≈ हाम्रो जैविक विविधता ≈
डा. नारायण कोजु जैविक विविधताका अनुसन्धानकर्मी हुन् । अहिले उनी दोलखाको तिब्बती सीमावर्ती हिमाली क्षेत्र लप्चीमा फिल्ड रिसर्च गरिरहेका छन् । त्यही ठाउँमा बुद्ध धर्मका विख्यात योगी मिलारेपाले हजार बर्षअघि साधना गरेको गुफा पनि छ । तिब्बतीहरू मिलारेपालाई हिउँचितुवाको कथासँग पनि जोडेर हेर्छन् ।
डा. कोजुको अनुसन्धान लप्चीका हिउँचितुवा र जलवायु परिवर्तनलगायतका कारणले गर्दा तलका पहाडबाट उक्लेर त्यो हिमाली क्षेत्रमा पुगेका चितुवाहरूमा केन्द्रित छ । त्यहाँ चितुवाका ती दुई प्रजातिबीच के-कस्तो अन्तरक्रिया भइरहेको छ, त्यसलाई उनले ‘क्यामेरा ट्रयाप’ राखेर अध्ययन गर्दैछन् ।
साथै, हाम्रो हिमाली क्षेत्र र तिब्बतबीचको स्थानीय आवागमन अवरूद्ध हुन थालेपछि चौरीगाई पाल्ने चलन के-कसरी निरूत्साहित हुँदैछ, यो कुराकानीमा उनले त्यसबारे पनि बताएका छन् । अनि भारतको आसामबाट कसरी हात्तीका बथान आफ्ना मामाघर खोज्दै बर्षेनी नेपालतर्फ आउँछन्, त्यसबारे झापाको बाहुनडाँगीदेखि उदयपुरसम्म गरेको उनको स्थलगत शोधले धेरै कुरा बताउँछ ।
डा. कोजुको पिएचडीचाहिं हिमाली भेगमा पाइने पाइका भनिने खरायो वर्गमा पर्ने सानो वन्यजन्तुमाथि केन्द्रित छ । त्यसलाई लाङटाङ क्षेत्रमा बुद्धको अवतार जस्तो मानेर श्रद्धा गरिन्छ, दार्चुलाको अपि हिमाल क्षेत्रमा चाहिं औषधीका रूपमा त्यसको मासु खाने चलन छ ।
यी सबै बिषयमाथि एक रोचक र ज्ञानवर्द्धक वार्ताका लागि भिडियो हेर्नुहोला ।
Dr. Narayan Koju is a conservation biologist with over 15 years of expertise in research and teaching across conservation biology, evolutionary biology, wildlife management, and climate change.
Dr. Koju has collaborated globally as a visiting scientist in leading institutions across the USA and China. Currently, he serves as the Program Coordinator for the MSc Natural Resources Management program at Nepal Engineering College, affiliated with Pokhara University, while holding positions as an Affiliated Assistant Professor at the University of Washington and a Visiting Professor at the Kunming Institute of Zoology.
He is currently conducting fieldwork in the mountainous region of Lapchi, near the Tibetan border in Dolakha. This area is also home to a historic cave where the renowned Buddhist yogi Milarepa is believed to have meditated over a thousand years ago. Tibetan folklore even connects Milarepa to the snow leopard, enriching the region’s cultural and ecological narrative.
Dr. Koju's research primarily focuses on the snow leopards of Lapchi and the common leopards that have migrated to higher altitudes due to climate change. Using camera traps, he studies the interactions between these two leopard species in the region.
Additionally, he investigates the decline of traditional yak-raising practices, which have been affected by disrupted local movements between Nepal’s Himalayan regions and the Tibetan Autonomous Region of China. His research also spans Bahundangi in Jhapa to Udayapur, uncovering intriguing insights into the annual migration of elephant herds from Assam, India, to Nepal, driven by connections to their maternal homelands.
Dr. Koju's PhD research centers on the pika, a small mammal in the rabbit family native to the Himalayas. In the Langtang region, the pika is revered as an incarnation of Buddha, while in the Api Himal region of Darchula, it is consumed for its perceived medicinal properties.
