Brooks death always gets to me. The feelings of an old man, useless, broken, and wasting space in a world thats left him behind. All he wants is peace, a place to be wanted, and to feed his bird. How anyone can keep a straight face is beyond me, im already balling my eyes out.
I'm heading into Brooks-land now. It is bittersweet. Sweet to remember the good times. Bitter to realize that the world you grew up in, lived in, people and family you knew, only exist in your memories...
There's a subtle bit in that montage, no one looks at or address him unless they're berating him. Look on the bus, everyones heads are turned away. He's invisible, ignored. He doesn't matter in this new world.
I felt choked up and almost cried. He reminded me of my grandfather, always behind current technology but he was kind and friendly. Whenever I visited him he gave me chocolate. He didn't feed birds but liked his cats in a genuine way. Gonna miss him so much.
The sad reality is that old people are often overlooked, but (barring a tragedy) we'll all end up there - which is almost a tragedy in itself. Yes you've made it to old age but everything is so different it's not the life you necessarily want.

I've seen this movie literally dozens of times and never noticed that Andy wore Brooks's sweater after he died until you pointed that out. Great observation! Really enjoyed this reaction and you almost had me in tears too.
I'm so glad it showed the extra final scene in the film. In the book, the story ended with Red on the bus, heading for the Mexican border. The emotional catharsis felt when Andy runs to hug Red at the ocean's edge is SO needed.
My favorite bit is how during the film Red speaks about how hope is a dangerous thing. He says it can drive a man insane. But the last lines of the film, spoken by Red, are "I hope to see my friend and shake his hand. I hope the Pacific is as blue as it has been in my dreams. I hope." I adore that and I'm a damn pessimist.
The subtitle (or section title, if you will) of the novella in the Stephen King published Different Seasons was "Hope Springs Eternal" as each of the four stores represented a different season. This story was about hope, and was the Spring story, and was about someone "springing' himself from prison (that was my take, anyway).
See, she needs a movie chain. I'm 34, I grew up on late 70s and 80s metal and hard rock. Spinal Tap isn't that funny if you Edit: if you don't know about the excess and selfish behavior
I always remember "Get busy living or get busy dying" whenever I feel like giving up. Andy didn't give up. He had a plan all along, even if nobody knew it. Also if you like Stephen King's non-horror stories adapted as films, watch Stand By Me. That one was brilliant too.

Also, I just finished the reaction, and I gotta say, you have just given my favorite reaction to my favorite movie (well, it's tied with Princess Bride for me). That was pure emotion that you put out for us to see and it was wonderful to see. Thank you.
I've seen this movie countless times and I had also never noticed Andy wearing Brooks's cardigan until Ashleigh pointed it out. I love discovering new things in my favorite movies!
Andy and Brooks look like they are wearing the same cardigan because they were both prison issue sweaters. It wasn't the exact cardigan that Brooks wore.
Okay everyone, hear me out. Recently Ashleigh bought a new house. Since then the house has flooded, the windows won't close and Beans lives on the roof. I really think this is a sign that Ashleigh should watch 'The Money Pit' starring Tom Hanks as soon as possible. What do you think?
This movie has always moved me deeply and especially the Brooks part. But now whenever I see it I will always remember the heartfelt tears and empathy of Ashleigh for Brooks. The sincerity and emotion of when you said "but now he'll never know if Jake came to see him" was so beautiful and heartbreaking to watch Ashleigh. I always found your laughter and sense of humour so endearing, but your heartfelt compassion is truly something to treasure.

The only reasons to see this movie is to see Burt Reynolds in his prime and Dueling Banjos. The rest of it, which was provocative at the time, has been done hundreds of times since.
This is easily one of the greatest movies ever made. It still amazes me that it was a commercial flop when it was first released in theaters, because it is such an amazing movie (directly competing with Pulp Fiction more or less killed it). That said, it's had a lasting impact, and became an instant classic once it reached cable and home video. It'll always be one of my favorites.

Fun fact: the original ending was just Redd on the bus. Test audiences HATED the ending, so they went back and shot the scene on the beach of Andy and Redd reuniting.
Yeah, but I still think it would be better without the final scene. The film is about hope and Red is on the bus and his final words are "I hope", and we are all supposed to be left HOPING he finds Andy.
@@hedgehog1965uk I feel like hope in the larger sense is the point. Even if Red was disappointed in the specific things he hopes for at the end, he HOPES again. So no matter what, it's a happy ending.
I’ve debated this with other people before. I’ve read the book-which had the more ambiguous ending-and I just love the ending to the film. I don’t believe I’ve ever seen another movie with a more powerful emotional payoff, and a lot of it has to do with the way it spends almost the entire story showing the decades of physical and psychological abuse the main characters go through in the prison, and then it’s all followed by a cathartic release in which everything comes together. I’m not saying the book’s ending was flawed-it worked for the purposes of the book (especially because the book takes a more skeptical approach to the events-Andy becomes something of a figure of myth in the prison and it isn’t clear how much the stories about him are accurate). The movie, with its more straightforward and visceral telling of the story, it needed the emotional punch of that final moment in which we know Red has completed his journey.
@@Kylopod I agree. Plus seeing everything work out... gives everyone watching... the gift of hope in their own lives. Makes the movie powerful. Best movie I’ve ever watched. It’s a gift.
Usually, I'm not a fan of having the happy ending spelled out at the end of a movie but I do think this is one that definitely earns the full pay off at the end, given the amount of fairly unremitting shit that the characters go through during the course of it.
King's novella (collection of short stories) Different Seasons, has the story "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption ". It is an INCREDIBLE read. Only about 90 pages, at the heart it's a story about friendship, told from Red's perspective. Of course being king you have to have horror - the abuse he goes through covers that and more in the book, the movie barely touches on it. I remember crying, laughing till I cried, red hot anger, and leaping to my feet and shouting, "Yes!" having turned the pages of this masterpiece. It's the only book I took to my father and said "You must read this!" I'm saying the same to you out there.... "You got yo READ this!"

I find it odd that so many of SK’s books have been made into movies, and were not that great. They were okay, but not great. Then comes along Shawshank, Stand By Me, and The Green Mile. And Delores Claiborne is another I think should be up there. I realize that there are a lot of fans of IT, so I’ll add that. But it wasn’t one of my favorites.
I found your channel a few weeks ago and I've been catching up. I have a story: In high school, we had a class bus trip down to Sydney (takes about 2 hours to drive) for the day and halfway there the teacher put this movie on the TV at the front of the bus for us to watch. Clearly we didn't finish it before we got to our destination but you better believe we demanded to continue it for our trip home. We made it back to school late that afternoon but the movie hadn't finished yet. The bus had pulled up and opened it's doors ready for us to leave but none of us moved from our seats. We all wanted to watch and see how it ended. I can only imagine what the parents picking us up thought, expecting all of us to come out....then nothing. HAHA. We sat there for a good 20 minutes I think, maybe more.
This is a great re-warch movie. Knowing what Andy is doing behind the scenes adds so much to several scenes, especially when the warden visits his cell and holds the bible.
Ashleigh: "Infirmary? Doesn't that mean fire, no that's inferno. Infirmary that's hospital, okay WHOA it took me a second to get there, didn't it. I took the scenic route." LOL!!
See, that's the Awkward flavoring we all come here for. YT keeps recommending other "first time watching" reaction videos, and all of their commentary seems to just be variations on bland "Oh wow" or "that's a cool shot" inanity. Ashleigh says out loud the kind of nonsense I think we all have in our heads from time to time, when we need a second to catch up to what we're seeing.
It was so beautiful at the end when they meet and hug on the beach. Makes me cry every time. My favorite movie of all time. I’m glad younger folks are discovering it. It almost won the Oscar but Forrest Gump was the same year. That’s an awesome movie too.
We have a cycle lift at work which drops down 1 floor to the basement. It's boarded up inside to protect the finish whilst the contractors use it for getting themselves and materials into the building for a fit out. Someone wrote 'Brooks was ere' and someone replied 'Brooks is a cunt'.
Imagine Morgan Freeman saying this: "Last time I saw Ashleigh Burton, she was crying her ass off about Brooks. Little did she know that I made other movies where she would have a rollercoaster of emotions. Movies like Seven, Glory, Unforgiven. Hell, even that little Maine writer, King of Stephens, had two other adaptations with the same right feel as Shawshank Redemption, that being The Green Mile, by the same director of Shawshank, and Stand By Me. I hope she watches those movies. I hope."
This is a movie literally everyone likes. It's a tough watch at times, but the last 20 minutes or so is so cathartic that you end up feeling so good at the end. Just a great story masterfully told.

Watching you get emotional makes me emotional. You are so vested in the characters of the film. You know all their names. I sometimes forget names through the story and just think of the characters as "that guy" and "that woman." However, you are the Filmmaker's audience.
"Is this movie gonna make me cry?" Oh, my sweet summer child.
You make me wonder whether she's seen GOT. It would be cool if she started doing some classic TV series. Breaking Bad, GOT, Firefly, Stranger Things, Band of Brothers, etc etc.
Love your reactions if you liked this performance by Tim Robbins (Andy) I'm sure you'd like Mystic River Directed by Clint Eastwood?

That technically makes Red the antagonist from a thematic standpoint, if you think about it.
Red finally gained parole when he finally gave up hope and simply told the truth to the board.

In high school, we had a class bus trip down to Sydney (takes about 2 hours to drive) for the day and halfway there the teacher put this movie on the TV at the front of the bus for us to watch.

You need to watch "The Green Mile" with Tom Hanks. It's definitely a tear jerker. It's definitely right up their with "The Shawshank redemption" It made me cry.
you gotta be straight dead inside not to drop a tear watching the green mile.
Same sort of thing with Heaven Sent, the Dr Who movie when you hear Capaldi say it isn't the day someone dies that is a problem, you've got something to do that day, it is all the days they stay dead.
“Is this movie gonna make me cry?” If you didn’t id be worried.
