The film I put on our west facing transom windows blocks TONS of heat. We're in Louisiana just outside of New Orleans where it gets "melt you slowly" heat and humidity gets to "boil you from the inside out" heat. We put it on two windows and stopped for dinner. Upon returning you could feel the difference between the covered and uncovered windows. It truly lessened our electric bill as we had those windows above a solarium that ran the back of the house (about 10 feet deep) leading to a glass wall as the west wall to the great room and the master bedroom. That's our next project.

I've used the reflective window film and the opaque window film from Amazon. They are great for blocking sunlight, etc. The opaque frosted one gives us privacy in the bathroom, blocks some of the heat, and still lets it be light in the room. The reflective one we use on our west facing window during the summer, and it makes a huge difference in the amount of heat we have in our living room.

When I lived in Vegas, many homes have black or tan heat/sun screens that mount to the outside of the window. It’s like an extra window screen outside of the normal window screen. Let’s light in but blocks the intense heat. That might be a good option for all the west facing windows. And depending on how you construct decking to “connect” the two structures in the future, a higher pergola roofing slats that mount just above those smaller transom windows would be pretty and functional.
    Good luck!

The best way to have winter grass growing for them is to have your acreage divided. My grandfather planted his winter grass but did not run the animals on it till it was grown up quite a bit. Then he would transfer them into that field. He’d also plant clover. And believe he even planted alfalfa. He had a lot of acreage and could rotate his cattle and few horses around. He always had beautiful hay fields and would bale and store his own hay for the winter also.

We've used shade sails or sun shades 40% or higher with grommets to shade our barn an garden by using eye bolts, rope or carabiners, and(2) 10 to 12 foot fence poles. Attach one side to the house conversion, and the other to poles. If you get 40 or 50% sun shade, you can use it later over a garden.
You can also use the heavy duty sun shade (silver one ) the kind you get for car or truck windshield (the thicker one) Cut it into pieces, and place each piece on the inside of those little windows. Many RVer's use this silver sun shade in small rv windows.

@adler farms I ❤ those windows & have thought about this very issue... tried a couple different solutions for this as I LOVE the natural light & didn't want to lose that light either. So you can buy tinted vinyl... goes on with soapy water after cleaning your windows with vinegar & water (50/50). Tip: Use newspaper to wipe any window (sounds crazy & wear gloves - hands get black but windows don't smear or streak). So not all vinyl is equal... 3mil is thickness good for protecting shatter for security & disaster if I recall (double chk tho). You can remove film over winter to GET sun as well. You can also get vinyl film with various designs in frost or crystal like qualities. I liked one but wanted to see out subtly if I wanted to, so used an art razor knife to precisely & gently cut certain parts of the design out. Nobody noticed unless looking closely. Another option is painting frost on clean windows (spray can). Easy, simple, clean look. Did that with an entry door upper fan style window... but if you still want some view, well u could leave an inch or so around it. One more possibility though not sure it be good for you guys - buy one of the sun shades, but you need things to attach it to. If so inclined (don't tell Casey!), is if it work. You could install 3 4×4 posts or logs from downed trees ... use those to secure sun shade, ANNNDD as shade over a hammock!!! Love double duty! .... or you could do that last idea 💡 regardless. Who doesn't enjoy a chilled afternoon resting this or that in a shaded hammock. You can remove it n put away when not in use so Bruce doesn't think its a snack or his siesta spot. ;)
Ok.... & the end of the video with film arrived as I was almost done. I'm leaving it in. Cheers & happy days. :)

I agree with this idea to clean windows with newspapers and something like Windex. Only use the "black and white" printed pages as opposed to comic sections or anything with colored advertising. It is messy for your hands, but vinyl gloves can solve that. I know it sounds crazy, but I promise you will be happy with the results.

They make a reflective window tint that keeps the heat out but you still can see out. I would put it on all the windows in addition to the blinds, if it were me. That way it will cool down the cabin but don't lose the view. Good luck. It is already 102+ here in Texas as well plus the unbearable humidity. edit: just as I was typing this i got to the part of the video showing you already got the tint lol

They have window clings that are a silver look on the outside, but you can see through them on the inside. That should help to Blick the sun.

Chad, My brother tinted his windows in his FL home. He said it cut the heat tremendously. Also to help with the flies, pick up some fly traps that you install in the areas the cattle graze. They have helped my families farm.

Yes. Blackout curtains on rods, you'll keep them closed during summer but in winter the light and extra warmth will be nice.

I don’t comment much, but we raised cattle here in rural Southern California. Pick a bred that matches your environment.
They only farms that have Highlands here, are at least 4,500’ elevation with much cooler temps. Your cow and calf are in pond because they need to cool off.
God bless your family and farm. ❤😊🙏

I think a great retractable awning. Shade for sitting outside, shades the house and can retract for windy weather.
