Mashita is still mad that Yashiki solved the Honey Bee Family case in like a single night so he's speedrunning the Departed.
And he's taken the time to be snarky about it too

At that point it would probably be mecha spirit mashita who got dollified by yashiki once one of his stunts didn’t turn out as well. These guys really risk it all every time.
Ngl, I like the idea of a horror fighting game.
Mashita didn't directly answer the question about the snake rock just so he could watch Yashiki make a fool of himself by meowing at a boulder lololol
To be fair, both cats and snakes hiss, Yashiki should've gotten it.

REMEMBER
When in the first episode Manly went "Oh no they're gonna go after Mashita"???
YEAH GUESS WHAT
He uncover the Departed's ruse in a few hours of following Yashiki around. No wonder the ghost got so pissed at him.
Pitting a couple of high schoolers (and a ghost) against an ex-cop specialized in investigative work is just a bad match lol.
He called it immediately xD We all knew the Spirits biggest rival
Kinda funny how other partners of Yashiki is just make the departed jealous but didn't do anything much but Mashita, they really see him as rival
Truly the real otp
No wonder Mashita's always grumpy and snarky. Yashiki's always surrounded by underage girls trying to steal him away from his boyfriend.
*Yashiki working on the Red Doll*
*Mary in the shadows*
"Yashikiiiiiii... WHO'S THIS?!?! I'm gone for a few months, and you've already moved onto ANOTHER DOLL?!?! I THOUGHT WE HAD SOMETHING SPECIAL!!!"
hey! she saved my life, least I can do is patch her up.
I can see Mary being like "I'm the only one who can be your arch nemesis!"
Pretty sure Mary prefers to call him Yashiki or Lord Yashiki. The last one clearly meant to not be respectful.
Dude probably managed to scrape up Kakuya too somehow after NG.
I wish she wasn't so evil. I really like what they had going on with Mary being his only guide towards spiritual things.
I think we could use someone like Mashita in our lives. He's optimistic in a vicious way, but grounded in reality. A bit of a bastard who made an old man meow only to one up him with a hiss, yell at him for not celebrating a case closed, and the first thing he wants to say when he rings up Yashiki is to tell him "I ran so hard that I wanted to puke."
Bastards with golden hearts are great, and Mashita's one of the best of them.
I know a guy IRL who reminds me of Mashita. He's cold but caring. Has military experience, a psychologist and coaches to support me becoming Esports player. He can call me a retard and I know damn well I deserved it (still makes me mad). Or we genuinely share a good laugh and can enjoy eachothers silent company. He's busy alot of the time but when he makes the time, its always a pleasent surprise. I never really knew why he kept ties with me after a break, when I turned 18, but I'm grateful he did. He and I wear our hearts on our sleeves but I sense an older soul in him. And Its always interesting talking to him and always has a new story to tell.
Only difference is we're both in our 20's but our backgrounds are like night an day.
I'm lucky to have that. One of the reasons I enjoyed Death Mark so much as a series. Makes their dynamic relatable to me. As I am super introverted from another country I feel better knowing someone has my back.

26:05 “I saw Fruits Basket” “that damn mouse” LMAOOO that damn Yuki’s fault indeed
Never watched it, can you explain?
OH I FINALLY FOUND MY KINDRED SPIRIT WHO WAS SO THRILLED HAHAHA
@@changednamelitthe story revolves around the animals of a story relating to how a mouse tricked a cat to not attend a banquet that the god set up for them, it was a really special banquet and the deception caused the cat to fall out of liking with the god - but the fruits basket reference is just an anime that made the whole sappy store sappier 😂👍✨
@@changednamelit It’s as the person above me explained! The Fruits Baskets anime uses the Chinese Zodiac concept, Yuki is the rat and the cat is another character named Kyo. Both of them are “enemies” bc of the legend where the rat tricked the cat. So yes, the reference Manly mentioned is about that 😂 It is that damn mouse (Yuki)’s fault
I'm not sure why, but Manly's slightly panicked "No!" when asked certain questions just cracks me up.
Manly voicing Abe with ultimate snobbyness kills me everytime
Manly’s voice acting in most characters is inmaculate, like when he voices smug hiroo.
I can tell when he's making a woman's voice for some fking reason. His range might not be wide, but he sure sounds convincing
he really took the criticism when he va'd in boogeyman to heart I think as his perfomance has certainly improved wonderfully.
Ngl I felt like this was the weakest out of the spirit hunter games. Because spoilers for NG, Kakuya’s idea of love was more unsettling compared to The Departed using Michiho and Himeko as pawns for a messed up wedding.
But I still got a laugh out of seeing Yashiki and Mashita, grown ass men, making cat noises while dealing with spirits lol
Honestly,I feel the same too. Even the characters feel off in this game compared to the other two
I thought it started really strong, the atmosphere was there, but the cases just didn't seem to develop the overall cast and the dynamic of the story as much as I would've liked to. The new supporting characters were often kind of just "there" (I feel like the game could've used a chapter where the main partner/target is Sakamoto, as her character barely has a reason to exist in the story). Also, conceptual development of the Departed really stalled during the midgame, and accelerated a lot at the end, making it feel less like an overarching story element and more like just the last in a series of somewhat disconnected ghost encounters.
By the time the conclusion began approaching, and the "who's the departed" question became more prominent, everyone and everything felt pretty close to where they were at the start of the journey, despite the many hours of playtime. And speaking of said question, while the twist double answer was cool, imo it was brought down by the plausible options being pretty limited, and by the fact the doll had such little development - we barely manage to exchange a few words with it the few times we see it, then we read about her indirectly through notes and such, and all of a sudden she's dead and the story's over.
Also: Yashiki at some point remarks that school life must've been pretty odd for the possessed girls, since they're spirits from hundreds of years ago. That stuck out to me, cause from a writing standpoint it's so weak to just *tell* us about that, rather than *showing* it somehow through character interactions. I'm not sure how it could've been done in a way that didn't make it obvious that the two were possessed, but giving it all up and having them act fully as the most normal school students right until the reveal is an underwhelming way to go about it. In fact, the characterization of the two girls is kind of weak overall. Personally I would've really liked for Himeko to ever show some kind of affinity to mold, perhaps even in some metaphorical/indirect way, but instead she's painfully normal for the whole game, and only becomes "moldy" for a minute at the end before fusing into the Departed's final form.
Overall I definitely liked the game and I especially enjoyed Manly's playthrough, but theres multiple aspects that couldve been approached better to make the story far more effective.
@@gumba2953 I think its interesting the way they make the departed case develop really late. It shows how hopeless yashiki really is, and just how much he needs more competent help. Konoe being very mad at Yashiki would normally be a cliche trope, but actually completely justified in this case. Mashita basically solved who the departed is after the few hours hes been around for, so he was right scolding Yashiki for not actually investigating anything.
I do think the way they approaches things makes the horror aspect really weak, and much more like a mystery case, except sherlock actually helps solving the case only in the last chapter.
@@shrunker684 I find Yashiki being so dense quite frustrating. I know part of it is to make sure players have decisions and to spell out the plot for anyone who isn't catching on, but he is just such a weak protagonist in this one
Yeah, this game was the weakest when it comes to the characters, story, and scares. I'm glad I'm not the only one being frustrated with Yashiki here, and I'm disappointed with the very tame scary scenes. While NG wasn't perfect either, I think it was the best out of the three games.

I suppose saving Sakamoto would allow Yashiki to more sincerely “forgive” the Departed in addition to returning the girls, since everyone else who got killed were either responsible for or contributed to reigniting the trauma of the spirits except for these three.
Besides that, the Departed only started her haunting after stealing Michiho’s and Douryou’s bodies, so I suppose not killing Sakamoto allowed the spirit to remain relatively “pure” and benevolent enough to remember to return her victims’ bodies. Like the equivalent of spirits murdering your partners because they still hold a grudge in previous games, but this time they’re doing it out of gratitude to your benefit.

@@miajajajajajajajajajo needs this type of fanfic. IMMEDIATELY
I know the monster artist from NG (they also may have worked on the first game) is one of the artists working on Silent Hill f. I assumed this is the reason why there’s such a shift from very grotesque body horror styled monsters to somewhat unnerving but overall goofy styled monsters. I don’t think the monsters were bad, they were still very visually interesting, but they don’t evoke the same type of feelings like the Kannon Soldier or the Screaming Author did in the previous games.
That explains that while The Departed’s second design is just not hitting the way the previous games are! It felt less horrifying and more just fleshy without fear of that makes sense. It felt like it just missed the mark of being terrifying these designs but gives me hope for the new silent hill!
the kannon soldier was cool for the story its desing was kinda meh it was just a statue with a human head but yeah the monster definitivly fell off exept for the departed they were cool
I loved how Kannon soldier had that weird face - I liked the Departeds design especially with the hidden mouth face during the forest bit

Out of the three, NG feels the best because the ghosts feel like they’re taken seriously. DM2 is sadly pretty weak cuz it’s just too campy compared to the other two. Even the silliest NG design really strikes - probably the Momotaru ghost.
Kashima suffered the most from the art style change. Just a direct rip of the base model (tall masked woman with coat but basically human) would have been way better.
Still wish NG and DM2 had a collector’s version like the original with the really good art and bio booklet.
I will say, it makes some sense to me that girls would just... show up at his house. I knew a few that, if they knew, that a famous, occult-specialized, and bored (rarely busy) "older bachelor" lived near by, they'd probably knock at the door at his house if a friend told them they could, without questioning them.
Congrats on the wedding Manly
I just realized that every time Michiho and Himeko as The Departed were put in erotic positions and situations, they had to have done it on purpose. Talk about giving your fiancé some pre-marital fanservice.

THE REAL HUSBAND'S BACK

You are one cultured swine, have a cookie 🍪 UwU
RIP to the poor husbands, who Yashiki and the game treats as if they're non-existent and those heads in the CG are just mannequins w/ how all they ever mention is "those poor brides".
Well, at least their deaths were quicker, the brides had to go through days, probably weeks of torture before dying. Maybe the grooms were murdered before they knew what was happening and so they didn't have the time to develop a grudge
@@miajajajajajajajajajo Oh, no doubt the brides got it worse. But the way the events are talked about, it's like they were the only \/ic+ims, it's ridiculous.
@@streamofthesky yeah, and there were probably way more brides in the past before the departed's curse, but their souls didn't linger and became spirits, so we can assume that they passed on or didn't stick around nearly as long. If the vision that appeared breefly the cemetery is not from the soul of a groom or their lingering grudge, then it's safe to assume it's from the departed themselves.
The point is that the departed has been marinating in hatred and pain for waaaaayyy too long, and at this point there's nothing to do about the grooms if their souls are not here
I’m kinda surprised that they didn’t mention Tsukasa. Even though Christie and Banshee didn’t actually show up in this game, at least they were mentioned. Also, I’m guessing they gave Suzu a small cameo because she was a popular character
My headcanon is Yashiki just forgets about lil brats in his old age 😂
Suzu has a bigger role in the Kickstarter exclusive extra chapter, it also deals with Mary so It's really disappointing we'll never get to play it. There is a really good video translation of it at least.
Apparently, there's a post game extra chapter that wasn't included in the English release. However, someone did manage to translate the whole chapter. (Post game spoilers) YT link: ua-cam.com/video/10DdeIoI4QI/v-deo.htmlsi=pwXf_nrqWXeHw_NJ
Thank you, this brought me extra joy
I was really excited to see someone not only translated it but did so in a way it's like a let's play if it had come out for us. It's such a disappointment we didn't get this.
Yashiki's still the guy who can show compassion for spirits and recognizes that they're only corrupted by their grudges, but man did they write him to be so incompetent. When Izumi said that the Departed was pretending to be someone, everyone in the school should instantly become a suspect, yet he didn't really do much with this information (Mashita calls him out on it later on lol). Having the previous Mark Bearers come by because you can't trust anyone there would've been better justification for their appearance imo, but the story doesn't really acknowledge him basically bringing outsiders to school. When the girls told him that they were cursed for months and all they got was a different hair color and a face mark... no way he didn't think of them more suspiciously. It's even worse when you consider that in the first game, which only happened months before this one, he was basically played by Mary the whole time, so you'd think the dude would learn to be skeptical of his new allies.
Otherwise, it's still great to see Yashiki's story continue and seeing the Mark Bearers come together just to help him is endearing, although their presence is a detriment of the new characters in the game. Hopefully in the sequels, he's learned from his mistakes here and eventually become that man we see in that one bad end of NG.
I agree though I get why some of the more frustrating choices are made. STILL he's written like a legit NPC with no agency no NOTHING. If I could rewrite the entire plot I would
I do agree with wishing that they explored some of the new characters in Death Mark 2 a bit more - I really wish that Sakamoto ended up like Hiroo, not believing in any of it but being dragged headfirst into the entire thing. Her as a partner instead of Hiroo would have been really nice, and would have set up for there being a further reason to need to convince her that Yashiki isn't doing anything with Michiho and Douryou. Because sure, he's here for a legitimate purpose now, but that wouldn't make her any less suspicious of him bringing students into the equation, especially knowing how dangerous The Departed was.
Yeah.. I was really hoping that she could be Yashiki's partner and explore the school with him the moment she's introduced.. it's such a waste of opportunity
It says a lot about this plot when Mashita can solve the case within two days lol. If Yashiki didn't have a bleeding heart and had Mashita with him from the get-go, the entire case would be done within a week.
The plot was stretched out way too much, but I'm glad that this case gave Yashiki a sense of identity now. I didn't like that the plot required Yashiki to be clueless and aimless, but it strengthened the fact that he does NEED someone to ground him (aka Mashita) while investigating. The emphasis on teacher-student relationship thing is still so weird to me, but I'm glad Yashiki doesn't reciprocate any of their feelings. I'd rather he focus on helping people and spirits instead of (forbidden) romance lmao.
The new characters here are a missed potential tbh, especially Sakamoto. Bringing in the previous Mark Bearers slightly overshadowed the new cast (besides Mashita, he HAS to be with Yashiki). Having Mr. Konoe as a partner in the first chapter was nice. Imagine if we could investigate with Sakamoto or Abe? That'd be fun.
If they're going to make Death Mark 3, I really hope they just keep Mashita in as Yashiki's permanent partner (ofc there's still an option to swap in and partner with the new characters) cuz without someone like Mashita, Yashiki's gonna be wandering around lmao (I bet this was the case with Saya when they were investigating cases together). All in all DM2 is a decently good game, but between DM1 and DM2, DM1 is more memorable to me.
Yeah I agree.
Sadly after DM and NG this one feels weaker in writing, characters, gameplay, art and atmosphere… in many ways it was too predictable.
I wished to see Abe, Maruhashi, Sakamoto and Konoe in more important roles, but unfortunately; they made the main plot about the two worst characters.
Boring and annoying, Michiho and Douryou should’ve been written a lot better or scrapped entirely.
@@muuuumipappa If they wrote Michiho and Doryou better and less predictable, I would've sympathized with them more, but with how obvious Michiho was (she wasn't barely subtle about The Departed's feelings towards Yashiki), I couldn't even like her at all lmao. If only they kept her initial attitude of 'you're my rival in this case so no way am I gonna help you!' (like Abe did) or smth else... Doryou was so-so for me until Chapter 6-7 where she started being as obvious as Michiho.
It made me feel sad seeing Yashiki depend on two teenage girls that he barely knew and didn't even suspect a single thing (boy wtf?) when he had some of the adult Mark Bearers there for him. I know he didn't want to rope them into the case, but I wouldn't still emotionally rely on two kids who are suspicious af.
Anyway the writing here, plot wise and character wise was just meh and I could care less about the two main girls here. I hope I don't see them in the future (the others are fine) because what are they gonna offer? Just their weird comedic relief of liking Yashiki (despite those feelings not even theirs to begin with)?
@@airalin3012
Yeah the girls could’ve definitely been written better in so many different ways. The flirty ”qUiRkY” Michiho they went with was just insufferable.
The girls were a big part of the game, but the time with them felt forced and wasted, it just didn’t feel meaningful or emotional at all. All the suggestive fanservice stuff was cringe-inducing and cheapened them even more.
So the ending(s) too felt unsatisfying.
I almost felt sympathy for them after Michiho ”died” and Douryou was talking about how close friends they were, like sisters. But at that point it was already blatantly obvious who the enemy was.
NG introduced characters so well, I was confused how badly they chose to do it this time.
The old and new characters were so separated from each other, with Yashiki being the only proper link between them. New characters lacked interesting relationships/interactions with one another or with characters we already know and care about.
And what was the point in introducing a new character (like Izumi, Horikoshi, Kakuta…) every chapter, and learning their backstories, and then have them predictably die right away, regardless of player actions…?
@@airalin3012
Lol exactly, wtf Yashiki?!
He’s depending on two high school girls even though he had Mark Bearers and adults he could trust!
So stupid:
-he knew the whole time that the girls could be the Departed.
-and even if the girls turned out to be innocent, he put them in more danger unnecessarily by involving them more and going out investigating at night with them, when he could’ve just talked to them at the school (with the other adults) when they wanted to share info.
It just comes across infuriating and pathetic when a grown man can’t say NO to some random girls. Lmao Yashiki just went ”oh okay” at everything:
”Okay fine, join my dangerous investigation at night”
”Oh you knocked? Sure come on in my mansion” (even though Yasuoka said how bad it would be to talk to the girls). Like come on….
This game almost ruined Yashiki’s character for me.
@@muuuumipappai think what gets me even more is how yashiki would keep insisting "NO you guys gotta stay oUT of this investigation, it's TOO DANGEROUS!!" and yeah, that's consistent to his character............ until michiyo and douryou would keep self inserting themselves with him on investigations and he barely puts up a fight at all in comparison!! like what the hell, man. i know they're usually valuable intel for him and he's generally a passive person, but the double standard is so weird to me😭
Death Mark and Spirit Hunter NG has always been my favorite to binge watch from you, it's a shame they didn't have as much of a scary factor for this game.. like the past games most of them were genuinely scary. At least the next transformation of The Departed makes up for it, it feels like they put all the effort into the last ghost compared to the others sadly. I really hope for the next sequel it has the same charm of the previous games. Regardless keep up the great work and thank you for posting these at god speed :)
oh, there's another sequel for the death mark and the ng? i thought this was the last one
Theres another sequel??? Im excited!
I thought they mention spirit carnival at the end of NG.
@@Gancoek Omg i forgot about that
I think the artist called Kera was not involved this time?
I believe her unique style was behind the awesomely creepy spirit designs in Spirit Hunter NG.
I love Death Mark 2, but it feels like it lacks direction on how they wanted it to end, in the first Death Mark and NG, it feels like we always running out of time, we look for how to counter/fight and or save the spirits while getting rid of the roots, in the first game, it was the Death Mark, second, it was Kakuya origin, but in Death Mark 2, there's a lot of stuff about M city, the ritual, curse, clock tower mysteries that hasn't solved yet, it's like we barely making out alive with pure luck, or dare I say "with how chad we are".
The buildup in the first 2 games is great, with each twist opening up a path to our answer, in this one, the question piled up without getting the full answer, which is fine in some cases.
All in all, the game is great, I love the first game the most, and I hope they make another Spirit Hunter game in the near future.
Man, I recall in the first episode Mr. Konoe lets it slip a hint that something might have happened in Konoehara's old building that made them abandon it for the new building; he said it brought back bad memories but there was nothing that linked it to the current case. I thought it was going to be important for something eventually, but I guess not, it really is just a passing comment... (unless the incident actually refers to the death of Mr. Konoe's grandfather, the first Headmaster). I also am a bit disappointed that they just dropped Sakamoto out of the story in the True End, I kinda wanted her to formally apologize to Yashiki for being so hostile and condescending towards him.
Really wanted her to work alongside Yakishi during the last part of the game. She felt like someone who would fit in with the rest of the cast. Maybe she'll make a return in a future installment.

It’s hard not to like Mashita, he said “who’s this bastard trying to look sexy for?” Like damn Yashiki is right there 😭😭😭

He’s blessed us 🙌🏻
ik right
Thought the exact same thing
Us deciding to watch the video very late: "mAy i bItE yOu..?"
I'm hoping he's powering through this game to make way for an Alone in the Dark playthrough.
The next death mark should gave us an answer to
1. Why these ghosts want to eat Yashiki
2. Why Mashita doesn't.
Mashita totally does man, it just happens off screen
@@branastasia8013 I still always picture eating others as like... cannibalism lol Can't correct my brain to think "oh like oral sex" for some reason
Just a speculation but for the first question
Yashiki is sympathetic and emphatic as heck towards spirits, his soul must be delicious to them, you know like corrupting the pure thing
As for the second one, Mashita kinda does, he is the obstacle the spirit have to go through to get to Yashiki (see how The Departed was so jealous that they attack Mashita and was chased after)
I think DM1 did a much better job creating a scary vibe than this one. I really liked how they made the user reveal ghosts with the flashlight. It made the user to be always on the edge since something could always creep out of the environment. The side scrolling element of DM2 kind of nullified that I think since revealing ghosts required some sort of transition; I think it's why the devs felt it was necessary to include random jump scares.
1:36:29 you can see that their teeth on the sprite became red after he performed the ceremony
I love that kind of small details in a game
Death Mark, Spirit Hunter NG, Death Mark II, they taught me the root of all problems are dolls, every single damn time.
Interestingly enough, the characters from Spirit Hunter NG appear in another horror/dungeon crawler "Undernauts Labyrinth of Yomi." But I'm ready for the Spirit Hunter NG and Death Mark mash up where you get all the partners and basically become the ghostbusters.
Because Experience made both.
I recently noticed some of the spirits mentioned in an anime Dark Gathering
@@Kat.GrininSome spirits mentioned in the games (i.e. Hanako of the Toilet) are common ghost stories/entities in the Japanese occult. So you'll often hear them in mediums that cover the same genre.
And so ends Death Mark 2, and supposedly this series as a whole. I agree with Manly that all three games do kind of end up being about even because they are shine and falter here and there with different elements, but at the end of the day I love this trilogy. It's such good horror, so many wonderfully creepy ghosts and a strong cast of people trying to stay alive. Phenomenal.
The whole "horrifying ritual done to innocent girls in the past as a weirdly twisted tradition of an isolated Japanese town" thing actually struck me as very similar to some of the plot lines in the Fatal Frame series. Kind of an interesting parallel. When that part was revealed I started thinking "okay, Yashiki needs an occult camera now" lol
Yo I'm glad I'm not the only one who picked up on the Fatal Frame parallels lol
I was thinking the same thing when I felt this game was similar to fatal frame.
too bad they didn't give us cg of yashiki and mashita oiled up with their clothes torn in compromising positions to finish the fan service 😔
LMFAO YEAHH
Mashita always shows up when the flirtier spirit ladies are about to try an' claim his man. He was sus of the girls surrounding the clueless Yashiki and figured out the Departed's ruse immediately.
And, according to the death mark wiki, they did a voiceover of the NG bad ending where Mashita saved Yashiki from a cursed Akira, meaning they likely continue to be partners after death mark 2. Also, in the Mary's new color DLC, Mashita leaves his coat at the mansion, which some speculate may belong to his sensei. Just a sus detail that's never explained.
All these ghost ladies chasing Yashiki, but we all know Mashita's the power bottom and Yashiki's the soft dom in this relationship. Lol kidding... (or am I?)
Soft dom Yashiki? Ehh, in all my knowledge of BDSM I wouldn't call it that since we clearly see Mashita telling Yashiki what to do and though you might interpret the players input as "commanding" Mashita what go do, he does it only with spirits and with all his friends so just a no from me.
I would either interpret Yashiki as Top Servant or as Servant sub. He likes doing things for others (serving his perfect coffee lol) and is otherwise rather subdued while Mashita gets him out of visions and helps him focus on important things by giving commands.
But as in all folks: To each their own with consent, safety and sanely in mind!
C'mon, its obvious they switch. But yes, Mashita is a power bottom while Yashiki is the gentle top, and on reverse Yashiki is the shy bottom for Mashita teasing top. :v
@@pipigoossensi agree with you😂❤
fujos are scarier than any spirit yashiki will ever face damn...
Think about how traumatized Yashiki is after all of this. Copious amounts of therapy is needed (that's if he even goes or talks about it)and he most likely still won't be some semblance of okay. Why can I just imaging him laying or going unresponsive for hours, as his minded unfortunately has the time to process every he did, saw and felt.
Self projecting probably
Honestly, what Mary did to him was much worse.

A weighted blanket would fix him
26:40 Yashita, a grown man, just meowed at a big rock. I wonder how The Departed would react
Mashita when the one skill of being able to hiss like a cat trying to imitate a snake finally comes into play:
46:38 So as long as ANYONE else is standing besides him The Departed gets jealous and tries to hurt them… somehow I think that’s a red flag (just ignore all the murder and violence and trauma they’ve inflicted)
Yashiki wants to help those trapped in the darkness. Makes me wonder how would he deal with those who would willingly become spirits just to get some revenge.
Hey, if they decide to continue the series after this that would definitely be an excellent hook for a new mystery and play off his character development in this game really well - the guy who wants to save everyone he can no matter the cost, against someone who wants to become the worst curse imaginable no matter the cost.
totally agree how the spirit monster designs got too 'anime' looking compared to the other games that gave a really unsettling creepy vibe to it , it was still a fun playthrough! i missed long series types ty manly :DD
Not done with full video but finished main game I’m kinda sad about the missed potential of the characters in this game by that being Sakamoto and the Headmaster as companions. I’m full on conspiracy theorist that Sakamoto’s design is similar to Yashiki’s sister - the black rabbit motif in particular. I wonder if she would have reminded Yashiki of her if they spent more time on her character. Also the Headmaster could have been the one to help Yashiki discover The Departed’s past using the previous headmaster’s journal beforehand
I kinda wish that there was a bad ending where all of your companions died, like in the original and NG. Like, not gonna lie, I kinda expected that if the bad ending happened that way, then Douryou and Michiho would become the departed in Yashiki's mansion if you didn't save everyone you could. A bit of a disappointment that the only bad ending is if you mess up who the departed is, though I kinda get it.
Also you literally can't get the real ending no matter what you do in the first playthough is kind of dissappointing. I'm not sure you'd really know you needed to replay from a save game load to get a different ending.
ah yes, death mark 2, the game where u shoot ghosts to death (or undeath), u open paths by making cat noises and u face the biggest horror known to mankind: social interaction
10/10 game, would shoot ghosts again
Limiting a character's appearance coz he's way too op for the story is crazy.
Also yashiki's meow is the crunchiest, most pathetic meow ive ever heard in my life. God bless.
Tysm for the letsplay manly!!🫶
I love how triumphant the music is when you're saying "I just want to try to save everyone ... Because I'm the Spirit Doctor" while every person you have tried to save is dead (as well as some bystanders) and every spirit you have tried to save has been devoured, except like the pool one. It's such a funny "fuck yeah!" moment in that context.
1:04:43 Man, I love Yashiki's "Maybe because I'm the Spirit Doctor" speech so much. After being beaten down so much by so many things, seeing him still holding on to that altruism is great.
Mahita would be going insane about Yashiki fixing the doll, it was bad enough when he picked up the spider
Alternate Ending:
Machita and Yasuoka are arguing about something when Machita gets a call...
Yashiki-"Machita... How fast can you get to kujo mansion...?"
Yasuoka hearing Yashikis voice steps closer
Machita-"Its gonna take at least a few minutes, why something happened?!"
Yashiki-"uhhhh..."
At that moment three diferent voices were heard from the phone:
Mary-"Lord.Yashiki~"
Female doll-"Dear Husband..."
Red chlothed spider ghost(I forgot theyr name)-" Sensei !?"
Yashiki-"yeah I migth have made some sligth mistakes...please hurry Mashita-"
Alternative ending, also known as the harem ending
9 hours of Death Mark in 48 hours? Sleep be damned!
the NG soundtrack at the end was very nostalgic, I used to listen to it everyday I loved it so much. Thank you Manly for the Death Mark II contents back to back, I got to finish it before my curiosity’s eating me alive 😂
Slightly disappointed at how predictable the ending was ngl, though I didn’t know what’s the story behind the departed but I think all of us guessed the ending already early on. The oversexualization of women and girls here is worse than ever, I had so many icks here and there (sadly expected it considering the previous games). But besides that it was an enjoyable series and it was nice seeing all of the Mark Bearers show up here again especially Mashita lol. Thanks Manly!
*Mashita:* I'm only helping you for the money. I-it's not like I _like_ you or something, Yashiki-baka.
---
God, both the Departed's transformations were so uncomfortable to look at, seeing as it's pretty obvious what they were _supposed_ to look like.
---
It's probably for the best the two girl lost their memories. Then they won't have to remember all those fan-servicey moments while the Departed was pretending to be them.
...
OH NO! They're gonna remember the fan-servicey moments now!!!
---
After watching this series, I'd say Death Mark 2 has been my least favourite. It's not as scary as the previous two and, as Manly talked about, the ghosts are not as creative and surreal in their designs; they frankly look rather plain or goofy most of the time. I also don't find their stories or sections to be all that memorable. NG is my favourite out of all them, because I find the spirits were very memorable, both in their design and their stories. The Screaming Author chapter is definitely the one that stands out for me, and remains my favourite case in the entire series.
And as I've mentioned in earlier comments, the fan-servicey elements are also really bad here, even worse than the first Death Mark. You could argue that it's meant to be part of the theme about the Departed's love for Yashiki, but those moments still really ruined the story for me.
But I don't dislike Death Mark 2. The whole mystery about who the Departed was was pretty interesting to follow, even if it was pretty obvious from the beginning. I just don't think it's quite as strong as the previous two games.
Also totally agree on Spirit Hunter NG! ❤
NG remains my favourite too: strong plot and pacing, great characters and interesting spirits.
Also it feels like there’s more (meaningful) choices for the player. Satisfying endings.
Also gorgeous art and atmosphere, and good soundtrack.
I also really loved the Screaming Author, definitely one of the best parts of the series. The atmosphere, the art, the story… just 10/10.
same NG is literally one of my favorite games of all times 😭😭😭 I loved everything about it and I still do to this day lol. The spirit designs in NG were the perfect mix of beatiful and grotesque, even the blob monster one. Like considering the backstory, the designs make perfect sense. And I got attached to almost all of the characters, especially the main trio. Watching their death CGs actually hurts my soul lol. Whereas with Death Mark, I think we all just kinda collectively did not get too attached to anyone other than Mashita lol. I like the characters, but they don’t feel like they matter to Yashiki that much. And with Death Mark 2, it’s also kinda hard to get attached to the new characters, because we’re more or less forced to suspect every single one of them of being the big bad.
Coincidentally, I don’t remember many fan service CGs in NG - if you count that one Rosé’s death scene as one. The angle is definitely not a typical fan service CG lol
Sorry for the rant, I just really really love this series (especially NG that game is my spiritual child (?)) XD
@@hajimesbiggestsimp Yeah, NG I think did a better job in having you develop an emotional connection with all the characters, both the companions and even the spirits. Death Mark 2 I can see tried to do that with Douryou & Michiho, but it kind of felt a bit forced (which actually makes sense given the big reveal). Plus, their relationship with Yashiki, even after they're brought back in the True End route, had always kind of bordered on being a bit inappropriate. 😅
There were at least two really fan-servicey CGs in NG - one was Rose's second death CG in the elevator, as you mentioned. But before that one, there was one with Aunt Natsumi after she gets attacked by Kakuya, and Akira had to take off her top to see if she had been affected with the same "mouths-appearing-on-body" curse thing.
There was also the one you see of Hazuki in a magazine at the beginning where she's posing in sexy lingerie as her idol persona. But I'm not sure if I should really count that one, because it at least made more sense to have in context.
But yeah, NG actually held back on the fan-service CGs; another reason why I enjoyed NG more than the other two games in teh series.
There's something about SH 1s spirits that I always enjoyed (I think its because the smearing and exaggerations remind me of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark), but that bad ending with Rose for the Screaming Author always stuck with me. As for characters, I agree that the cast in NG was great just because it was smaller and the personal connection some of them had with certain cases. Allowed them to be fleshed out way more.
I agree on everything except the fan service. There's nothing wrong with fan service.
Priests in Spirit Hunter Games: Here I go, doing horrible crimes again!
Next time on Death Mark III priests commit crimes against humanity
I'm so sad that Manly won't be able to play the extra chapter that involves Mary since it was available only to backers 😭
l hope that what is suposed to be NG's "true ending" is really true, cuz l'd like to see everyone mix in the 4th game + new characters, the series has a lot of potential + the visuals slap
I feel like at the end of the death mark series, Yashiki going to collect more cursed doll and be known in the neighborhood as the old man doll enthusiast.
Now we wait for another game from the series
And for Manly's gameplay and commentary
So... Yeah... We waiting bois
I think in this series, this game is the least scary, only on a few occasions did it feel scary, none of the spirits in my opinion were quite as scary as the first two games, and none of the ghosts stories made my skin crawl compared to say the Screaming Author from Spirit Hunter. This game felt more like a thriller than horror.
"I'm not a priest, so I'm not here to listen to your pitiful wailing and offer you repentance" good lord! This guy is Ice cold!
I'm glad that you still do these series on long niche Japanese games despite them not getting as much traction.. respect
2:07:42 - This is really incidentally funny. Yashiki said that with such confidence, and then silence, and then a frustrated scream, and then a sentence that literally starts with "good lord".
So Yashiki is just collecting brides.. and young girls who have a crush on him. Yashiki can’t solve cases rationally and quickly without Mashita.
He’s drowning in too many women to think straight

You definitely made up for the lack of Death Mark 2 videos with this 3-video bundle, Manly. God bless.
I was lamenting that I may have to wait another week for the next Death Mark upload (since it was 2 upload per week for the past few weeks). And then Manly did the unthinkinable! Thank you kindly!
I imagine Mashita coming over to the Kujo mansion and finding the Departed Doll that Yashiki is trying to restore and throwing a bitch fit and yeeting out the window lol
Would love to see more from the Spirit Hunter series, and maybe even see Yashiki come back as a support character rather than a main character, as I feel his story/character arc has come to a satisfying conclusion. Also, there's an extra scene if you choose not to go back to the clock tower after you hear the bell ring on 2nd run; it's still the normal end but you get a scene with Sakamoto, Maruhashi and Abe that I really liked.
It's fun that, around the 1hr mark, Yasuoka is giving the MC the 'friendship is magic' pep talk, hahaha!
Now I‘m imagining Yashik coming home one day and finding „The crimson doll“ and Mary sitting on the couch in the hall, having a tea togrther😂
Was a fun right from the start to end. I do agree some things did feel a lil lackluster compared to its previous games. I enjoyed DM and NG especially for their bone chilling ghost designs and backstories, coming across DM's fascinatingly creepy concept art is how I found out the series. I do like them bringing back the mark bearers (especially everyone's favourite pahanomal cop), but I wish they utilized and fleshed out the new charas more (c'mon chuuni kid use your 'cursed' eyes more)
Fun fact, idk if the steam page has mentioned this but the JP title for Death Mark II is "Shibito Magire" or roughly TL'd to "Bite of the Departed", hence why the brides kept going on about wanting to eat or "bite" Yashiki.
I binge-watched Death Mark and then NG before watching this series. I enjoyed Death Mark 2, but not as much as the previous two. Spoilers below.
As Manly touched on, I think the biggest difference is the hook. The personal involvement that the main character had.
Death Mark 1: You have the death mark, so it's personal from start to finish. The tension builds with each case you solve that doesn't dispel the mark.
NG: The game has an arguably overly-long intro where you bond with Ami, only for her to get whisked away. "Where is Ami?" is in your head the whole time, and you gradually bond with Akira's friends as well. When the friends are threatened later in the game, you really feel it.
Death Mark 2: I guess the hook is "who is the departed?" which is pretty weak in comparison. I didn't care that much about any of the characters, and not being able to save most of the victims really hurt the story. If there's no choice, there aren't any stakes so the tension felt much lower than the previous two games.
There also was seemingly more repetition without meaning, like with the lost teeth. Even things like the D-man postcards in the previous game were repetitive, but there was a little riddle attached to them and it tied into the first game's cast, which kept it fun. Also, was this game much shorter than NG? Even if it wasn't, it felt much shorter.
I'm really looking forward to the next game. I hope they bring back the primarily 1st person style, but I didn't mind the side-scrolling too much. I mostly hope the next hook is better and we have more time to get personally invested in the characters, with tension around the fact that we can save/lose them. NG is my favorite character-wise, but I agree that the execution with Mary and the tightness of the narrative really makes Death Mark 1 special.
Thanks for this play-through! It was a blast.
3:16:03 if I recall well.. its the audio drama with the blue mark! an alternate reality where Mashita and Rose Mulan teamed up to stop the corrupted (due to his failure to save the bearers of the mark) Yashiki.
Mary has her white gothic lolita alternate design concept art used in this alternative story.. spoilers... if I recall well, it ended with white Mary and Rose defeating Yashiki, Rose and white Mary had a talk before Mary completely exhausts her life after the eventful night. Also yeah, we could hear the late sibling of Yashiki in this audio drama! We got to see her perspective at the time when Yashiki first arrived at the mansion with no memories.
...
I say, I suggest supporting the team behind the series, but yeah, you can also check out a youtuber's upload of the bonus content, it even has some kind of Q&A, and a song that may have white Mary's thoughts/feelings for Yashiki in that alternative world.
Yashiki meowing and Mashita hissing was hilarious (and adorable).
I agree with Manly's consensus on the games, the first is my favorite and has the best overall horror vibe while this one is the weakest. The 2D side-scrolling isn't immersive, the new characters aren't fleshed out very well and the spirit designs are disappointing, not helped by the googly eyes; though, like Manly said, this actually worked with Shimi-O in the first game. I'm also surprised we didn't see Tsukasa at least get mentioned the way Christie did. Glad they squeezed in Banshee at least, his distant "EXCELLENT" got a laugh out of me.
Time to continue to be amused by all the synchronized YOSH!
So many uploads so quickly, we're eating good, especially since the curiousity was killing me 😂 thank you Manly
The Departed's true form looks a spirit giving birth to another spirit; while her second form seems to be inspired by a women with her legs spread? Very creepy to look at but not really scary. The spirits in this game look more funny than terrifying. The mystery was fun but the spirits from the first two games were the best. Although, it must be difficult to come up with new ideas when someone else has probably done said idea at least once. For example; every vampire, werewolf, zombie, evil doll, and spiritual haunting movie, anime, game, etc. If the idea's been done to death, you have to think of a different way to make it interesting.
Thank you for the double upload, and for playing this game. I can watch people play horror games but I can't play them myself since feels like I'll have an anxiety attack. Unlike Spirit Hunter and NG, (when I first watch them), I was able to watch this play through full screen so it's definitely not as scary as the other two.
Hope you have a great night/ day. 🥰
It's O.O.P. Arts - "Obscure, Occult and Paranormal Articles". It was mentioned in first game
Gosh, I was expecting the last episode of the series to come out later this week!
Thank you, thank you, Manly, for this triple whammy! I just finished episode 6 and im eager for whats to come in this one!
So happy you're covering this series! I kind of think they could stand to drop some of the characters to build on the favourites. They have so many characters now that we don't get too much interaction with each one. Hiroo and Eita are definitely the ones that stand out the most to me - they're such interesting characters that could provide some really good interactions, and I can easily see how they would drive the story forward. On the other hand, I agree that Yakishi, Mashita and Mary definitely stand out more. It's sad to lose characters, but it's preferable to letting all of them become bland or underutilized.
