    Just bought the oasis April 2024. I have the 11th gen paperwhite as well - but I wanted those physical buttons lol

    I use the audiobook feature of my Kindle paperwhite frequently when I am commuting to from work since it helps save the battery on my phone. I take public transportation so I like to be aware visually of what's going on around me, and so I'm not usually physically reading with my eyes at that time.
    I also like to have periods of the day where I turn my phone completely off and not look or be distracted at it, and if I want to listen to an audiobook, I'll connect my Bluetooth speakers to my Kindle instead.

      I probably should try turning my phone off completely more often. Now I'll have to try the feature!

    I bought a 2nd generation Oasis when it came out. It was great, but the battery life was never the best of the Kindle model. I bought the Paperwhite Signature and it is almost as good as the Oasis. Then I got the Scribe. The 10” screen is a wonder. I rarely take notes with it. Pricey, but the best Kindle out there.

    The cellular feature for the Oasis is another product option. My Oasis is a 32GB WiFi model. I got it when it was the only Kindle that had warm backlight option. It is unfortunate that Amazon hasn't been upgrading this premium priced product. The micro-USB with it is more finicky than the other micro-USB connectors I've had with other devices. But one thing I really like about the Oasis (and why I hope they might refresh it instead of killing it) is the ergonomic design. That ridge with the page turn buttons really makes it easier to hold and use in one hand than a standard/Paperweight Kindle. I realize it's harder to recommend it now because this is a premium and doesn't have all the latest features. As an Oasis owner, I'll just enjoy it and maybe consider updating if there is a refresh with wireless charging.

    I am not a college student and i dont write in my books. But i have a scribe and its great for people who are visually impaired. I have one eye and the eye i do have os starting to fail me. but the size of the screen means i can have huge text. I highly recommend it for people with visual impairments

    I think the oasis just doesn’t look as cute as the new paperwhite. That’s honestly the biggest reason I got the paperwhite instead. Also idk why someone would buy something in 2023 that doesn’t charge with usb-c

    • @hillareads
      @hillareads  Рік тому +5

      Oh, it's definitely not as cute! Every now and then I think about buying the green one even though my Oasis works fine. It's so wild that Amazon is STILL selling something that's not USB-C, so I hope they update it soon. 🥴

    Amazon have just announced there will be news of updates to kindles on Sept 20th 2023. Can't wait. Hope they update or renew the Oasis

    I have the 2018 Paperwhite and it also uses micro USB for charging. I've thought about upgrading to a different model, but the prices definitely make me hesitate.

      They're SO expensive, but worth it when you can get them on sale!

    I realized I needed a dedicated e-reader because ADD gets me sucked into other features of my phone/tablet way too easily. The browser experience on the Oasis is absolutely atrocious, so I’ll never get sidetracked into that. Also, I’m used to charging my devices daily, and sometimes several times a day. So despite Amazon’s battery claims, charging the Oasis every two or three days (I almost always use the lighting) is a total non-factor.

    Mine I bought used in 2019 and has been a constant use heavily for the last year--especially since I eventually managed to get Kindle Unlimited, about three months ago. The thing is super awesome to read, but the battery sucks ball. Lol. I'd love to get the Paperwhite, but I hate wasting money unnecessarily so I'll wait till this Oasis gets really bonker before I jump the gun.

    • @hillareads
      @hillareads  Рік тому

      It’s kind of the same for me. Maybe they’ll upgrade it, but it kind of seems like Amazon wants to focus on the Paperwhite, which is fine. It’s probably the one I’ll buy whenever my Oasis dies!

    With a trade-in Kindle (of which, I have many) I was able to get a refurb Oasis from Amazon for $113 after the 20% discount & $10 for a Voyage I don't use anymore.
    Don't know why everyone is so against micro-USB if all you do is have a cord connected to a charger. For lighter, larger screen, and more comfortable to hold, it's well worth the price.
    (And you know Amazon won't send out a shoddy Kindle refurb. Their reputation depends on it.)

      For me, it's just nice to have fewer chargers for everything. It's nice that so many devices rely on USB-C and it's frustrating (for me) when I only have one device that relies on one cable. I have the same issue with my iPhone, but luckily whenever I upgrade that, something that uses USB-C is the only option.

      Usb C is very fragile. My wife fell asleep with a tablet plugged in. It broke the connector on the board when it fell two feet. Repeated plugging and unplugging broke another. I hope to get something with wireless charging.

    Oasis is the best. Size is perfect. Forgot those bigger models. They aren't practical to read at all.

    I don’t see the reason for Bluetooth audio on kindles (since you can’t listen and read at the same time)…Unless they kept the text to speech…which they didn’t (the accessibility option for that aside). Everyone has smartphones, which is much better for audio books.
    Allot of people think that they may be updating the Oasis line soon…or replacing it.

    • @LeNguyen-cf5nw
      @LeNguyen-cf5nw Рік тому

      You can read and listen at the same time for kindle with the whispersync function. You basically sync both the audible and kindle book together. It's not that expensive if you buy both at the same time

    • @jayvansickle7607
      @jayvansickle7607 Рік тому

      @@LeNguyen-cf5nw ...the point is that you can hear the audio from the audio book And read along, like you can with android devices.

      Sometimes I'll check out an audiobook on Libby and read an ebook at the same time.
      I hope they update it soon! It's been so long, and wireless charging would be a nice added feature.

    I use an android-based 7inch e-reader (boox leaf 2). It's really nice to not be restricted to one ecosystem. But the kindle app is a bit lacking (not optimised for e-ink lol), and I agree that the whispersync feature is really nice and unfortunately unique.

    • @hillareads
      @hillareads  Рік тому

      Somehow I hadn't heard of the Boox before, but their products are so intriguing! The Kindle app is sooo finicky on some of the devices I've tried to use.

    • @LeNguyen-cf5nw
      @LeNguyen-cf5nw Рік тому

      @hillareads An android-based e-reader seems really flexible in comparison. However, I'm still dissapointed about the state of e-ink readers. If you compare our current devices with the first e-reader back 20 years ago, there are barely any improvements. Any updates and improvements are so slow and most e-reader try to lock you down to one ecosystem. It's really frustrating.
