. I am sure that I could not do it, but I admire anyone that can do it.

    I spent most of my childhood in Sta Fe (spent 3 years as a kid) and my family is from Madridejos (other side of the island). I lived with a family who’s main trade is fishing. They go out to sea at around past midnight or early dawn to catch “bolinao” (anchovies) and other kinda of fish. As a kid, I’m always curious what happens/how they do these things like casting a net. I’m always afraid of deep waters so I never bothered asking to go with them. I think it’s a risky business with those small wooden boats. I now live in San Antonio, TX-quite a loooong way from where I came from. I have mad respect to these fishermen. I miss home and the family I lived with. Thanks for the awesome video :)

      mg23 as we went out he kept looking back over his shoulder at the only hills showing on Bantayan Island, so some how he has trained himself over the years (he also fished with his father as he grew up) to somehow pin point ocean locations miles out at sea. When we arrived at the fish traps I could not see any of bantayan island.

      To Thomas Kerwin: 'When in Rome, do what Romans do.', in other words, be a Filipino fisherman with no cheating gears like your fish finder. Make sure you wear a life jacket and carry a bolo knife. White dudes are easy prey to the great WHITE sharks there....he hee!

    • @KMacFNP
      @KMacFNP 5 років тому

      @@ab-ew6ee . You didn't read my comment properly. I said (if I may quote myself) "fishing is my hobby", so having a garmin fish finder just makes it easier for me to catch my fish at a shorter time. After a couple of fish (hopefully some yellowfins or skipjacks), I can head home, roast/grill the fish, invite some friends for discussions over seafood and beer. I don't intend to compete with the "real fishermen". And FYI, I am not a "white dude", I am a full blooded Filipino, there are no great white sharks in the Philippines, and he who goes fishing with a bolo is a certified idiot.

    • @myparadiseonbantayanisland9030
      @myparadiseonbantayanisland9030  7 років тому

      I should have called it "Hooked Up Resurrection" ;-). No luck trolling however but it really was a rough day to head out to sea. I did get 1 hit on the way out but it just bent my rod way down then let go when it tasted the hook, so i know something is out there I just need to troll a lot faster to sink the hook on first bite. I may be talking to a boat builder and see what he can build for my fishing needs. Something in the small to medium range at first just to learn where and how to fish, then if that goes well I will build it's big brother boat!

    • @socaloutdoors951
      @socaloutdoors951 7 років тому

      Yesh, no kidding. When I saw the shirt in the video, I looked down to see if I was wearing mine. Trolling speed depends on what's out there. We trolled for tuna between 3 to 5 knots. It will be a challenge to get up to 15 to 20 knots to high speed troll for wahoo.

    Do people that comment in your comment box think that fishing for small fish actually deplete the ocean of fish. Do they have a clue how big the ocean is? Do they know what is a baby fish and what is a natural small fish is? This fishermans fishing technique is so sustainable. The injustice is that this poor man bust it all day for 5 bucks.Thank for sharing.

  • @joelverona2308
    @joelverona2308 7 років тому +2

    The Filipino Fishermen have been long deprived of at least simple technology to improve their Fishing techniques. They don't have a safe and proper boats to use for more productive outings, they don't have proper equipment to utilize to ease their difficulty on rudimentary tools available to them. They didn't even have their own initiative to make sustainable profit, perhaps too contented of what they already have. But I'm not blaming or belittling them. They actually have the ability to rise above from their stagnated situation. The only problem is, they lack solidarity. Most of our fishermen, likes to do thing on their own, without minding the others need to be part of the progress of the whole community. If only our fisher folks pool their resources to create a cooperative style association to improve their economy, they probably can have something more than sustainable and permanent means to overcome hardship. Pool their resources to build bigger boats instead of cut throat like competition using tiny and unsafe boats, they can actually become big player, or even achieve bigger market shares from among other players, and perhaps starts to build more genuine progressive economy by merging their capability and finance to start with.

    • @myparadiseonbantayanisland9030
      @myparadiseonbantayanisland9030  7 років тому +1

      I'm having a boat built for me and I told the builder that I would use more modern technology in my boat and he is very excited about using things such as automatic bilge pumps and electric start motors. The main problem is that the stores are selling such old technology and not offering any new items to improve their safety or productivity. I shop online and find the latest gadgets for my boat.

    • @myparadiseonbantayanisland9030
      @myparadiseonbantayanisland9030  5 років тому +1

      If it had enough diesel fuel it could, however this boat is not in very good shape so every trip is risky business, he has since bought another boat that is in better shape. This fisherman usually goes about 10 miles out to his fish traps and back every few days.

      Yamada is his engine, there are many brands of 1 and 2 cylinder high and low speed diesels. I plan to use Yamada single cylinder 18 hp high speed diesel with electric start on my boat. The low speed max out at about 2400 rpm and the high speed at about 3600 rpm. I'm having trouble finding a marine transmission with fwd, neutral and reverse, they are made in China mostly.

      Victor LaSenn I only have a balikbayan visa and will apply for a ACR card when the visa expires. if I got Philippines citizenship I could loose my US social security payments/benefits. it takes 5 years to get citizenship in the Philippines.

    • @myparadiseonbantayanisland9030
      @myparadiseonbantayanisland9030  7 років тому +1

      Robert M Wright The US government can if they choose stop your social security benefits if you take citizenship in another country. They may not do it however they can. Dual citizenship would be less likely, renouncing your US citizenship would be more likely. It is their option. I don't like it but it is a reality.
