Highly recommend checking out nearby farmers markets to drive your truck to. I used to have a small stationery shop and would do all kind of markets and craft fairs and events. Farmers markets were always my favorite because they tend to have a real sense of community between vendors and they tend to have regular customers who return weekly. They also are usually co-op run and have lower vendor fees.
Bookseller here! If any of the books that you ordered come damaged, you should be able to get a replacement from the publisher. More often than not, they don't even need you to return the damaged copy (and then you can discount the damaged copy). But if you need to make returns, it should be relatively easy to do so. You can even return books that don't sell!
I work on the distribution side of books and just want to add you should be able to request more packaging for the replacement of the fancy copy of LOTR or books like that that came damaged! I work for an indie distributor & we would def do that but I can’t be sure about the bigger ones 🤞🏻
@@EmzieEvs yeahhh, more often than not, it just seems like bigger distributor workers are trying to meet a daily quota and move too fast. I totally understand it, but bigger distributors just tend to have less quality control over their packaging.
Quick note about accessibility: blind people cannot input pins into card readers without buttons - the machine should come with a plastic overlay which will allow a blind person to use it as if it has button so please don’t throw it away! My mum is blind and no longer goes to some of her favourite shops because she cannot use the card readers when it asks for a pin and they did not keep the overlay. I know you will want to make you ✨glorious✨ book truck as accessible as possible 💚 your progress is so exciting!!
I hope this isn't a rude question, but are blind people going to be buying books? (I mean I love reading to other people, so I can see how there are ways to enjoy books without physically reading them) Edit: oh I suppose buying books for other people is a thing too! I'm going to leave my original question there though cause I feel like it's one that other people might have too.
@@helenm1085 Also gonna add that bookshops offer other items as well, such as audiobooks on CDs, some decor, bookmarks, DVDs, some have music CDs... so there's a lot blind people can buy in bookshops besides physical books!
@@lyraserpentine894 I guess I was assuming that in a tiny portable bookshop you might not stock books in braille... But perhaps she should? It's hard as a small business to think of and implement all of the accessibility tools out there, but keeping the overlay for your card reader is an easy one! (Another cool accessibility things I just thought of is that a portable bookshop could offer home visits??)
Ariel at some point you HAVE to take the bookmobile on a great Newfoundland adventure! Hop on the ferry North Sydney to Argentia and drive to St. John's (and the tiny outports along the way!). It totally fits the vibe of NL, and we're bustling with tourists in the summer who definitely would be so excited to buy a book for their holiday. We actually have no independent bookshop here selling new books, just chapters, so we need you to visit!!
Definitely reach out to companies about damages! I worked for a small greeting card biz and most places will credit you back and send a return label for any damaged goods if they want them back. If external cartons are damaged, it's often helpful to provide photos so they can file a claim with the carrier, and most places like to see a photo of any damaged goods anyway. And I'm sure you know this, but be sure to check in anything you receive against packing slips and make sure your orders are complete - no mis-ships, you weren't invoiced for anything you didn't get, etc. It happens so frequently when ordering at scale!
One thing I love about Miss Bissett is that if a dream gets in her head, no matter how big or crazy, she goes and gets it done!! Congratulations, Ariel!!!!!!!!🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Ariel's little "heheheh" when she talks about things she loves is so reminiscent of how I myself express joy towards my interests lmao, I just had an "aha" moment where I wish we were irl friends
The license plate pin is so so cuuute! What a dream to have your own bookshop, and such an interesting idea for it to be a book truck. Also, the categories of the shelves are awesome, not the basic genres, so interesting! I'm looking forward to seeing the truck when it's ready, I'm sure it's going to be so sweet.
I'm so excited for you!!!! My husband and I run a Free Little Library and it is one of the BEST things we have ever done. We especially love the children in our community who come regularly and hopefully we have helped to launch many readers into the world. 🥰🥰🤩🤩
I work in publishing in Europe, my job specifically entails maintaining contact with bookstores and advising them what to stock so seeing this video is so much fun to me. It would be such a dream for me to work with someone who owns a mobile bookstore! Such a different way of approaching a catalogue! Wishing you all the best with this project, I think it’s gonna be a great success!
Just a recommendation, for anyone who might not want the stamp on their books maybe a cardstock with the stamp (like a photocard sized cardstock paper) might be a good alternative to give out!
Wow!!! Would you enjoy occassionally traveling and interviewing local quirky or rare people-types and do Shorts/ or longer interviews with them asking them about books they like?
I bought a LOT of puzzles at the start of the pandemic & I still haven’t put them all together yet, but my favorite brand so far is Ingooood wooden jigsaw puzzles. They are sturdy & they have numbers on the back of each piece so if you get stuck & can’t complete the picture, you can turn them over & get help, lol.
Good luck with this endeavor it sounds so fun. One thing to think about you might want to get a portable gazebo to cover over the top of the truck just in case bad weather or hot weather hits. That way you can stay under it, your precious books will be safe and your customers will be protected and encouraged to spend more time invested in your book shop....
as a bookseller, it’s really fun to watch you discover the art of book selling and alllllll the weird things publishers do (like send a book in a box by itself). i hope to visit the mini truck some day!
I'm not even joking when I say that every time I've opened UA-cam for the past few days I was sad that there was no new Ariel Bissett video. I just love "sitting with you" and watching your lovely cozy videos!
I have the feeling that the mini truck would look amazing if you would paint different parts in different colours and use the colours of your logo (orange, blue and red). Maybe you could paint the roof to look like a giant book was put on top of there. A book roof would be an special feature.
You should sell 2B pencils in the truck! 2B are perfect for underlining books cause they're soft enough that if you want to erase it, it won't leave a mark.
I was watching this video and enjoying it, and then my ears perked up when you said puzzles. If you can get some from Eeboo, I think they would also fit the vibe of your truck!
