I found your videos last week and I'm teaching myself to sew. I have learned SOOOOOOOOOOO much from your channel! Thank you for sharing your knowledge and giving detailed instructions on how you do things. I did a BEAUTIFUL invisible zipper, first zipper ever attempted, all thanks to your tutorial. :) New subbie for sure!
Your tutorials are fabulous. All of your instructions are clear and concise. I'm usually frustrated by online articles or videos that skip important details. Thanks for your help.
I took home ec in high school many years ago and by many years I mean the 1970s!! I wish they still taught home ec these days. Anyhow, these videos are great refreshers for my memory and also you have more innovative ideas and todays sewing implements have changed over the years a bit so I find these videos very helpful. Plus you're way more fun and cute than my teacher was. :) Thank you so much and please don't stop making these vids.
Just watched your cutting fabric video and very impressed. I am a trainee tailor and your video has really helped with detailing a really precise way to cur fabric. Very informative. I'll be watching the rest of your videos - looking forward to learning more!
BTW, a cutting mat is on my list of purchases. I really didn't understand the point of them but the more i see sewist use them i see they are useful, your hair looks great too!
Oh man, I love my cutting mat. My table is actually a big desk I got from IKEA that I used to use when I had a desktop computer. So, I measured it and ordered a custom cutting mat. I use my rotary cutter a lot so it's definitely great to have. If you don't use a rotary cutter, then it's really not that necessary. Thank you for the hair compliment!
I have just started teaching myself to sew a few days ago, and I had no idea the challenge and importance of cutting fabric. This is a very helpful video.
+leezah smiles I apologize, I thought I replied to you! Electric scissors are not for a beginner. They're actually used more for cutting multiple layers of fabric more precisely. Just practice with sharp fabric scissors and you'll get it. When I first started cutting fabric, it was horrible. With practice, I got it and you can, too!
Great video, i never knew to use a ruler to make sure the grain line was equal, not sure if i ever heard that before, great tip. I guess it wouldn't matter if it's a solid fabric, right? However, even then it's a good habit to form. So you prewash everything? Again, very good habit. Will you do a video on pattern & fabric storage/organization? Also, how you store/organize your notions & sewing tools? I love watching those type of videos too, always gives me great ideas. TFS!
Hey, Lady! Yes, this tip works on any pattern/solid fabric since your reference points will be the grainline on the pattern and a stationary edge. I've already filmed a Pattern Organization video and it will be posting in a couple of weeks! I can definitely plan on filming the rest of my storage soon for you! I love those videos, too. Yes, I pre-treat EVERYTHING. I used to wait and do it, but when the mood hits me to sew and my fabric hasn't been pre-washed, it's a mood killer. I used to sew without pre-washing and found my projects would almost always shrink on me, especially when sewing with knits. So, as soon as I buy it, I throw it in the washing machine or send it to the cleaners.
Thank you for the advice my table is pretty long but not as long as the pattern pieces because I alter some of the patteren from regular to maxi I'm going to start all over and put it on the floor like you suggested.
Do you have any advice for using a rotary cutter or should I stick to scissors? I bought a sewing machine months ago and stopped trying because I can't cut it accurately. I've read you should use some type of spray but I think you have to wash the fabric again after that.
This is your new bff! Lol this was very helpful also I'm trying to make a maxi cardigan from Mimi G tutorial I don't know what I'm doing wrong but my notches will not line up I put the fabric back on the patteren to make sure I had all the notches in place and sew it again and it still didn't match up. Tfs
Hi Michelle! I haven't done that tutorial from Mimi, yet, but I've definitely had that happen to me, especially on long pattern pieces like skirts. Here are some things to look at: How long is your sewing table? Will your entire pattern piece fit on your cutting surface? If not, I suggest you move it somewhere where you can lay it all out flat, even if that means the floor. (That's where I started with a big cardboard cutting mat!) Trying to cut fabric that's hanging off of a sewing table distrorts and stretches the fabric. So, when you cut it and it's stretched like that, your pieces will end up smaller and warped. Why do I know? Because I had to scrap $90 worth of wool because I did this. (!!!!!!!) So, I'm teaching what I can from my mistakes! What I do, is to smooth out my fabric as best as I can at fold the excess fabric at the end on top of itself like an accordion on the cutting table. That way, my fabric is even. Next, double, triple check that your selvedges match and your fabric is wrinkle free before slicing. It makes a huge difference when cutting then sewing. There have been times where I'm dealing with a large amount of fabric (4-5 yards) and it takes me forever to get that dang fabric smooth and lined up. But, as annoying as it is, I take the time to do it because I've had to trash a few projects trying to shortcut around this. I hope this helps!
I love love everything that you produce arm from the pattern is an all sold your room I love that and I really like how you talk to the many listeners that you have you make it plain OK where you can understand it I just started looking at the magazines maybe like a few weeks ago I am in my question would be where can we find these magazines I live in Cleveland Ohio and my first magazine I had got from me I don’t know from a sewing thing that I went to and I have them on to bluejeans outfits all throughout the magazine but I would like to get more of the magazine so if you can help me out that would be great Lee appreciated and may God continue to bless you more and more and more
HI! It looks like you commented on the wrong video, but if you go back to the magazine video, I linked to all of the magazine websites in the info box. Thanks for watching!
Surely if you use the edge of your table to check your cutting line and NOT the selvedge edge (which is known to be straight), your material could be wonky thus causing you to be cutting your material off line? I hope I'm making sense.
My problem is sometimes the selvages aren't always straight either. This last Ankara maxi skirt I made the selvages were really warped which then made my hem really cockeyed lol xx
foxxybrown291 that's why you need to iron the fabric before cutting it . iron both in sense of the warp and weft , but not at the same time , do it in one direction then turn the fabric 90 degrees and do the other direction . Do it slowly and do it well.
foxxybrown291 no problem , what fabric are you using ? If it's polyester you don't need to iron it ! But for silk, especially crepe , satin etc, you have to iron the fabric , i would almost recommend to lightly starch the fabric to make it a little more stiff , it will make it easier to cut and easier to sew, and when your garment or piece is over you can always dry clean it to remove the starch.
Why is your selvage not on the side but at the top I’ve been sewing for 65 years and I have never seen this before the selvage is not at the top and bottom of the fabric it’s on the side the grain line on the pattern that long line that runs up and down that pattern piece is to be placed on the grain not on the cross grain and why is the pattern placed in the center of the material
"Once you cut your fabric- you're screwed!" Has to be my favorite sewing tip! LOL
HAHAHA!

Style Sew Me didn't know you could get them custom cut, that's good to know.
I have just started teaching myself to sew a few days ago, and I had no idea the challenge and importance of cutting fabric. This is a very helpful video.
+mattachine Thank you, I'm glad it was helpful! Yes, cutting is very important and not as simple as it looks.
This video is extremely helpful, just started using patterns and needed some tips. Ty!!
I've just now started teaching myself to sew. I find this very helpful; I'll review it before I try putting it into practice!
Very well done. I learned a lot. Thank you!
This is exactly the video I needed--thanks so much for putting it together!
Very helpful and easy to follow, glad I found you. Thank you
I learned lots from this video. Thank you for making it.

Style Sew Me looking forward to the other videos. Ok, it sounds like a good habit to have measuring & washing fabric 👍👍thanks again

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! THIS HELPED ME SOOOO MUCH. I knew I cut my fabric wrong because when I sewed it. The fabric is not laying right.
Antoinette Reed brilliant
adorable video

I prefer the rotary cutter, now. I use scissors for weird shaped pieces with lost of nooks and crannies. Use what you feel comfortable with.
Thank you. :)
Subscribed and OMG! It was everything I wanted to know! Thank you!
Great Job!
This was SO helpful - thank you!!!!
You're so welcome!
Nice job, thank you.

Thank You !
Should beginners use electric scissors? Do the electric scissors ensure a more even cutting line?
Thanks.

Great video, new subscriber :)
thank you so much!
GreAt teacher!
+shoenotes Thank you!
Is there anything special I would need to do if I use a serger to sew my clothing together?
I personally don't do this because it's very hard to make fitting adjustments having to pick out serger threads.
What scissors are you using?
Ginghers

Makes sense. I do line up my selvedges along a straight edge like my table as a double check. I don't recall having issues with wonky fabric.
Oh ok. Thank you for your response.
My problem is sometimes the selvages aren't always straight either. This last Ankara maxi skirt I made the selvages were really warped which then made my hem really cockeyed lol xx
foxxybrown291 Wow! I've never seen warped selvedges. How'd you fix it?
foxxybrown291 that's why you need to iron the fabric before cutting it . iron both in sense of the warp and weft , but not at the same time , do it in one direction then turn the fabric 90 degrees and do the other direction . Do it slowly and do it well.
Style Sew Me Your tutorial is fantastic, it is really good to watch a real pro working .
olfursson kyllian Thank you so much, I will give it ago xx
foxxybrown291 no problem , what fabric are you using ?

Excellent tips. I would recommend a different title. Perhaps. Cut your your sewing project the correct way.

This video is only about cutting.
