I had no idea about Fluke Solve. I had body and Gill flukes, watched your video, bought the medicine after trying fluke-m and formalachite. What a difference, it's like having new fish. I sincerely thank you for posting this, I almost lost my koi!

gill flukes are quite often egg layers so you should re-treat 4 days after to kill the flukes that hatched , since it does not kill the eggs .

Well Terry it seems like a sad world when company's are selling products that just don't do what it says on the tin. I'm so pleased you have the problem under control and that you have given us great information and a genuine review of the products you tried. I not only decided to build your filter system but have also decided to replace everything else in the pond. I have a Aqua 22000 pump and an Evo 55 watt UV coming this week. So should be installing it all next week.
Thanks for all your help, all the best

I’ve read pages and pages of advice online, read every book I have and tried several treatments, similar to what you used. I salt bathed my koi and MB etc etc etc and no changes!

Hi Matt, I do recommend a scrape on your koi if you haven't done one, just to be sure what your treating. If you have flukes the Flukesolve will sort it. Don't forget to treat again in 3 weeks time in case they've laid eggs. No fluke treatment kills the eggs as you may know. Glad to help, and hope all goes well for you mate. Terry.

Harry Chung Hi Harry, Thanks m8, I thought I might lose one or two but they're all ok now m8 thanks. I must say that Fluke Solve is brilliant, very expensive but good. It works within 24 hours. And that's the good thing about Fluke Solve. It doesn't harm anything. Your filter bacteria are untouched, unlike formalachite. It doesn't harm your pond plants, and it does exactly what it says on the packet. but no, it doesn't touch the algae. Haven't noticed the water any clearer. Will re-dose in three weeks time as a precaution but all look good now.

The same problem, three doses of FMG and still most are lethargic with clamped pecs and some flashing. The young fish seem to be not having as much of a problem as the older, larger fish. I have sent off for Fluke-Solve, as you say, not cheap.

Formalin and malachite green definitely has its place in my opinion for certain parasites. Can't comment on the brand as I mix it myself as many are watered down. Great for white spot and costia but flukes seem totally unaffected. Think it may get the free swimming ones. It can however be used with praziquantel at the same time which would get the flukes too!

Wrighty yea I know what you mean, for some reason a few manufacturers seem to think it's a cure all which it most certainly isn't. Even for relatively sensitive parasites like chilodonella one dose isn't always enough. Fluke and trichodina I've found to be very resistant even at much higher than recommended doses!

Formalichite is used only at night time as day time sunlight will deactivate the treatment, turn off main filter for 4-6 hours at night during initial hours of treatment than it is safe to turn back on, repeat total of 5 time. Treatment is once every other day, This process is effective if done properly. If fish is still flashing test your water conditions.

I built you filter for my moms pond but did it with 3" abs flowing less than half of what your flowing so I am going to up the flow rate to 5000 GPH , she is in a windy and dusty area, used micro media in all tubs no UV as of yet. as the quartz broke, waiting on the replacement. but no green water and can see the bottom, just wish we could get the strainer you have. Here in the U.S.I can find short ones but not the nice long ones like you have. oh yea I like the new over flow strainer better will be a lot easier to make, only have a table saw and cutting that abs length wise is what took the longest.to make cutting cross will be a snap. Sorry to bother you Terry on a weekend! Question....Once I’ve treated the pond with Fluke Solve. How long do I have to wait to treat an alternative infection?
I read and noted that you said to treat again with Fluke Solve 2-3 weeks after initial dose but am I allowed/able to treat in between that period with a different treatment?
O and I’ve got a microscope now! Thanks you. Matt

Hi JF, That's right mate. I did read an article a while back when I had this problem, and it stated that flukes have become immune to formalachite, but its still good for costa, Ich and that sort of thing. What made me angry at the time is the fact that it still clearly states on the bottle, 'it cures flukes' when it doesn't, which nearly lost me some koi. Thanks mate, Terry.

  • @rtchow3000

check the pond ph factor. look for a cyst or white blister on the body, fish jumping upward, scraping against bottom pond objects. these signs will bring attention the need for drastic prevention action. don't overfeed and use more water plants for neutralizing the ph from the fish waste. you can't see the fish waste bi-produce, that can accumulate and cause imbalance ph in your pond water.i had 25 years of backyard ponds and filtration. there is a ph strip you can buy at a drug store/online; you can also resolve high ph on youtube videos. never relies too much on a chemical that will break down fish immunity. use natural means to resolve at all possible. i got a video on "DIY solar power for koi pond" part VII. can save $$ on electric bill.

Hi Michael, I don't think I'm too over stocked but I do have the filtration to cope. Coming out of winter your fish are on a bit of a low as you'll know and more susceptible to parasites. It's quite common to get parasites at this time of year. The video was just to let people know Formalachite doesn't work on flukes which it clearly states it does on the bottle. I spent £40 on it and completely wasted my money. Thanks for the post, Terry.

    • @Wrighty
      @Wrighty  4 роки тому

Hi mate, parasites are in all ponds, koi can live with them most of the time and the koi's immune system (slime coat) usually keep them in low numbers and we don't notice them, but they are there. It's when we have an outbreak which can be caused by the koi having some sort of shock or get stressed for some reason or there just a bit under the weather. That's when we have to step in with some sort of treatment or we loose the fish. Hope this helps mate. Terry.

    • @Wrighty

It sounds like you have introduced a koi into your pond with a problem. Have you tried pond salt? If it's only one or two koi you can salt bath them. If it's a lot you might have to treat the pond. Have a look at this video on adding pond salt to your pond. It does show them adding pond salt straight to the pond, I wouldn't do that. I would mix it in a bucket first and make sure it diluted. ua-cam.com/video/QcQ5zgz0OHM/v-deo.html
You should really have a pond water test kit and test your water at least once a week mate. Their not expensive. Terry.

+Wrighty no. it's not useful for flukes at all. for flukes, you have used the right product in the end. all my medicin comes from that company. luckily I rarely use it on my own pond. only had one parasite in 16 years. but a ton of my friends has problems. But they also dump a lot of crap in there ponds all the time :/

Hi Thomas, It is a bit early in the year to be buying koi as the ponds are still cold. Did they come from a pond or a koi supplier and from a tray. If so was the tray indoors. There probably not use to a pond so it will take them a while to settle down. Try not to spook them for a while to give them time to settle in. They should be ok. Just keep your eye on them. Terry.

Wrighty cheers for replying Terry small koi / General fish out let they where kept in black buckets inside but in like a gazebo attached to the side of the shop with no heating and not alot of sun light I would say it was just as cold inside as outside but I didn't check the water so it's possible it may have been heated. I definitely keep a eye on them from a far for the next week or so as not to spook them too much. Hi Sean, The fish should be ok, but I advise you to get a scrape on one of them first, so you know exactly what your treating. See if your local koi club or pond shop will do one for you if you don't have a microscope. Here's what it says on the packed of Fluke-solve:
Fluke Solve previously known as Solupraz provides effective control of skin and gill flukes as well as tapeworms in goldfish and Koi.
Fluke Solve is the result of in-depth research by veterinary fish experts who have recognised the need for ornamental fish keepers to have access to high quality veterinary pharmaceutical products, without prescription, which are both safe and effective.
The active ingredient in Fluke Solve is Praziquantel which has been used for the control of a variety of fish parasites since the early 1990's, with specific studies in carp for cestode (tapeworm) infestations as well as ectoparasites such as monogean trematodes, or flukes.
Fluke Solve does not damage filter bacteria or plant life and can be used at low temperatures down to 3 Degrees. Fluke Solve is also safe to use with sturgeon.
