Man, this is my final hope. I've been producing vocals for 4 years now and i'm constantly learning. Recently was faced with crazy sharp s's something i've never had a problem with in the past. Hello Joe, just as a side note. I bought a Rode NGT5 which I really like. However, this microphone has a tendency to increase the "Esser" problem. However, since last week, I've been going crazy trying to find the right setting for the DeEsser plug-in that thanks God you found. What I found is that this problem is found on the frequencies between 2kHz to 8kHz. So if you care to try, go to your settings and go to: "TEST FREQUENCIES BETWEEN" and plug 2000 and 8000 in the next line. I also found that it is very effective to change the "NUMBER OF FREQUENCY BANDS to 5. I figured to share this new information as thank's to you and to hopefully pass the help to more people. Best regards.
Congratulations on the new equipment! Always a happy day when new toys show up. Yes, that test is a great tool, and definitely needed practice for both the person and the microphone! Thanks for sharing the settings!
you are such a God send for me! Bless your heart for digging this out and sharing it! it has worked really well so far. Surprisingly it did seem to have some effect on the other parts of the vocal. So i decided to treat each problem part separately and that really worked! Thanks a ton.
Jamuna Priya I’m glad you found it helpful! You’re right, if you have the settings wrong, you can take out too much and cause damage to the other parts of your audio. Try narrowing the frequency to just where your “esses” are by looking at the Analyzer while one of your esses is highlighted.
Thank you, sir! I recently put together an amateur set-up so I can upload commentary videos. I noticed a bad sibilance during playback and done all I could to minimize it through audacity. Fortunately, I came across your video and the DeEsser works like a charm (Windows 10). Again, thank you so much for taking your time finding this solution for us.
Thank you so much. I have a strong Siblance so this was wonderful to learn. Im on windows and it took some exploring to end up where you were in the instructions. But it turned out great!

Hey Joe, thanks so much for demonstrating this with a great video. I have achieved pretty clean and crisp audio overall, but have had trouble with sibilance in my recordings for voice over at times. I was able to apply this plug-in with your directions and I found you were spot on. This helps even the playing field, and just adding a touch seems to do the trick. You are the best! This is exactly what the Doctor ordered, but I can't make it work. I found de-esser, I placed it in Audacity's plug in folder, I open Audacity and go to the effects menu. I click on add/remove program and the de-esser plug in is not there. I go back to the program files and it's there. Any idea what I may be doing wrong? @@joeessayvoice Found it Joe, I'm using Windows and I have Program Files and Program Files X86. The 86 is the newest version. The X86 Program files, Audacity will not accept any plug-ins. It's still in there Lance. They change the position every now and then, but here's the forum link anyway: forum.audacityteam.org/viewtopic.php?p=245549#p245549

@@joeessayvoice thanks, man! I really appreciate it. I've been manually editing out harsh sibilance from hours and hours of audio and if I can get this to work for me I can save myself a lot of time and effort
Thank you so much for this video! I think I have REALLY intense S's. They're sharp like a knife and when I tried using these settings nothing actually changed. It's an unfortunate pattern of speech since I record meditations/hypnosis audios a lot for my clients. If you have any tips I'd be sooo grateful!!
Play with the settings, adjust the threshold, raise and lower the frequency range you’re targeting for reduction. Like I said, it’s a very customizable thing and will be different per voice. Email me a sample of what you’ve got. I’d gladly provide feedback!
Hi Joe, thank you for the links. They really work. Could you make a video on audio book mastering with Audacity, and also explain how to keep your energy going in long-duration reads? Thank you again for your very instructive videos
I lmao when i heard the "S" samples 😂. idk why. So... Shelly sells sharp seashells she purchased in San Francisco city with sixteen sisters on Saturdays and some Sundays. 😂😂😂
Hey man so I’m new but if I use a dbx 286s is that essentially compressing and dsessing and noise gate all in real time? Vs just recording raw audio into audacity and post mastering it?
You have it David. A dbx 286 definitely has the compressing and DeEssing and Gate capabilities all in real time. The downside of that is that you can never UNDO that action. You'll always have the altered audio, and never the raw. This would be a great application for a live stream for example, but if you're doing something like voiceover like me, the client usually wants the raw audio.
Thanks for the great tutorial. QUESTION: Do we want to keep the frequency range small? How do I go about knowing which range I should go for? I seem to have noticed that it removed a tad too much AND am trying to reduce the trial-and-error by identifying the proper frequency range, but do not know how to go about doing so.
Hey Angelo! I think it's best to highlight the particular offending 'ess' and use "plot spectrum" under "Analyze" to find the offending frequencies. If you do that, you'll see a particular bump on the range your 'ess' makes. This is the general frequency that you're trying to reduce the harshness of. Use these numbers to plug into the DeEsser and make the appropriate level of reduction. It will take a few runs to get it right, but don't give in!
Great. I've been using Spitfish De-esser in Audacity. But this one seems more customizable and easier to understand.
I was never able to actually use spit fish, but I’ve been happy with this one so far! Thanks for watching Vox!

I don`t see the link in the description anymore. Where is it?
It's still in there Lance. They change the position every now and then, but here's the forum link anyway: forum.audacityteam.org/viewtopic.php?p=245549#p245549
Holy sh%%%... you solve my day!!! thank you!!!
He%% yeah! Thank you!
Really useful - thank you so much. Now one on plosives please
Thank you Kathy! Tell me more! What would you like to know about plosives? Maybe I’ll cook something up for you 👨🍳
Thank you very much for the tip !
Thank you so much for the comment!
Thanks! This looks great. It seems to work wonderfully. Except now it's freezing. I tried to click the de-bug button but that's freezing too. Any ideas?
Hey Margo, It might be that the selection of audio is too large. How many minutes long is the chunk of audio you're trying to work with?
@@joeessayvoice Thanks so much for your quick reply! I'm actually doing just a couple words at a time to begin with.
Hey Joe, what was your final verdict on the free DeEsser? Did you decide that it was good enough or that you needed to move on to something else?
Hey Shawn,
For DeEssing, I found this tool to be all I need in my toolbox for now. It's been working great for a couple of years!
Exactly what I needed. Thank you, sir.
Yay! Robert, your comment was exactly what this comments section needed :D
Thank you for your help, it means alot.
You're welcome Audiobooks Play! Hope it's helping you produce like mad!
You are a God, thank you
👆You’re the man! 🤟
should be god, not God.
@@lytnin88 + Well spotted David! I have a feeling I know why.
Good sir, thank you so much for this. Much appreciated.

So who has been showing Silvia some strokes? Great video...nice find
Thank you! I appreciate the support!
ommmmmmmmmg thank you SO much!
Yoooooooooou are welcome 😁
This is amazing. Thank you so much! Do you happen to know how to apply the DeClicker.ny plug-in on the same forum?
Pretty much the same way! I also have a video for you on it! ua-cam.com/video/3zESSLTU4vw/v-deo.html. Good luck!
@@joeessayvoice Great! Thank you for sharing!
Hi Joe, thank you for the links. They really work. Could you make a video on audio book mastering with Audacity, and also explain how to keep your energy going in long-duration reads? Thank you again for your very instructive videos
Ooh, great concept. I’ll have to think about this one for a while!!! Glad you found things helpful! 👏
Thank you man. Saved my day!
Another audio saved! Thanks BaclibraMa!
Man, I wish I had your voice talent. Anyways, thank you for the tool! I was looking for something as effective as this =)
You're too nice BigSistahTips! I'm glad I could help!!
Thanks for the tool man! Super useful! btw you got a great voice!
You got it Chairman Michael! And thank you for the flattering comment! 😁
Thank you JOE EssAY
Heck yeah! Glad it works!
I lmao when i heard the "S" samples 😂. idk why. So... Shelly sells sharp seashells she purchased in San Francisco city with sixteen sisters on Saturdays and some Sundays. 😂😂😂
Ooooh that’s a good one Angeler!
@@joeessayvoice Thanks and Thanks for the video. Using the de-esser now.
This would be a great application for a live stream for example, but if you're doing something like voiceover like me, the client usually wants the raw audio.
thank you bro
You got it bro!! 🤙
You saved me from spending $10 every month! Thank you!
I'll kindly take any donations Praveen! :D
Glad it helped!
Thank you Joe . That was very helpful.
All for you! Glad you found it helpful! 😁
