  • In 1989, the San Francisco R&B group Maze featuring Frankie Beverly released their greatest hits album, "The Greatest Hits of Maze ... Lifelines, Volume 1." Included in the compilation were two versions of their hit, "Joy and Pain," the original album cut and a remixed version which included a rap by Kurtis Blow.
In my humble opinion, the rap completely detracted from the greatness of the song and was totally unnecessary. With all due respect to Mr. Blow and his achievements, when you have the powerhouse music of Maze backing the beautiful lilting vocals of Mr. Frankie Beverly, you don't need a rap. I call this upload the "deeteedub re-edit" because I have removed Mr. Blow's rap entirely and it is now 100% Maze and Frankie Beverly.
It should be noted that the original remix was by Hank Shocklee, Eric Sadler and Paul Shabazz.
